A7s sample footage

Clarification of the last two pages of this thread:

What "green issue"? S Gamut? If anyone is struggling with that, change color mode to pro or rec709. The wedding footage looked fine to me. You could probably recover more from the highlights but hey, you don't get to light events how you want them. You can expect to blow highlights. Comes with the territory.

ejdge, Nice job on the wedding film. I liked the look. Moody, punchy.

cyork suggests changing the COLOR MODE to pro or rec709. But the comment about highlights makes it seem like he's talking about the gamma setting.

Cyork I don't use the s gamut myself, but everyones footage i see using it has the green problem...

Question though. By using the rec709 how much will I loose in terms of DR?

reem12 thinks that cyork is suggesting to change the GAMMA to rec709, hence the question about loosing dynamic range.

I don't have a scientific answer but I don't see much of anything being tossed. It's just remapping color from what I can see. Reds are red, blues are blue etc. Not as much balancing needed in post for sure. After I correct sgamut footage for white balance and adjust sat, it looks pretty good. Seems even the F55 Luts "fix" the greens as if it's by design that it has that initial shift.

cyork thinks they are still discussing the colour mode and responds accordingly.

You will loose a lot of DR. I did a test the other day and it was a big eye opener. Of course if you're used to something like H264 on a Canon 5dIII you'll be surprised how much DR there is on the a7S in standard mode!! =]
I also tried PP5 with Cine1 and Movie with a little in camera saturation (mentioned by someone here)- and met right in the middle with a lot less noise than S-log. I've decided to probably go with this combo for an indoor spot I'll be shooting later next month.

PTRush continues reem12's misconception, thinking they are talking about the gamma setting. And would be correct if this were the case.

Changing PP7 (Slog2 gamma) to a non S-gamut Color Mode (e.g. Pro or Cinema) shouldn't effect dynamic range. Can you tell us what you changed and how you tested?

I'm looking at the camera right now and see absolutely no difference in DR with sgamut vs rec709 color mode. The zebras are the same, the shadows are the same.

jcs and cyork don't interpret the misconception and express their confusion.

I hope I have been of some help

I didn't pick up on any malice there but I'm a bit distracted with dead babies ATM. I'll try to do some more tests tomorrow.

I have read through 126 pages w/o results.
Have a night steadycam long take, through many rooms, stairs, all filled with a profusion of candles
Practical candles will motivate small sources (easily lots of 150/300/650 plus pancake chimeras for ambient fill).
Care to suggest (Cyork, Squig, Kholi?) specific settings I may prefer to begin with when I'll test the camera?
Many thanks

Just go with PP7 (S-log) with +4 saturation & -4 detail & expose @ +1.7EV. No less than +1.3 EV & no more than +2 (multi meter mode). I'd shoot APS-C to be on the safe side with the rolling shutter. Turn airplane mode on to improve battery life.

Yup, this is pretty much it. Do this and you'll get solid footy. (not sarcasm!)

Would rolling shutter be much of an issue for the Steadicam shot described? Perhaps if whip pans were involved, but otherwise....?

My guess would be every clip that exibits a green hue would be the a7s. all footage that I see shot with this and s gamut, unless tweaked seems to have it. not really pleasant to look at, and it seems to cause gradation of the footage when trying to remove it, especially on white surfaces.

I called sony about this today to see if they are aware of this issue, and they've said they have not heard of it. I've not really had this issue with koli's profile but I do tend to like the look of the s gamut minus the ugly green it produces in the footage.

which would those be? I was worried about the green hue of sgamut but I don't see it in any of the graded images... all of the LUTs I used seemed to be designed for it. It's possible some of the other DPs didn't use LUTs and left it in, though.

I will go in sometime tiday and write the names of the projects and post my picks. If you confirm that would be great.

LOL, Yes after reviewing the posts this is correct!

Almost- I understood the misunderstanding and posed the question as a form of diplomacy. Others have also asked if the S-gamut Color Mode has any effect on dynamic range, and is a valid question as who knows how Sony implemented the firmware (logic does not necessarily apply (e.g. record button disabled in video mode)). cyork tested the α7s and answered the question definitively: S-gamut (Color Mode) does not affect dynamic range (gamma affects DR (encoding before compression vs. actual hardware DR which only changes with ISO)).

The rolling shutter in full frame mode is very high (over 30ms), in APS-C mode it's under 20ms. Most pro cameras have under 15ms rolling shutter. Probably not a major issue with an experienced operator but I wouldn't imagine too many operators have worked with a camera with such a high rolling shutter. The last camera I used this bad was the D90. I'll fly it on my Chinese knock off tomorrow & see how it goes.

Flew it the other day at the park and I thought the footage came out just fine. Nothing crazy, just following the kids around. 60p, crop, 60p crop, FF 24p with the Rokinon 35mm cine. Could fly that thing for hours and I'm not in good shape :)

Hi guys! Really appreciate that you are sharing the A7s settings, profiles and results. Seems to be as a good little camera. I was wondering how easy/difficult would be to match the footage from A7s with Canon C100. I am planning on buying probably these two cameras - one for wide shots and one for close-ups and would be interested what you think about combining these two cameras :)

Just looking for a plain explanation for not-so-techies like myself here ;-)
Does this mean that the A7s' DR is the same in all modes but that using the flatter S-Log profile provides more latitude?

S-gamut (Color Mode) does not affect dynamic range (gamma affects DR (encoding before compression vs. actual hardware DR which only changes with ISO)).
