AG-DVX200 4K Large-Sensor Handheld Camcorder

i was a little bit disappointed at first, because i expected something like an af200 - but the more i think of it, the more i realise, that about 90% of my paid work, i work with the pana 12-35 and 14-140 on my af100 anyway. and i was always missing powerzoom, the "leica" look, and parfocal lens from my dvx100. so, maybe, this is a smart choice for a lot of us run and gunners nonetheless. i can always get a cheap gh4 as b-cam, if i want interchangeable lenses.

stoked for the first reviews.

In the video linked below the Panasonic representative clearly says at 58 sec that it will do "AVC Ultra at 4:4:4". Please if any1 over at NAB can confirm this. All I heard elsewhere is that it will be same as GH4.

It was a mistake. If they had AVC Ultra, they would be trumpeting it in the literature. AVC-Ultra 4:4:4 requires the new class of P2 cards as well, it's not physically possible to do with SDXC cards.

at around 3:45, they go into codecs and bitrates... similar to the GH4.

what we're watching is, in fact, complete evidence of just HOW a RUMOR begins. If I see any of you people advancing these rumors of AVC-U 444 and new 422 codecs, and then later bagging on rumor sites, I will pompously fart in your general direction.

LOL.. My bad.. yeah.. it turns from "Maybe Panasonic are..." to "This guy over at DVX user says Panasonic are...." Nobody is advancing a rumor... it was speculation.. like "Maybe they are, maybe they aren't?"

What would be the preferred color?
I was on an NDA on this for a while...this is the one they showed us and our reaction is that it should be blue...Panasonic blue and if not then black. I was surprised when we got to the both and saw it was still red...it's not firm that it will stay that way...pricing info: they said it would be under $5000....and shipping in the fall.

Not to dwell on it, but..Seeing more of it, the weird speckled pattern is to my eyes worse than the red. Looks gaudy/cheap...like an athletic shoe.

Jim any details that are not on this thread? Sensor pixel pitch, sensitivity, DR? Codecs? Throw us something to obsess about until real footage comes out.

JIm, forgot to ask if they told you how the HD singlal was derived? Is is a downsampling that will decrease noise? Our non profit needs three of something like this we hope this is.

No, I've got nothing to let you obsess about......what they showed was the same mock up we saw in our NDA meeting....

4/3 is half of full frame 35mm, but it also slightly depends on how much active area of the sensor is being used for the actual FOV, being half the size of FF gives you a nice chunk more DOF to play with, which some folks don't like, but its still significantly larger than s16, and you can get a shallow DOF if you want, but a deep DOF if necessary. it's a notch below cropped, 1.6x sensors as well(c100 included), which is why the speedbooster is so liked for shrinking those lenses down to m43 and gaining the stop in speed

actually micro 4/3rds is about 1/4 the size of FF 35mm not half the size.Sensor-Size-Comparison-Full-Frame-APS-C-Micro-Four-Thirds-1-Inch.jpg

"Unfortunately, the only companies that seem to understand our industry anymore are Blackmagic and Sony. Why the hell would anyone other than a rental house buy a C300MKII for $15K when we have the FS7, Ursa and Ursa Mini for less than half the cost. Red and Arri of course do their own thing so their products will always be out of reach but I cannot fathom how the C300MKII can cost more than $10K, let alone $15K. Canon is trying to bridge the gap between Blackmagic and Red but in the process, they don't really appeal to anyone. Sure, I would rent a Mk2 in a heartbeat but I would never think of buying one when the Ursa Mini has the same specs for 1/3 the cost. No wonder they released the camera a few days before the show. It would have seemed like the punchline to a terrible joke after the Blackmagic press conference."

This post is so flawed with bad generalizations...you might actually........oh, nevermind.

There is no possible way, on this earth or any other, that the DVX200 will be recording AVC-Ultra at 4:4:4. That requires not only P2 cards, but the newest "Express P2" cards. The DVX200 records on standard commodity SDXC cards.

Whoever made any quote about AVC-Ultra got it wrong. Must have confused it with the VariCam. The VariCam will have AVC-Ultra at 4:4:4, the DVX200 will definitely not.

Another video... Wish we could see some footage soon.
There will not be footage for months. We've been down this road -- the DVX100 followed almost the identical same development cycle, introduced at NAB in April, hit the store shelves in October. This DVX200 is following the same cycle, and based on that cycle, you will not see footage until probably July/August at the EARLIEST.

I acknowledge that folks want to see footage. But I'm telling you it is a physical impossibility. The first partly-working prototype won't be out of the labs until June or July. That's how the development cycle goes. As I said before, you can't get a baby in one month by throwing nine women at the problem! :)

That's exactly how I felt when I first heard about it. Initially disappointed, but then, the more I thought about it, the more I thought that -- hey, they may not be giving a lot of us what we've been begging for, but they may actually instead be giving us exactly what we need. Not for everyone, obviously, but yeah, I have to say, the more I think about it, the more I think this could end up being better than I was expecting.

By "the weird speckled pattern", I assume you're talking about like on the lens hood? It's either carbon fiber, or made to look exactly like it. It looks interesting in person. I don't know that you can really tell what it actually looks like on youtube vids.

They did not say. However, on the HC-X1000, that's exactly how they do it, and the 1080p from that camera is superb. It is full resolution, with a high-quality downsample of the entire 4K scan, and does result in significantly averaging out and minimizing the noise. I have no reason to believe that the DVX200 will be any different, but they didn't say for sure.
