AdFest 2007

Seems like a largely favorable response though.

Remember this is where both Scott brothers got their start and pioneered many in camera visual techniques that often thrill and occasionally induce migrains, which they are still using today.

Also Alex Proyas (Dark City) got his start in commercials.

Those are just some directors off the top of my head, sure there are lots more.

Alex Proyas does great stuff - I saw one of his early shorts as well recently. For Dark City, I think he draws a lot from Fritz Lang's Metropolis though (while it is of course a great film).

Gonna be one fun fest. Lookin' forward to seein' what everyone puts together.

If I can get this short cut and VFX done I'll make another effort at the DVXuser Fest.

Side Note.

If you have a friend that has not watched Dark City yet...

Tell them to turn down the volume until Rufus Sewell wakes up in the bathtub.

The opening V.O. ruins the movie. Without the V.O., when he wakes up in the bath tub you don't know if he's crazy or not for the rest of the movie. I saw it in a test screening and the studio had not made them ad the V.O. yet and that dramatic question, solving that mystery, really made the movie riviting, even though lots of the VFX weren't done yet. The openning V.O. tells you exactly what's going on, so you are now officially AHEAD of the movie in the 1st 30 seconds.

I mean can you imagine the Matrix if Fishburne had come on at the top and told you what the Matrix was and then the movie started?

Anyway that's my personal crusade. To introduce people to Dark City who haven't seen it without the studio induced V.O.

For the record i wasn't trying to be rude or inconsiderate. I was just looking forward to another FilmFest so soon after getting involved with the last one. From my own experience through university i didn't much like making commercials and much preferred making short films. And you're right, nobody is forcing anyone to take part, but i'll be hard pressed to find a better online community than dvxuser.

I'm sure it'll be really fun for all that takes part, and something a bit different, just not my cup of tea i'm afraid.

This is at LEAST the third time I've seen ya say this on this site. LoL. Definitely a personal Crusade and I agree with ya on doing that. Even re-watching it this way makes for the good.

haha, well I am sure there will be a 4th when it comes up again ...

Maybe that could be my commercial.

"Kinetica: The society for watching Dark City the right way since 1998"

Then we have an entry for JDS! Woooo!!! (words twisted)

On Topic:

Do we have to adhere to the laws of commercial advertising? No guns, can't drink alcohol, no sex, etc?

Just want to clarify that. I know it's a Rated R deal, just wanted to know if these restrictions had been thought-up by the Fest crew.

I doubt you'd have to stick to those rules. If they're saying R or less rating, then there are going to be some VERY interesting commercials out there. Also, keep in mind, these could be 'European' commercials, which has just about an 'anything goes' atmosphere to them.

Also, don't beer commercials show drinking of alcohol?

Alrighty, DVXfest commercial style. I know, stop asking questions. Just wanted to make sure and not have certain people familiar with the regulations of content limit them.

yeah it would be good to clarify that because we could get people going around to other people's threads and stamping them "a real commercial" or not

if I do one it will be like an American commercial for network TV. I mean it would seem kind of pointless to go through this gauntlet and not come out with something for your reel.

Exactly. A lot of people that look at commercial reels are looking for edgy, innovative and traditional advertising styles ALONG with an acute understanding of the "rules". Being able to stretch them and not break them.

In most alcohol commercials, you may see people pouring drinks over each other's heads. Opening a bottle, swimming through the air, catching the last drop in a cup... I don't think you ever see them actually drink on television; at least not in the US.

I am more than likely incorrect on this, those are just things that I've learned while working with commercial directors.

Adhering to the rules of advertisement might actually benefit more-so in the long run for those pushing the work into reel space.

I'm going to make one with Columbia or Nigeria as my target audiences. It'll likely be about coke (sniff, sniff) or blood diamonds, and the benefits to the consumer(s), as well as the economy said export bolsters.

Just when I thought I could escape advertising, you guys pull me back in. Time to dig through 14 years' worth of client rejections.

Very cool topic.

A perfect example of how it's "Quality" not "Quantity" that counts.

Heck, most good Demo Reels are short too. Who has the time to watch a long one?
