AF100 / AF101 - initial report

Hey Filippo,

Are both the 5d and the AF shot on straight out of the box settings, so the 5d on standard picture profile and the AF's scene files untouched?
Have you had a chance to play around with the Dynamic Range Stretcher yet?
Panny: I changed only the pedestal settings and I used the Cine Like V gamma
Canon: Standard

The Canon Standard is considered very contrasty and is not indicative of the dynamic range of the 5D as everyone recommend to dial the contrast down completely or some do use custom curves for maximum dynamic range. We will have to wait to have a better comparison between the two

I know Daniel, I know!
There was no grading, so we used the Standard profile to achive contrast and colors!

Dear Filippo, don' t take it at a bad critique, it was just a thought and I am grateful for what you have already shown us. many thanks sharing this footage on the board for all of us to see some of the first af100 footage. I don' t want to sound like some people here that feel that you own them something and complaining if they don' t get a perfect test. Some will complain about not seeing charts, others not beautiful footage as if the person was a paid (like journalist from their magazine) reviewer.

It also shouldn't be so that if someone posts pre-production footage of a camera, we have to treat them like gods and think twice before asking questions and making comments. Some of them react so oversensitive, maybe making it better for them not to publish anything at all. It seems some of them are seeking nothing but praise rather than discussion.

also keep in mind daniel you're saying Canon was not on ideal settings but the AF100 is not even complete and had settings missing so it evens out the unfairness advantage in the face off and AF100 still clearly is better than the 5d

Don't worry Daniel it's oK, I'm not a touchy man:happy:!
English is not my mother tongue, I wasn't angry!
All comments are welcome!
I'm not a paied reviewer (maybe in the future... I'm joking!):-Happy(DBG):, I love to share with other persons my personal experiences.

Cheers,

Filippo

The AF100 clearly has a niche for me that it will fit quite nicely into. Once the hub bub settles down a bit after the Christmas stampede, I'll probably snag a couple and pick up some PL mounts so I can use some of my existing glass.

i know you shoot a lot on Red so i'm curious which niche it will fit for you?

Any final word on whether the shipping camera will allow dialing in of the color temp for precise white balance? And also whether expanded focus will work while recording?

Looks good so far and much in sync with Barry's report.

Seems that $5K is needed to get rid of moire.

So far my gripes:

- of course 5K
- a bit bulky

Had an opportunity to use the HVX200 and the AF100 over the weekend. The AF100 is probably half the weight of the HVX. I also put the AF100 with lens next to my HMC40. It was about the same length(!) The HMC40 is a tiny camera, the AF100 was taller and a little wider but it wasn't any longer. It's not huge. I should find a 5D with 18-135 lens and do a size comparison between the two. It's not as big as you'd think.

Thanks. Also a size comparison to the Sony VG10 would be interesting.

We are mainly photographers and want to have the video camera with us in the same (small bags). Here size Matters.
