AF100 / AF101 - initial report

Filippo -

Congratulations on the shoot. I have a couple of questions, if you are allowed to answer them.

1) You said that you used the Nanoflash. What record settings did you use with that device - 100mb/s?

2) Can you post 100% (1920x1080) ungraded footage or stills from the shoot?

Thanks!

You might want to post some unprocessed video for the DVX forum here, because after seeing that footage some of us are a little worried... should I have pre-ordered that camera?

Worried because you think it's no good and you want to cancel your order?
Or worried because you think it's great and you didn't pre order?

Anyone basing a buying decision solely off of footage on the internet from an UNFINISHED camera is nuts.

I pre-ordered because I know that Panasonic is going to hit it out of the park and because they listen to the end user.

Hi Michael,

thanks!
I used the Nanoflash at 100mb/s.
I'll post ungraded new footage soon!

Ciao,

Filippo

Don't you think basing such decision solely on the belief it's gonna be great is even more nuts than basing it on web footage?

It's not rocket science. If a dslr can look really good with crappy codecs and all the moire/aliasing, then this camera with the specs it has is GOING to be better. It's got better codec recording, fixes the moire/aliasing issues, has a 4:2:2 output, nd filter, gamma curves, multiple frame rates... Need I go on?

If you consider a 7D or GH1 good video recorders, the AF-100 is gonna blow em both away.

I completely agree... but many won't.

how many are "many" that won't? many more than the satisfied Panasonic customers along past years? Many more than the people that needs a true professional HD video camera with a bunch of options and affordable price?

I'm a happy and content 7D user, and I would be crazy to deny that this camera will be better in quality than my 7D in video mode. Why? Because this is a video camera with a DSLR sized sensor. It's all I've ever wanted, to get rid of the 35mm adapter set-up, and why I got the 7D in the first place.

(I'm not bummed about having a "lame duck" camera, though, because I now have an awesome B camera and 18 MP still camera for posters and behind the scene photos!)

Now, the 4/3 sensor does bother me a little -- I wish it was larger. The sensor is noticeably smaller than my 7D... But not enough for me not to still see this product's advantages.

But then, I also try really hard not to be a fanboy of any company or product. :)

First things first. The image quality is amazing, but i must point out the most apparent thing and hopefully everyone else sees this as well. The panny af100 is properly exposed in every clip but the canon 5d is over exposed except for the last clip. however the panny did certainly have a more filmic tone to it but hard to say if it's due to the fact they did not properly expose my baby (canon 5d) Lol. Very impressive though.

Wow. That looks great! Is this nanoflash or AVCHD? Have you looked at both types of encoded footage side by side? Comments?

Hi Steve,

thanks!
I used the Nanoflash!
I have looked at both types of the encoded footage, the Nanoflash one is much more better (280Mbps), but the Panny one works very well!

Hi reem12,

thanks!
In my opinion, the 5D footage is not over exposed except when the car goes away!

Would be really nice to see this camera from the avchd footage. Not all of us are goingto cash out on these external recorders.

well the shadows are pretty black and yet the highlights are over exposed on the 5d mk II. --edit no wait im wrong those are properly exposed and it just looks so video-y

wow looks awesome for ungraded
