AG-DVX200 4K Large-Sensor Handheld Camcorder

Anyone know the answer to this? Regarding 4K-->HD and 8-bit, 10-bit, 4:2:2, 4:4:4, etc.

Does this apply to throwing UHD footage into a 1920x1080 timeline? Or exporting a UHD timeline/project and compressing it to 1920x1080? Or both?

Again, for the people who have been hands on with it already, how does the peaking function work in practical terms? (it's called focus assist in this case?). I'm used to sony style peaking of coloured edges, but I'm sure I saw an image somewhere of the peaking on this represented by squares overlaid at different sizes, or am I imagining that. Just wondering if that was the case, are the squares distracting in any way?

That's up to your software. You can experiment with it now, just using HD footage. Shrink a 1920x1080 4:2:0 image down to 960x540; the results when viewed uncompressed should be 4:4:4.

The focus assist can be one of three ways.

1) LCD peaking -- this is normal white peaking, you can turn it on and have it always on the LCD, and you can adjust the levels of peaking. This is not called a "focus assist", but it is a separate function.

2. Colored peaking -- this is what you're talking about, red or blue or yellow highlights around in-focus objects. You can have this by itself, or in combination with the magnification.

3. Magnified focus assist -- this is stellar. This brings up a box in the middle of the screen that greatly magnifies the central portion of the frame, showing you exactly what it looks like. You can then further zoom in, or zoom out, and you can move the box around the screen to magnify different areas of the frame at whatever magnification level you want.

Colored peaking and magnified focus assist can be combined so you can see the magnified image with colored peaking on it.

It works superbly.

Agree -- it's really great -- BUT, if it functions the same as with the HC-X1000, it's disabled once you start recording. Color peaking is still there, but doesn't work so well in low contrast scenes.

Yes it does. Using the "area" function, you can touch the screen to tell it where to focus, or expose, or focus & expose.

Great now if it only had a wider zoom in QFHD 60P. Must check what my NX5 or AX1 looks like at 37mm equivalent. Not quite sure how to do that with so different lenses !!! I assume that the touch focus is active when recording as the real value of it is to touch to check focus when reframing while recording.

Barry, is the lens Par-Focal. I shoot a lot of sporting events that require a lot of zooming in and out. I like to set focus manually and prefer not to rely on Auto Focus.

Whether it is internally or not I can't say, but it seems to act like it is. I zoomed in 100% on something, critically focused on it, and then went into magnified focus and blew it up as big as I could so I could see every pixel on it. I then zoomed in and out throughout the entire zoom range, and it stayed in sharp focus the whole time. The lens also reported the focus distance as not changing at any point. Again, this is not a production line model, so I can't say that absolutely everything in this camera will be exactly this same way in the production camera, but it seems like this is one thing that definitely should be.

Again, you want to see how filmlike the DVX200 will probably look? Watch GH4 footage with Vlog. I accept any bet that the DVX200 will look at least as good as this footage:

yes. I was looking at the DVX200 as an ENG cam but I am beginning to think that with V Log it will be great for microbudget features, even with internal recording. With 10 bit 4:2:2 external it may even produce footage worthy of handing off to color correction houses for upper end microbudget features.

BTW look at the focus pulls in this film. Nice shallow DOF.

Barry, does the touch focus work while shooting so we can do a focus pull by touching the new focus area while shooting? This would be fabulous for those of us who are not pro focus pullers. If so can we control the speed of the focus shift? Also, I assume that the face detection will maintain focus as the subject moves. Is this correct Barry?

In this case a GH4 will be superior. The footage was filmed with a f/0.95 Voigtländer lens. But looking at it I felt very pleased with the DR - which is something Vimeo and YouTube can't quit with their compression.

I just meant every time someone posts a new clip, 10 other people ***** about it for 5 pages.
Totally understood!
