Adobe moves to Creative Cloud, Cancels Creative Suite

Except that's not true. You have a full year to upgrade when a new version comes out...it doesn't happen automatically.
No, but you will have to upgrade eventually. And if Adobe did with Premiere what Apple did with FCP and removed functionality, you'd have no option to stay with a version. The lock-in -- and Adobe's market share (COUGH monopoly COUGH) -- would dissuade them from reinstating deleted functionality. Apple capitulated with FCP only because of the defection to Premiere, Avid, etc. They had a misstep and seemed truly flummoxed that people protested or didn't agree that the Apple way is always the best way.

Interesting to see that FCPX keeps cropping up in these threads about the CC. FCPX is a great piece of software right now, and heading in the right direction with all the (free) updates we've been having. I'm surprised to see people saying if Apple could release FCP8 they'd be on track; clearly those people are using X wrong because most users could never go back to 7 once they get a hang of the workflow in X (it takes a little getting used to but its worth it).

However, as someone who uses FCP regularly, I have to say I really like what is happening with Adobe. So now I can rent After Effects or Photoshop an a monthly basis when I need it for specific projects? That is very cool. So as an FCP user I will defiantly sign up to the CC to take advantage of both worlds.

The issue isn't whether the Creative Cloud is a good idea. For some users, it's ideal. The problem is that Adobe is making it mandatory instead of optional.

You don't "rent" you are locked in to a lease - that does not end….

Yes, I was going to upgrade to CS6 - not anymore….
If anyone out there produces templates for After Effects - I think you will have limited clients for CS6 templates.

Before, a lot of people upgraded every other version, which might be three years or more. Forcing it after a year is different.

And some of us crazies skipped two versions before
upgrading *gasp*. This is really about control.
The consumer used to have control and chose
when the feature set of an upgrade was worth their
dollars. Now, Adobe is taking that control from you.
Many consumers won't like this.

I'm amazed at how many people are against this so firmly.

On the camera end of things, with so many models competing with each other the consumer is winning. On the NLE side... Apple had the FCPX screwup, Avid isn't reporting to stock holders & now Adobe is replacing customers with tenants. I wonder if Vegas is going to be some surprise underdog in 2 yrs that comes to rule the roost.

If enough people speak up they might be forced to offer both. I just don't trust that the feature improvements will be earth shattering every year. These programs get refined over time and they basically have the core functionality already baked in. There is not much I can't do with CS5 at the moment. The consumer gives up the right to easily vote with their feet once locked in to the CC. You can not just skip a generation because it does not help you very much by upgrading. You either have to pay or use CS5 - 6.

Glad Edius is my main editor. I mainly use everything but Premiere in the Creative Suite anyway.

Sony needs to get Vegas Pro on the Mac, then do a competitive upgrade- like what Adobe did to FCPX. They need to jump on this....

That would be good to see, and Sony may do just that. I'm a bit sceptical that they actually will, though, as Sony competes with Apple in the PC space, and I have an easier time seeing Sony try to use Vegas to lure Mac customers over to the Sony Vaio line. On the other hand, Vegas and Vaio are under different divisions afaik, so maybe Vegas for Mac could happen. MS Office for Mac exists after all.

From Adobe's user agreement:

11.4 The Software may automatically download and install updates from Adobe. These updates are designed to improve, enhance and further develop the Services and may take the form of bug fixes, enhanced functions, new Software modules, and completely new versions. You agree to receive such updates (and permit Adobe to deliver these to you with or without your knowledge) as part of your use of the Services.

Sure, they want to attract users to the cloud with initial promises like "no automatic updates", but what would you be more willing to put your faith in in the long term? A Marketing Department promise, or the license agreement fine print?

It's the same case with the pricing - Adobe's marketing team are saying one thing to try and attract us to the Cloud, but they've got clauses in the fine print that basically says they can change their mind at any time they feel like it -and I think they'll "feel like it" as soon as they have most people on board. They've said publicly that they do not intend to raise prices anytime soon - but the terms and conditions give them the ability to change the price at any time without warning.

I guess I'm glad I just bought the production suite. Fed X just delivered it today. I really can't stomach a $50 bill every month for software I could own. I just don't see how anyone would go for that, but I guess I'm just getting older and out of touch. I was using a 10 year old version of PS Elements that worked fine and never ever upgraded it.

Sometimes I wonder if the whole world hasn’t gone crazy!
Seems to me that across the board (and I don’t mean just in our industry) people are getting really good at bitching about stuff.
Don’t like the deal? Of course, get off the train . . . go with something else (there are many options).

But honestly, when I read the comments about, “ooh ooh, Apple ought to just jump in there and . . .”
That nearly made me shoot the milk I was drinking out my nose, ha ha!
Adobe didn't do anything to Apple . . . Apple did to Apple and Adobe took advantage of it just like Avid did.

Is anyone REALLY going to try to compare the suite of tools you get in the Cloud with FCPX? That's funny!

Yeah sure, don’t upgrade . . . that’ll fix ‘em!
Although if we hadn’t we wouldn’t have to worry about editing any of the present day material recorded by our cameras (and likely won’t with what comes in the not too distant future).

Someone (might have been a different thread, can’t remember) already made the point that the cost of the boxed Master Collection and one version upgrade is equivalent to about 5 years on the Cloud, so there you go.

Personally, while I own both the Cloud and a boxed version (as well as Media Composer and the most current Edius Broadcast) I’m looking forward to the intro of CS7 only costing me $29.99 when it intros in June.
For those of you with multiple workstations you may want to fully investigate the Creative Cloud for teams thing (I don’t know how it works).

And if there was any confusion (which likely was mine), the $29.99 thing is available to everyone from CS3 forward . . . not just CS5 or CS5.5.
