AF100 LCD screen

On my AF, I can white balance in my kitchen which has CF lighting which is definitely green biased. If I look at the HDSDI out of the camera on a monitor which is properly set up the image looks correct indicating a WB that has compensated for the extra green in the light. If I look at the LCD on the other hand, it still has a +green bias so to me that says the LCD is slightly green, I know that, don't lose sleep and go about my business.

I finally had a chance to look at our 2nd AF100 and the LCD display is +green, same as our 1st AF100. Flesh tones look yellow.

This issue is mostly about "confidence" in your gear on the shoot day.

I use a studio monitor for reference 99.8% of the time... so wouldn't be to worried about a bit of green in the onboard. (I would prefer it to be perfect though)

A run and gun shooter may need a little more confidence because of the absence of a calibrated reference monitor. He ends up with a big act of faith and knows nothing till he gets to the edit. room.

BTW: I have a 1700 series Panasonic Monitor that has always had a slight green feel... but... it is easily corrected because it has the controls on it to do so. We regularly check our color setups in a manner similar to what Barry G described in a post or few above this one.

Well, all of my color worries just went out the window. While trying to prove a point about the color differences I shot a bunch of footage trying to make the HVX and AF100 look the same. First clip I looked at in FCP had the AWB on daylight on both cameras and they are nearly identical. Spot on. The footage follows suit until I start playing with the settings.

I'll probably post some footage later this weekend in that HVX/AF100 comparison thread....but I'm no longer the least bit concerned about the colors on the AF100. I'll just have to recalibrate my monitor :embarasse

That's great Jim. I'm sorry if i implied in my thread that the recorded image had strange colors, cause that isn't the case. The recorded image always gave me very accurate colors, it was just the LCD.

No, not at all. My monitor matched my LCD, so I thought the camera might be green. You opened the can, but I dumped out the worms

No, just use an external monitor, and the EVF for color accuracy. Use the LCD as reference.

I'm updating and changing my opinion slightly. I always thought and even said there should be a color balance control for the LCD, but before I said my LCD looked fine, especially the color bars. I guess when you don't have a properly calibrated display sitting next to the camera it can be hard to tell. I set up my new TV Logic 5.6" LCD, which is properly calibrated, and there's a drastic difference between that and the AF100 LCD. This is under 3200K and 5600K white balance, and even the color bars look different. White seems white on both, but the yellow on the AF100 LCD has a green hue to it and the other colors are off slightly. I do notice that with fluorescent lighting the AF100 LCD green push is much more exaggerated than under daylight or tungsten lighting. Panasonic should at least pull back the green on the LCD, or better would be to give us color balance settings for the LCD.

Again, it's a BIG difference between the two like Papa showed in his pictures earlier in this thread.

Mike,

I agree with you completely. I just received my TV Logic 5.6" and it's colorimetry is so much more accurate and not cartoonish, and of course doesn't have the green push. I was watching footage from a shoot I did last week and one of the talent had a very orange/rust colored shirt when looking with my eye, ditto the TV Logic LVM-071W I used on-board for the shoot, and watching playback with the TV Logic WFM-056WP. The LCD on the camera made the shirt look red, which is odd, since a green push should make it less towards magenta, but there seems to be a red push as well. As you said, the yellow bar on color bars is completely different. The TV Logic is doing a much better color encoding job, very subtle shades of color are apparent.

I will say the AF100 LCD is still impressing me with its resolution and off-axis display, it's pretty amazing for a camera LCD, certainly as good or better than the EX1 in those regards.

A right off the wall suggestion for someone that may have the PMS COlor app in their iPhone and whom is also experiencing the green issue.

Take a look at your monitors BARS with the PMS Color app and see how it color matches up.

I dont have that app (because I dont have an iPhone) but my model maker uses it all the time. eg to match up or identify small areas of an image on a pack or object.

It s kind of impressive and may just serve a function in this matter.

i find it mildly amusing that most panasonic fans rave about panasonic's cinematic color curves, and meanwhile it seems they have a history of color issues with their on camera monitors

Shooter, can you confirm this "green push" issue on your own camera - as compared to a calibrated monitor?

Or are you not seeing this issue at all?

I am not seeing this issue at all.

We took a concentrated look at it when we first got the camera ( AF102 and were doing our base tests). We compared it to the Panny 1700 HD monitor.

We all agreed that the issue was not evident.

(We means 3x D.Ps)

Interesting.

Perhaps those afflicted with this problem may best seek recourse through their dealer and/or Panasonic.
It does seem possible that some early units may have had some QC problems.

I believe this may be the issue.

Everyone else who is reporting seeing the green bias is not comparing to another panasonic monitor. Perhaps panasonic monitors have this green push. There is a consistent concern about the green on the monitor, i've seen enough comments and compared mine with one in store to know that this is a general issue, which is even addressed by the manual. Thus, all we can hope for is a firmware upgrade that allows for color balance on the LCD.

I dont think this is the issue in my case. We recognised the green issue in my 1700 monitor from the time we got it. We have phase adjusted it out and ascertained it is fine. SO.. we are now checking the AF100 LCD against a monitor we trust.

Adding: Wonder if there is a difference between PAL models and the models using NTSC .. . it would figure.

Can I ask - to those with this green cast issue

1/ If you use 3200K tungsten lights like an Arri fresnel / or a professional grade fluorescent lamp such as a kino @ 3200K do you see it?
2/ Does there happen to be consumer fluorescent light around when you see it? Say shop lighting or any consumer fluoro lamp in your house?
