AG-DVX200 4K Large-Sensor Handheld Camcorder

After this entire thread and time period, is there any use for pre-release reviews? Since they are still gluing the camera together up until the truck loadout, the negative, misinformed reviews can not be helping. Waiting for the actual released camera to be delivered then reviewing for others to make judgments on just makes more sense to me. Carry on...

How can people say this. This is "1" thread. A forum was created for the AF100 that got to more than 15 pages of threads (some over 100 pages of post's) before that camera came out!

Edit: I don't think there should be reviews, but saying we shouldn't speculate and the like, is wrong IMO

Would the USB port have enough juice to power an external recorder? If Atomos or BMD released something like an updated 4k Ninja Star that recorded to SD cards that could be powered this way, it would be freakin' sweet.

These things really suck the juice out of a camera battery i think.
When you plug the External HDD into the HC-X1000 without the camera plugged into a power point, one of the first thing that comes up is a message telling you not to do it on the battery, you can if you want to risk it though. The DVX200 uses the same battery as the X1000 i think.
I'm sure advances will come along (just like with Laptop and Phone battery's), but It's most likely that no matter what (even if the battery on the camera lasted for 20 hours), you will be cutting your power length by more than half (unless the device has its own), or that's what the go is with an External HDD anyway.

There has not much been mentioned about stills from this camera. What's the quality like? In some instances, I have been able to extract rather good looking images from my GH4 and they have printed well too to 8 x 10s. I am wondering if the delineation between a photographer camera and this unit will be blurred even more.

Tests on GX8 showed more res than on GH4 - a higher pixel count in play.

One thing not mentioned as a con in the News Shooter review was the crop factor in 4k 60p. So you lose the ability to shoot wide and take a hit on low light performance in this mode? Haven't seen any comments about this. Is it a non issue for most?

Cropping is not a bonus; however, it's hard to classify it as a con when it's pretty much the only camera out there offering UHD/60p at all. Most other cameras max out at UHD/30p. So yes, it crops in to 37.2mm FOV when going to UHD/60p, nobody's happy about it, but there's nothing that can be done about it either.

How do you take a hit on low light performance? You'd actually potentially get better low light performance because for any given framing, you'd have the lens zoomed out wider for UHD/60p, which means you could use a more-open iris. I don't understand why you think it would impact low light performance? Unless you're talking about the slowest possible shutter speed being 1/60, but ... then again, that's endemic and inseparable from shooting 60p, so it's hard to see that as a con.

Just got an email invite to the Panasonic DVX-200 launch event in LA on October 1st. Does this mean that the camera will be available on the 1st?

"Panasonic invites you to join us for an afternoon of hands-on demonstrations and presentations on the new AG-DVX200PJ, the next generation of large sensor, multi-format professional camcorders capable of capturing 4K/UHD, HD and SD, including cinematic DCI 4K 4096x2160. Offering a suite of top-end features, including 4K/24p and 1080/60p recording as well as a V-Log L gamma curve, the DVX200PJ is ready to excel in documentary, reality television, event production and as a second-unit camera in 4K filmmaking.

This Los Angeles launch event runs from 2PM to 8PM, with special presentations at 3PM and 6PM."

Speakers: Barry Green and Doug Farris

Needless to say I won't be crossing the country to go to this event, but it is encouraging!

Wide angle has been mentioned before a few times. Not sure there is a low light hit compared to any other shooting rate though.

Daniel,

Be wary of appyling LUTs to LOG footage in Premiere 2015. There seems to be a bug & some footage may show artifacts that wouldn't appear when processed in other software.

Adobe is aware of the concerns & hopefully working on a fix.

is this the cause of what we have seen in facial tones? The NLE and not the camera? I hope so. Does anyone remember clips edited in Resolve that showed normal skin tones?

Another nice feature of the DVX 200 is that you can assign the CAPTURE function to a user button to take still pictures. The size of still picture captured depends on the record mode setting. The great thing about this feature is that you can take stills images even while the camera is recording video. The maximum still picture size you can capture is 8.8MP (4096×2160) in a 17:9 aspect ratio. The only limit to the number of stills images you can capture is the size of your recording media.

I am very excited about this...How big are the prints that you can make from this?.

Changed text back to white so we can read it.

Does anyone know if the 200 has time/day stamp for legal and surveillance applications?

Yes it does. There are a couple of limitations (such as, it doesn't work when recording standard-def) but there are also plenty of workarounds (such as, you can record HD, and downconvert to SD for recording on an external DVD recorder, and it will time-stamp the footage on the external output). So, the answer is basically, yes, it does.

that would be nice to know, however also implies that every single uploaded video was processed that way. EVERY ONE. that cant be, right? surely not everyone worldwide who posted footage is using premiere and shooting/processing the same way?
