AF200 Soon?

In a world where a Hyperdeck shuttle/120GB SSD package is ~$500, can someone explain to me how a P2 card slot in a new camera is a good idea?
backwards compatibility for previous p2 owners. I myself woudnt mind having an ssd cam myself but p2 card arent so bad.

anyway here are some of my predictions and a bit more realisitc coming in NAB
-a p2 version of AF100 (i would call HPF200 with same as hpx250 features)
-128gb P2 card
-usb3 p2 card reader
anything less would be disappointing

My sources tell me there will be a new AFxxx at NAB, P2 based. My sources also tell me that there will NOT be an S35 sensor camera from Panasonic this year. Expect NAB to be about AVC-Ultra for Panasonic, but not sure what camera/s it will be in, and what version of Ultra, ie; 4:4:4, 3D, 4K, etc. If there is no S35 sensor at any price point from Panasonic and/or the new AFxxx doesn't have a new sensor, 10-bit architecture and more powerful DSP, I don't envision buying our next large sensor camera from Panasonic. We have a Canon C300 PL on order, although want to wait for NAB announcements and delivery times. Things are moving fast!
yes everything is moving really fast! i just had my af100 a year ago! pretty exciting times
now logically i dont know how the sensor will be but im pretty sure if a p2 version is coming out itll be 10 bit with all the HPX250 features inside it... and that means (like you reviewed before) better overexposure roll off!

I've noticed the AF 100 forum consistantly has more current viewers in DVX user than any other video camera. The dslr section usually has over 3 times the amount of the AF 100 section.

I bet Jan knows. She has been relatively quiet lately though. The af100 is an excellent camera, although many claim the fs100 is "so much sharper" yet lacks so many features. I agree with the comment that NAB will be all about AVC ULTRA. Could panny possibly use the same 4/3 style sensor and produce a 2k camera with AVC ULTRA? That would be awesome.

I predict Panasonic might implement a new medium like P3. Compared to P2 it'd be smaller and faster. It would still be a professional medium that would controlable and guarenteed to work with all P3 and P2 (via adapter) products.

I've been using the p2 format for almost 3 years and its been bullet proof. i think p2 is very reliable and very pricey...
I've been on P2's for about 5 years now .. they've been reliable .. my point was (IMHO) SSD drives have been
as reliable (albeit we haven't been using them as long). They're certainly far less expensive, have higher capacity,
and much faster I/O. The laptop market has driven the price point down and reliability up.

We've had a few media failures on the P2... but it's been rare.

I did have a 16 gig R-Series P2 go bad once. The last 3 times it was used the last half of the card wouldn't import for some reason although the clips could still playback in camera. The only way to get the clips off the card was to capture the card straight from the camera like it was a tape.

Going P2 at this point seems a little kooky with the trend in offboard SSD solutions and the falling prices on SSDs (except for the folks that own a bunch of P2 cards of course). I think proprietary solid state media is probably a retograde move. How about clean hdsdi 4:2:2 out and a built in HD bay (Panasonic makes laptops so I'm sure they have the technology).

I can care less if they would come up with new media or new body. Imoh their ultimate goal would be come up with panasonic log and less aggrsive color profile, cleaner image.

For Every camera they've put out to the market there were tons of noise complains that would resulted with remedies provided dvx members. For me always comprise for panasonic cameras. Have still hvx200, hpx250 sold two af100 after 5 months.

Any feature that have mentioned here would take price tag to 10K-12k (jan wrote this) at this price range sony f3rgb is not brainer for those who is serious in this business. The price would be interesting if it is less than 10k. Otherwise F3rgb got already everybodies sympathy. The war cant be won there.

It is about how clean organic the image is out of box, how much freedom you are giving to users at the post.

No camera for grown ups will ever use off-the-shelf SSDs. SATA ports are the flimsiest thing ever invented by anyone ever. Makes mini HDMI look like lemo. You'd get to use each SSD you bought about three times.

That's absurd.

No it's not.

Video is and always will be a secondary function to a camera designed primarily for asking still photos.

Moire, aliasing, line skipping, short record times, and anemic codecs are just some of the limitations that dslrs exhibit and one of the many reasons Panasonic, Sony and others have come out with large sensor cameras built for the task of recording video.

+1.

Yesterday I attended a workshop with Philip Bloom.

He rolled thru most of the DSLRs and all I heard was how compromised they are for shooting video.

The lengths he goes to for some shots with DSLRs is just incredible.

eg.
Setting a vibrating timer so that he knows in an interview when to turn the camera on and off to avoid over heating and clip spanning issues
Random moire issues that can only be seen in an NLE and not in camera monitoring.
Jello issues.
Audio monitoring - impossible
Cameras without headphone jacks
Lack of waveform monitoring
Lenses without apertures
.....

As I listened....I was real glad I had an AF102 ...and in fact ..that I was not an INDIE!

(I was surrounded by indies who have no issue accepting these limitations but my guess is..they dont know that there is a better way)

FWIW - PB does not rate the AF100 much these days it seems. (lack of res and dynamic range)

He is firmly in the Sony and Canon camp. (and he has his valid reasons).

...but also kind of interesting when he is in an indie workshop and promoting $20,000+ camcorders with Zeiss ZFs alongside DSLRS with a heap of compromises.

He is also the first to say...there is no perfect camera anywhere. ( And I agree with him)

I said t so many times: P2 media is great, but not in price. Panasonic is the only manufacturer of the media, so they can charge you what ever they want. SSD is great too and a lot of companies are producing it - it is a lot cheaper an holds a lot more data. Those guys who bought the expensive cards are the best P2-promoters for Pana. You have to justify to yourself why you pay so much isn't it?

I have used P2 (and owned multiple cards), yet after going to SSDs, I will never go back to P2. SSDs are much faster than P2, and are much less expensive. Sure, P2 cards are bullet proof (I saw one get run over, and when it was popped into a reader it was fine, and the person actually still uses the card as a backup), but it is not like SSDs are super fragile or anything, and for the price, performance, and availability, SSDs really seem like the way forward to me. It is not like using P2 over SSDs will give better quality footage, it will just be more limiting.

Actually, if there is an upgrade, and the only realy improvement is making it P2, I would actually have been happier if their was no upgrade. All I want is more dynamic range, better highlight handeling, a little better resolution, and 10-bit HD-SDI out at around the AF100s price point.

good point. DR and resolution should also be considered. (although i think 10 bit 4:2:2 may help a bit in DR)
I knw panasonic listens i just hope they do it right because the bottomline is the final image
