A7s sample footage

I left a comment on the video on Vimeo and he blasted back at me hard! I'm not the type of guy to argue with people online so I deleted my comment. All I said was it wasn't to my taste and to bronzy. I guess if you don't love what he does dont comment. Either way I appreciate his contributions but I think he's a touch sensitive.

I've been playing with the A7s and we'll be putting together a technical analysis of the A7s and GH4 soon (dynamic range, noise, resolution, skin tones etc).
So far I'm not as happy as I expected with the results. It's not bad, but maybe not up to all the hype :(

I actually revisited the GH4 too. I was having some real issues with skin. Here is what I learned. Maybe this helps.

Cinelike D:

Don't use any Highlight and Shadow adjustments. This does very strange smearing to the image and it's very noticeable to the skin and hair.

Don't take the contrast down. This also has a strange effect on detail.

In all settings take noise reduction to -5. This is a big one. It's a detail killer at 0 and the image looks so much better with it basically turned off.

Boosting the master pedestal to +10 or even +15 is very effective to bring the image up. I doubted this but after testing it I didn't find anything negative.

iDynamic set to standard is like a light switch. I found no negative effect on the image like noise.

Thats called trolling bro. No reason just to say you don't like some sh** for reason. We wouldn't do that at a party or social gathering in real life. Anyway, just saying keep it positive! :)

Wow. Nobody has called me a troll before. Congrats on post #5. Welcome to DVXuser.

Honestly I like it when people criticise my work. It helps me to become a better filmmaker. If I see what they mean but don't agree I can let it slide but if it makes me think about an aspect of my work and how I can improve it then great. When someone criticises my work they are actually helping me more than when someone praises it (of course it's nice to get praise though!).

Anyway sorry for the off topic but had to comment. I hate the idea of people feeling like they can't criticise.

Reminds me about stories abut John Coltrane, stories repeated in films, that even though he was certainly the greatest sax jazz payer of his time when he met an another sax player he would ask what they could teach him.

I don't think there's any point in telling him, but the look was a bit too much for me too. It's an artistic decision, though, so if he wants to go with it well it's his work. Not really useful as a camera test unless you're going to go with a similar look too, though.

@macgregor: the a7s needs slog2, otherwise I can already tell you it's going to look like another run-of-the-mill camera, unlikely to stand out (except maybe for the 4K, if you care about that)

Lower your expectations Samuel about the SLog possibilities. :(

@ Miller LUT debate:
It's probably more of a semantic issue. He called the LUT a "base grade" LUT while it is obviously a heavily stylized look with its destroyed dark detail and lifted base and certainly not a general purpose thing.

Lower your expectations Samuel :(

A7s resultados preliminares RD no necesariamente util.
cine4 +4 1/3 N -7 (igual en 1080) 12 1/3stops
slog +5 2/3 N - 5.5 12 1/3 stops
PPoff 1080 XAVCs +3 1/3 N -6 2/3 (pero muy posterizado) 11stops

These numbers look about right to me. Can you also do Cine1? :)

What concerns me most is it's a bit unpredictable which wouldn't be so bad if it was raw, the Shogun LUTs should help a lot. It seems to be fussier with light than most cameras.

I would have to agree with Erik here. From what I see, Erik never blasts anyone and keeps it very polite. I can understand if he posted two words like 'It sucks' and just bolted. In the end, I guess maybe James Miller just might be protecting potential sales of the LUT:-)

mmm... I'll obviously run my own tests, as you are currently doing, and that's what I will trust the most. But this looks like a huge difference (and bigger looking at the image than going by the calculated numbers), I can't see it being much smaller than that. We'll know soon enough...

I shot some stuff at the proving grounds today & looking at it I think there's a bit more DR than the MK3 raw. I really need some LUTs designed for the A7s to get the most out of it.

I don't know Erik personally at all. I live on the east coast. I can say that he is one of the more openly informative and helpful people in the media community. His blogs are fantastic. I have purchased lots of gear where the deciding factor was his review. I commend him for being a positive force in the business. If you have been visiting these sites for any amount of time, you would see how comedic calling him a troll is.

I think as soon as whoever he was threw a "bro" in there you knew he was being a clown. Disregard and move on. As you were Erik, continue with your very helpful contributions (including rightful criticism of that LUT.)

"you mad bro?"

Yeah I've used that Impulz Kodak Vision 3 50D LUT on a few short films I shot on the A7S and FS700 in SLOG2 and it's just awesome.

I have no idea where and how they got that number. My tests don't show anything close to 14 stops.
