AG-DVX200 4K Large-Sensor Handheld Camcorder

I really like the way the DVX200 looks, red and all.

I just want to know if it will perform better in low light than a GH4 with a 35-100 f/2.8 lens. If so, I'm very interested.

I think it could be about 1/2 a stop brighter on the wide end, wild guess due to the slightly larger (25%) pixels on the sensor compared to the GH4. The GH4 packs extra pixels on the sensor for shooting stills that are virtually useless for 4k video shooters. I was confused about the lens last night and now once again understand it to be f2.8-f4.5. If the sensor (is) about 1/2 stop more sensitive the long end of the lens could be a bit darker since it is 1 1/2 stops slower.

Still one needs to factor in this is more like the 14-140 lens which opens up a whole new world of shooting virtually not possible on the GH4 starting at f2.8. I would bet without a doubt the DVX200 will be more sensitive than a GH4 with the 14-140 lens to cover a wide range of shooting focal lengths without stopping the camera and swapping lenses. I use the 14-140 lens a lot for run and gun shooting and it is a very under rated lens. The DVX200 will very likely be much more sensitive and it is a power zoom which is even better. I would cry like a baby if somebody made a full electronic 14-192mm f2.8-f4.5 zoom lens with power zoom and 5 axis stabilization for the GH4. If the lens can keep the aperture at f4.0 around 140mm even better.

With the flood of info surrounding the newly-announced cameras at NAB, I read something I can't seem to find now. I could be confused as to which camera(s), but I know I read somewhere that at least one had both rolling shutter and global shutter in one. Is that true?

so how does the DOF on this sensor size compare to full frame/C100 sensor cams? i.e at equivalent field of view, distance to subject, stop, how does DOF compare to full frame or C100 sized sensors? Many mention run n gun/ENG shooting with cams like this so it must not be as shallow as Im thinking?

That would be the BMD Ursa Mini 4.6K: "The sensor features global shutter up to 30 frames per second and rolling shutter up to 60 frames per second with 15 stops of dynamic range." No indication from them on how much of a hit the global shutter will be on the dynamic range, but I haven't read and seen everything out there.

To keep my post on topic, I like the fixed lens on the DVX200 too, as those tend to be more versatile than a single interchangeable zoom lens can be, so great for run and gun doc work. I was initially pretty disappointed with the figures they chose for the lens though, and wished they had somehow pulled a 24-240 f/2.8 constant or something close to it (wider, shorter 10x zoom, but brighter and preferably constant), but I'm starting to warm up a little bit more to the lens.

Yeah, right now I'm using the GH4 with the 14-140, so I know the DVX200 would positively kill that combo in low light. It would also be far more usable for event video that a GH4 and still camera lenses. But I shoot a lot of stuff in dark environments (theater shows, weddings, etc.) which is why I need it to be good in low light. I was almost set on buying the 35-100 f/2.8 lens, which is fantastic, but I could certainly use an all-around event cam like the DVX200 and not mess around with swapping lenses or jerky zooming action.

I suppose it depends on what it ends up costing. If it's $4995, it might be too much for me. But if it ends up costing around $3500 (like the original DVX100 did) then I might just spring for it. I'm just going to have to wait and see.

Such a lens would be incredible. I would buy it in a heartbeat, even if it cost $2000.

Latest B&H email blast from NAB lists everything BUT this camera... Oh well, maybe because there wasn't a working model on the floor?
Yeah, I noticed that, too. Don't know why, but it made me feel a bit angry at them. Nostalgia for the DVX100, I guess! :)

I'm starting to warm up to the idea of the DVX200. Need to see reviews and play with it in person, but it may just fit the bill for certain types of events I shoot.

Still, it'll be hard to go back to big, heavy, expensive cameras when I've been using GH4 and GH3 cameras these past couple of years! I do miss that servo zoom action, though...

In the video linked below the Panasonic representative clearly says at 58 sec that it will do "AVC Ultra at 4:4:4". Please if any1 over at NAB can confirm this. All I heard elsewhere is that it will be same as GH4.

There's always the A7s with the handy 18-200 power zoom lens. Been using it for almost 9 months now and it's killer. Worthy servo zoom replacement. I like the DVX200 though on many levels. It just might be hard to go back to another camera now that I see how good a camera "can" be in low light with my A7s. I returned my GH4 the week after I got an A7s. DVX200 just reminds me of how much I miss the days of not having to rig-up these smaller cameras.

There's a lot of people yearning for the AVC Ultra codec on the DVX200. Have you all edited that codec? I've found it to be a huge pain to deal with even on a really suped up PC or MAC when you are doing any sort of multicam (especially 3+ cams). Running the latest Premiere CC. I end up transcoding everything to get around it which kinda stinks. This was my experience working with PX270 for a month or two before we picked up the GH4 and then eventually moved on to the A7s.

I hear ya.. we do both photo and video so having a dedicated video only camera has it's drawbacks as there as well.. Still, every time I shoot with the little Sony AX100 I'm reminded how freakin EASY it is to get great looking footage with the proper tools.. Sure a full frame DSLR or a GH4 can get outstanding footage but it IS more work. We've just gotten used to it.
Hey, this site is CALLED "DVX-User" shouldn't we all be excited for more info and footage from our new baby?

Yep.. hey, maybe Panasonic is releasing a codec to compete with the newer Sony AVC-S 10 bit 422 offering? That'd be sweet...

what we're watching is, in fact, complete evidence of just HOW a RUMOR begins. If I see any of you people advancing these rumors of AVC-U 444 and new 422 codecs, and then later bagging on rumor sites, I will pompously fart in your general direction.
