AF100 / AF101 - initial report

Yes, yes. Perfect explanation. So good in fact, that I was understanding by the middle of the third sentence. So, 1:1 mode, no good. Thanks for taking the time.

Yep, basically because it diffuses the high spacial frequencies it would look as explained. (although most OLPF designs I've seen lately duplicate the image in multiple directions at very small offsets relative to effective pixel pitch using birefringent material, which is very cool I might add).

Someone had asked in a different forum why companies don't use some sort of switchable OLPF, but given it works at the pixel level, I figured the engineering to keep the OLPF exactly in place, and it's proximity to the sensor, make that VERY expensive. Too tight of tolerances.

Ultimately what needs to happen in a future design is that the full resolution of the sensor would need to be readable and downsampled post debayer in camera to 1080p (or offered as a larger size I imagine like RED does), THEN cropping would be possible since we'd already be at the native pixel density resolution always.

HOWEVER, as Barry has stated, we don't know for sure that the AF100 is using a standard bayer pattern either. Given they NEVER run the pixels at full resolution 1:1, it's possible they could have changed the dye pattern in the filter to benefit 1080p as well.

My question will be how does 720p look. Are they taking the 1080p image and downsampling it? I will look forward to comparing the two. :)

Not wanting to bump the thread or anything but my last post passed apparently unnoticed and got run over by an ongoing discussion...

Does anyone know anything about pre-ordering of the AF101 European version of this camera? I really would like to pre-order so I could wait as little as possible to get my cameras in December.

I'm also looking for pre-ordering options here in UK, but nothing proper yet, just some price annoucements , the most expensive version of the camcorder in the world, as usual:(

True... Europe is in such a crisis and it baffles me how everything is always so much more expensive over here... It seems like they are really trying to bury us in bankrupcy...:(

Is it really true that devices with >30mins record time get a 5% tax added on (or 5% higher I guess technically) in the UK?

Does anyone know if the Merlin stabilizer would work on the af100? What affordable alternatives? (Merlin costs 700 € in davprocom)

Why is this camera more expensive in Europe????
I live in the poorest country in Europe....Everything is more expensive here than in other countries: food, electronics,etc...
Americans are the richest and they get all the stuff cheaper???? What's the deal with this?

I think I saw that the weight was 3 pounds without lens? So I guess one part of the equation is what lens you will be using.

I use a Blackbird stabilizer from CMR (actually, we have three of them) and we love them. We plan on flying the AF100 on them as well.

They say cameras 1 to 8 pounds.

Don't know for sure, but probably will. I think the Merlin can support up to about 7 pounds, and the AF100 weighs something like 3 pounds.

No, it uses the AVCCAM batteries, the ones that work with the HMC150/HMC40.

I'm a little confused. So, don't the Hpx170 and the HMC150 use the same batteries?
I thought that was the same as the HVX batteries.
I noticed in some of the videos of the AF100 the battery shown mounted to the camera is a bigger battery like the HVX uses. Or is there two sizes of batteries that work? I've seen the tiny square batteries also but here:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/598759-REG/Series_7_SES7PHPXK_Battery_and_Power.html

This charger kit is for HPX170 AND HMC 150's and looks like large batteries.

The HPX170 and HMC150 do not use the same batteries.

Yes you can get large batteries for the AVCCAM cameras. They come with the small square one, but bigger ones are available too.

What mceedigital says is correct. I perfectly understand you because also I live in one of Europe's least rich countries and also here things are more expensive and taxes are higher than even in most other EEC countries.

This is of course not Panasonic's fault but, in the end the result is always the increase of the gap between rich and poor people and countries. The worse the country's economy is, the more they want to charge the already enpovered population, to pay for the crisis. This includes paying for higher priced AG-AF101s...

But hey... This is off-topic here and I apologize for continuing with the subject. I just can't wait for the camera to be available for pre-order, that's all.

Thanx very much! didn´t know about that, and if you say it works well, seems to be a good alternative! I don´t expect to be using extra heavy lenses, a 14-140 weights about 1 lb, ain´t? I´m pretty new in this forum and i´d like to thank you guys very very much for sharing your knowledge, i´m learning so much! Thankx indeed! I´ve been working with a dvx100be until now and i´m planning to get a gh1 (hackable if possible) and afterwards probably an af100. That´s why i was thinking of getting a stabilizer that would work for both.

Feeling a little guilty to continue such subject, it must be said, though, that, like mceedigital said, it is a government policy - it's said that if the trade balance gets too negative Brazil (my country) would crash. So the government overtaxes products to prevent us to give our money to foreign enterprises, keeping it here, estimulating our economy and national enterpreneurs. How much in this account is due to inefficiency of the administration, is hard to know. We have here in Brazil the most expensive apple products of the world... a 4-5k camera, like AF100, will cost here around 8k... I wouldn't know if the poorest european country is as poor as the wealthiest south american country!

You're in a wealthy country, meu amigo!
At risk of getting seriously OT here-

According to IMF 2008 data, the five poorest countries in Europe (GDP per capita, nominal) would be (my guess was Albania):

Moldova - 1.809 USD
Georgia - 2.925 USD
Ukraine - 3.290 USD
Armenia - 3.361 USD
Albania - 4.074 USD

Brazil is the largest national economy in Latin America, the world's eighth largest economy at market exchange rates and the ninth largest in purchasing power parity (PPP), according to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Its current GDP (PPP) per capita is $10,200, putting Brazil in the 64th position according to World Bank data.

So let's all chip in and send an AF100 to Moldova!

Hi everyone, I'm new in the forum!

I tested the Panasonic AG-AF 100 2 weeks ago in Italy for one day and one night (I’m lucky ^_^).
Actually there is only one of those cameras in the world. It’s a pre-release model so is impossible to have an accurate review (menu was partially locked, the sensor was not the definitive one and no recording, I used my great Nanoflash via SDI camera output).
The model that was in my hands, was terrific, I’m falling in love with this baby!
No aliasing and no moirè and a very negligible rolling shutter effect.
The new Pany will costs about € 5900 in Italy tax included (body only).
On November I will be in Osaka at Panasonic, so I will try the definitive release of the AG-AF100. :-)
