AF100 / AF101 - initial report

But, be aware that there is no given standard for noise level at base ISO, so -- you can't really directly compare them. If one manufacturer's tolerance for noise is higher than another's, then they might "rate" their camera faster, even though your particular tastes may be for less noise, so you may "prefer" the "slower" camera.

And, then again, there's the simple fact that not every manufacturer considers brightness equally. Look at the GH1 vs. 7D ISO discrepancy for example; many folks who have tested them have shown that the GH1 at 400 ISO is noticeably more sensitive than the 7D at 400 ISO, leading them to the conclusion that the GH1 is "faster" than its stated ISO, or that the 7D is slower than its stated ISO.

So actual ISO numbers should be taken as a ballpark and not much more than that.

I'm sure this has been covered in the past 70 pages, but if not. Will the current batteries for the HVX200 work with the AF100?

I have some Zeiss lens with Nikon F-mounts, what would be the recommended adaptor to fit them to the AF100?

I have heard this debated, but never saw a definitive answer. Will my Zeiss 85mm lens still be 85mm when connected to the adaptor to the AF100?

ugh.

-avccam batteries only
-ebay has several nikon G - m43
-yes it will be 85 mm but cropped to a field of view of 170mm

No, it uses the AVCCAM batteries, the ones that work with the HMC150/HMC40.

There are many out there, some better than others. The best I've heard reported is the CameraQuest/Voigtlander adapters, but they're substantially more expensive.

Of course it'll still be 85mm. However, the field of view will be more like that of an 85mm on a movie camera, not 85mm on a stills camera. If your base of reference is a 35mm cinema camera (or APS-C), your 85mm lens will have the field of view of a 100mm lens on a cinema camera. If your base of reference is the 35mm still photography frame, then the 85mm on the AF100 will have a field of view more like a 160mm on the stills camera.

Dcloud I have a small set of Zeiss ZF.2 lenses. As I understand it, with the AF100 and a 2x crop factor:
- my 18mm wide becomes a 36mm (moderate wide)
- my 28mm becomes a 56mm (good standard view)
- my 50mm becomes a 100mm (good portrait lens)

I'm using a Kipon Nikon to Micro 4 3 adapter I got at Adorama for $57 on my GH1 without any issues.

Do you have the kit lens for your GH1? If so, you can see exactly what your other lenses will look like. Put the GH1 on 18mm, and -- that's what your ZF 18mm will look like. Zoom the GH1 to 28mm and -- that's what the AF100 will look like with the ZF 28mm. Zoom it to 50mm and take a look through the lens, that's what the AF100 would look like with the 50mm lens on.

Unfortunately that video has been posted, and discussed at length already...we're ALL awaiting some new video.

This camera is looking GREAT in so many ways. Cheers, Panny!

My only disappointment so far is 8-bit (as opposed to 10-bit) out of the HD-SDI port. I can overlook the fact that it has no built-in P2, but I was really hoping to connect a P2 recorder and record some sweet, sweet AVC-Intra.

I was on the fence too about selling the HMC150s but sometimes you just need a camera like that to hammer some nails and I don't think the AF100 would be so great for shooting a concert or a live event with lots of action. Man, it would be tough to shoot racing. That's been some of the most challenging stuff I've ever had to shoot, especially on a short track or oval...

Cheers all for this new found glory.

10-bit would be nice, but my 8-bit HPX500 has been a good camera for me. Now, do I sell the 500 for the AF100?

My 500 isn't going anywhere because there are some shoot I still need a servo zoom lens.

I'll still pick up an AF-100 for the artsy fartsy stuff though.

Another question that I don't think has been asked yet:

Will there be intervalometer-like settings for timelapse? I'm assuming we will have the same low frame rate options as the 170, but what about slow shutters? Hopefully we can get a lot slower than 1/15!

It is impossible on AF100.
Because of strong OLP filter.

And this is sad as it could be extremely popular option.

Yes. If it had that capacity, it would make the AF100 one camera that could be put in service for either conventional camcorder deep DOF assignments, or more cinematic shallow DOF projects. I think that if I bought the AF100 I would still need something like HMC150.

Thanks for explaining that it is the OLP filter that prevents this. Could you please elaborate?

Thanks for posting those links Vitaliy. I should have stated that I understand the rudiments of the OLPF and why it would be tuned differently for optimizing still image capture than for video (and for example, that's why AF100 can't take hi res stills, and why DSLR would have aliasing). But I don't understand what the OLPF consideration is regarding the digital zoom feature used on GH2.

Pre-Orders?

Pre-Orders?

We're almost reaching the month of October... Does anyone know anything about pre-ordering of the AF101 European version of this camera? I really would like to pre-order so I could wait as little as possible to get my cameras in December.

I really am behind schedule in my work and if I buy another camera to rush things, I'll be loosing money having to sell it afterwards to buy the AF101... since that's the camera I really need.

But I don't understand what the OLPF consideration is regarding the digital zoom feature used on GH2.

To understand, look at OLP filter as image smoothing algorithm.
And it is very strong as it is tuned to allow only 1920x1080 images to be sharp.
All still images with larger resolution will be unsharp (like resized or interpolated ones).
So, 1:1 mode can be made on this sensor as we see in GH2 case.
But because of OLPF in AF100 all you could get is creamy picture, with resolution similar to 2.6x digital crop from original frame.

It is not extremely accurate explanation, but I don't want to go to frequencies, etc.
