A7s sample footage

Hold on to that comment Squig, you might be surprised which camera is which... A7s is the one on the left.

That's weird. I do test raw stills mode to see what the sensor is capable of myself but the true test is which one produces the best final graded video. I'm leaning more toward the A7s over the MK3 raw but the highlight aliasing concerns me.

Bit off topic question - does the A7s auto correct Sony lenses (distortion, vignetting) when shooting video?

I had the 18-105mm lens for a week or so and didn't notice any of the normal "distortion" that you would see on cameras that didn't have built in auto-correction (eg. the current version of the FS700). So in my experience, the answer is yes.

Very nice fluid moves! Thanks for sharing.
What's your impressions on skin tones rendition? I don't know if it's just because of the light quality, but the few shots were we see her closer left me with an impression of barbie/plasticness that isn't exactly pleasing.
I felt the same watching Emmanuel Pampuri's video, so this is a bit concerning.

A happy coincidence (tho not for my wallet, who needs food anyway right?), the A7S came in the same day as the DJI Ronin for me.

Instead of a straight-forward test, I decided to really push the A7S in particular. I wanted to see if I could get away with usable footage at f/7.1 so that everything is in focus. With some noise-reduction, it's not turribbbllle (see that in Cleveland Brown's voice).

The second one, I decided to not go above f/4 and ISO 16,000.... and honestly, even though the compression hurts it, the noise coming out at that place isn't that bad.

Still working on my review. But here's a quick snapshot. High contrast scene pushed to the limits of the raw files. A7s in RAW at ISO100 vs a very popular DSLR. Same exposure. Same Camera raw settings. No comments...

So, which one on the right side?

Am I right to understand reduced DR at low iso as the price paid for increased DR at high iso?

And a tangential question: assuming 12MP is enough, for stills, does it actually make sense to use the A7R in good light and switch to the A7S above iso 6400 to maximize DR?

I'm starting to feel exactly that way.

A7s on the left. D800 on the right.

What were your settings on the A7s: exposure, profile, post? I haven't seen that kind of noise. I have seen people shoot very noisy video due to underexposure but with correct exposure noise is not really an issue.

read my description. :D

Pink pattern noise points me of Canon DSLRs. I guess 5DMkIII.
Edit: Or not?

Hmmm... a few stills posted at dpreview.com show none of the noise MacGregor is finding.

ISO 100:

ISO 125:

ISO 250:

Granted these are JPEGs and dpreview gives no numbers in regards to how they were processed.

I'm not saying MacGregor is wrong, I'm just saying I'm not seeing it in other low ISO photos that are out there. I also looked at a few of the RAW ISO 100 images here and found no evidence of such noise either. Weird.

Edit: I guess a bit more information on 'pushing RAW files to their limits' would be helpful.

A BTS shot from our short, Delta: a high contrast, high dynamic range A7S raw shot before and after ACR:

I don't recall seeing noise like MacGregor's example so far- curious how to reproduce?

That's strange. I don't get noise like that at all, let alone at ISO 100. This is with the latest ACR updates?

See I'm not crazy.

Mac I suspect either it's an ACR issue or maybe you got a dud because that red/pink noise just isn't a characteristic of the A7s. Show us an S-Log/S-Gamut or cinema screenshot @ +1.7-+2 EV under similar lighting.
