They both look promising as alternatives to DSLR's.

Lets talk about the differences between the two cameras and debate on which one will end up being more useful ;)

Obviously price is probably the biggest difference between the two.

OMG no. Not another thread like this -- Wait until February when the head to head to head to head tests can be done (including everything from All the Reds, the Alexas, the 5D, the 7D, GH13, GH2, Af100, and the F3 and why not an F35 for giggles). Until then this topic has been theoretically been talked to death here.

I understand the interest but for me personally I just can't wait to get my AF100 and start shooting.

When I do I simply want to make my films and will frequent this forum to learn how to get the moat out of my camera.

I guess I'm saying I'm already sold and never looking back.

I've been using the Panasonic HMC-150 for some time now so the AF100 really excites me as its essentially the same camera with a different sensor.

There is no comparison. Two totally different markets.

I dread these types of threads. In case you hadn't noticed, these threads recently have ALWAYS devolved into pointless bickering.

I hope this thread gets closed. No offense to you Jon. It's just that these types of threads don't accomplish much (as evidenced by the many threads like this that had to be closed).

See IMO, Sony tends to price ALL of their products 3x more than the competition. ;) I started this thread not to install pointless bickering, but rather to discuss how the cameras are different and praise their new features and what they can add to the art. Cameras are tools nothing more- its how you use them that matters most.

I think it's been discussed in several prior threads (which have been closed) already.

I personally think panny is going to hit this one out of the park, like they did with the DVX.

It's like comparing skill saw and a power drill. Admin- please close this topic.

Price aside I liked AF101 more than F3 due to how it's put together and button layout. I also like the fact that you use inexpensive media vs Sonys media. Image quality one can only take a guess since neither camera is on the market yet.

You can buy almost three AF100 cameras for the price of one F3. No contest.

Which means we can get a head start on 4D videos!

In seriousness though, I too pre-ordered an AF100. The F3 is out of my price range so it's not even a thought. What's more important to me also is availability and given I will have my AF100 in about a month I imagine. Now the newer camera Sony announced that had NXCAM on the side sounds interesting, but while people are bickering over it while it doesn't exist, I will be out shooting enjoying my AF100 :)

the nxcam one sounds like they just put it together after hearing about the af100.

but if it has the same f3 sensor and priced appropriately, id take a bite

In the spirit of the holidays, i'll throw ya a bone and say that the difference will be in the details.

to the average user watching your product, the difference will be pretty much impossible to tell, they will both deliver very beautiful images but the af100 will do it at a fraction of the price.

The benefit of the F3 will be the slight increase of sensitivity of the imager, the ever so slightly half of a stop of depth of field lost, and the better codec for heavier grading and post production FX.

Cheers.

oh, really? Find me one other camera with 4:4:4 dual link capability, even s-log if you can find any. Oh, wait, the next camera up the price chain that's capable of such things would be an Alexa, or RED. Maybe you just meant 3x less. Yeah, I'll go with that.

These threads are so useless, what did you honestly intend with starting another one?

The AF100 is $4,700 and the F3 is $13,000. Anyone can compare the two with their own research... plus if you have over $10K+ to spend on a camera body you're not looking at the AF100 anyways - so why compare?

I think you should close this thread too. Plus everyone knows the F3 is better.
