C300: Alternatives to the c300mk3?

On the general Sony thread, a gentleman posted the latest results of A7SIII with an external Raw recorder. To me, the footage of ProRes 444 looks very good and, with A7SIII and FX-6 sharing the same sensor, the price range for the two is way under FX-9.

I'd check out the video for further considerations. The thread is called "RAW power".

that's a good example for different taste :)
For my taste the video looks way oversaturated and too dark

I don’t want to start another Canon vs Sony debate, but why do you guys and gals think the C300 mkiii is not selling well, if that is the case?

Simply a matter of so much competition? Maybe the price has it in no-man’s land between the FX9 and ARRI / RED cameras?

Because as usual Canon falls short on features compared to Sony and the youngsters are completely enamored of the iCamera Black Magic units. I remember when the C500 was released, it was a $25K camera that still needed another $5K in recorder to enable raw recording. At that time, the Scarlet was about $20K total from what I remember. The C500 didn't sell well either. Not sure why Canon can't design cameras that are comparable in terms of features. It's a mystery.

I think you cannot compare the early C500 with the C300iii
The C500 was way too expensive compared to other cameras
and had a much smaller target group.

My guess is that Canon suffers from the overpricing and crippling of the former years . That helped Sony to establish the FS7.
I can tell that from a personal perspective. C300II only 4K30p and C200 only RAW both was a not an option for me
so I ended at the FS7 and struggled 3yrs with Sony colors.
But 4K60p for almost half the price of a C300ii has broadened the user base dramatically.
Once your producer request a FS7 you are lost with a C300ii. That was exactly what was happening.
If I hadn't ditched the FS7 for the beautiful colors of the EVA1 I probably would be on a FX6 now too.
Sony has improved a lot in colors and no Sony user will probably switch to the C300iii. That's why they are not
selling as good. It's not the question of the price. If difference of 5K of your day-in day-out tool matters in 3 yrs
your doing sth wrong.

The C300iii sold well in the beginning but since the FX6 came out half a year later I can imagine it doesn't anymore.
Plus in pandemic times the investment in gear when down.

Plus, the mounts - the outgoing EF and a now-and-forever E.

However, Canon will try to fire back with their 8K lineup.

I wasn't comparing, just using C500 as an example of how Canon doesn't include features that other cameras have. And for years I was more than ready to sell off my Red and get a C300, but it never made sense until now, although I still don't understand why Canon can't give us full raster 12 bit color even just at 2K.

The Sony FX9 has be selling more better as of the past few months. I think that has more to do with the FX6 cameras not being available and FX6 buyers waiting for cameras giving up and buying the FX9.

Until recently the Canon C300 Mark III out sold the FX9 by a wide margin. Lately, we've been moving a lot more FX9 cameras than in previous months. Most of these purchases have been on the 48m 0% lease promo. Canon is now offering a 0% 48m lease promo on the Canon C500 Mark II. The C300 Mark II has 0% 24m & 1.99% 36m lease promos.

I don't see have B&H can have the FX6 on their best seller list when this camera is simply not available.

The Canon C70 is still selling at a very high rate.

Sony FX3 sales have steadily increased in recent weeks.

Ya, the EF-to-RF transition isn't perfectly timed. But I'd guess any time they made that transition, it'd be a pain. However, historically Canon sticks with lens mounts for a long time.

FD Mount: 1970-1989

EF Mount: 1987-2021ish

RF Mount 2018-- ???

Yes, that list missed a couple arguably minor points. But the EF-to-RF adapters seem to work well (as people here have helpfully pointed out). So I think RF will be around for a while.

That all said, I've done a couple days with a Venice and a couple others with an FX9 (not operating; doing sound). And plenty with FS7, etc. The FX-series cameras are pretty nice. I'm happy to have options.

Terry, a question about the Canon 0% 25m lease/finance deal: Does that 0% apply to just camera bodies, or does it apply to say, a body+lens+batts bought at the same time?

Thanks,

Jim

Canon allows you to bundle any Canon branded item including the Canon R5, RF lenses, or Canon batteries on 0% or 1.99% leases sponsored by the Cinema EOS division.

We had Canon C70 customer who bundled another 30k worth of non-promo R5 camera bodies and RF lenses on a 0% lease a few months ago.

Sony's promo rates are offered only on the item with the promo rate. Nothing else.

You're right but it's still a variable. Canon stopped production of the EF lens lineup and the new RF appear to have a better AF, a more silent AF motor, etc. Then, there's a transition to 8K, which has some people looking over their shoulders.

Then there's Covid.

PS. The transition seemed to hit Nikon even harder.

Hello there! I don't know if you solved this problem already, but I recently shot on the C500 MkII and that had an amazing image! The Arri Amira also is great and is meant for a solo doc style shooter. Good luck on your shoot!
