AdFest 2007

I don't think the product should matter/be taken into consideration, personally. This is a "filmmaking" group, not an "inventors" group.

I'll see that you end up shooting city council meetings in Kansas for the local public access channel for the rest of your miserable life

What's it pay? Kyle Stebbins is interested in this gig.

im kind of nervous about the Kinetica logo because fonts can dictate what the style and genre is. Just use impact! Just kidding, i'm sure it'll be fine.

Is this being treated like an actual commercial or like a 30 second film knowing we're having fun with the genre. (ie. are judges taking sellability into account?)

McLeish, that depends on whether you'll be taking sellability into account. You've seen what happens during SpyFest when people don't think a film fits within a certain genre - it can be a deal killer.

Make a commercial for the product indicated to the deliverable specification. That we're called on to act as both agency and pro-co only serves the community better from a learning standpoint.

I've worked with the biggest agencies (Bozell, Goodby Silverstein, BBDO) and I'll tell you that it's a fascinating business. Reseach and application become knowledge for your future business.

I probably won't be writing or directing anything for this fest (although you never know what could pop into my head), I am open to working with others on a project. I have just about all the equipment that would be needed. I can DP, operate camera, edit, color correct, sound edit, and mix.

All right... I'll wait a bit to see if a logo materializes soon, since I think that will inform my choices, but I've got 2 or 3 good ideas that fit styles I wanted for my reel anyway! I'm excited.

I think "sellability" is pretty damn important. But, that said, there are many effective commercials out there that are basically micro-narrative films. They hit on branding more than on "buy our product", and I think that's great. The Zune commercials, the most recent Tiger Beer campaign, even the 1984 ad which Jason has already mentioned. Sometimes (Pirelli's, for instance), they go too far. So it's a balancing act. Lots of very difficult balancing acts in :30.

My guess is that Jarred/Mods have a reason to this, and this site attracts a lot of attention with other professional companies/industries looking at it (one of the reason for the language filter that's in place, etc.).

Soooo..... I think sellability is key. It's what commercials are about, afterall. So if a filmmaker is to take this seriously, then they'll want to make the best commercial they possibly can.

For those who just want to have fun, make a spoof, etc. and not care so much about sellability (i.e. I stated a few pages back that I'd imagine a 30% weighting towards "does this make the consumer/end user want to use/buy the product/service?"), then just have fun with it ... and know that it likely wouldn't win (IMO), or fullfill what this festival may be about, with regards to drawing some outside attention.

WooHoo ... I hope you have a hand drawn not-scary creature fly up out of whatever your product is

WELL actually I do that! :D

WE are doing something different for this fest... Matt is doing two, I am doing two, we and Anthony (Son of Bond) is doing two as well. We are keeping them low effects (maybe) and we are all crewing on each others. That should be fun!

Yes, we are still working on Sleeper... we need just a little break though.

I really hope people think outside the box on this one, its painful enough to sit through commercials as is. My friend just did a mcdonalds ad and it was almost high art. he used an amazing spoken word hip hop song while intercutting between grainy handheld super8 footage of minorities in NYC. its gorgeous. All's im sayin' is be creative!

I have been trying to modify the last to posts to clarify ans correct erros, but it won't let me so....

to clarify, I meant can we make the logo 3D or stylize to fit our look... you know, stuff along those lines.:Drogar-Dum(DBG):
