A7s sample footage

I got my A7S yesterday and although I'm pretty terrible at it I gave Slog a shot. I combined a couple of the Impulz LUTs to try to get a filmic look.

Unfortunately I underexposed a few shots which show a lot of noise once I lifted them up (the tunnel shots mainly). I had no idea what I was doing as the menus are quite confusing and exposing Slog is hard. But hey, the camera is a lot of fun.

Thanks for posting. A lot of those high contrast scenes outside with sunlight on the buildings look really good. The first tunnel shot is interesting, the noise is crazy. Is that direct sunlight on the middle wall? Do you remember what the histrogram looked like. I'm wondering if slog is the right choice for down there. Will be interesting learning to judge when not to use slog, how to expose for it and how other profiles look with it.

I would basically ignore the tunnel shots and probably shouldn't have included them in the video. They were my first low light attempt and I underexposed too much. The light on the wall is just outside light coming in, but not sunlight.

I think I didn't even look at the histogram and kept the ISO too low. I lifted them when grading and thats where the noise comes in. The parking garage shots towards the end were shot at a lot higher iso (in the 20000 range I think) in an even darker environment and came out pretty well.

Anyone read this?

Seems pretty bad. I mean, we can always rig the camera, but sometimes I just want to pick it up and shoot and it does not look like it will yield good results. Andrew was using a 35mm in the video and thats pretty wide on FF and probably my most used focal length. Bummer I cant use it handheld with this camera...

This camera's strengths are definitely commendable...but its weaknesses are laughably bad. I'm just seeing more and more hoops to jump through to get consistently good footage....mandatory NDs, mandatory stabilizing, unreliable Metabones adapters, 16-135 filter, using crop mode to avoid jello heaven, fairly poor battery life, 8 bit 420 internal, highlight aliasing, black boarder...the list goes on.

Originally I thought this may be a C100 replacer. In light of all the current info (I do not personally own this camera), I will definitely be sticking with the C100/Ninja...for ease of use alone.

That said, I do look forward to the next generation of this sensor. I'm sure it will pop up again in a new body with a bunch of fixes.

Exactly, I wish this sensor came out in the prototype body they had at NAB 2013. Maybe then they would have enough space for better processing power.

Totally agree...I would easily pay 3-4X the cost of this camera to get most things right. I'm sure that option is around the corner soon.

I think the rolling shutter / jello is the real letdown on this camera. The other stuff, I can work around fairly easily / or it does not bother me to much, but the RS is a killer for anything without a rig. Almost everything on this camera is better than what we have seen on a DSLR before, but the RS just took a huge step back to 2008 and the Nikon D90. All the cool stuff with full sensor readout with no line skipping on a FF sensor, comes at a price. And the price is bloody awful jello for anything handheld.

Unluckily to tell you that there was a video terview with sony crew and asking about the prototype body they had at NAB 2013. they said it will not be release, they just try to get response from ppl see what their feedback about it. The a7s is the camera with the 4k, but who knows later will come in A-mount body size, i think that size might give more power and better video feature, but price of course more higher

Anybody else surprised by how much more they like the a7S image than the F5 /55 ? It's interesting Sony is the manufacturer of both cameras. a7S looks very cinematic to me right off the bat, and the motion rendering feels a lot more like film. The F5/55 scream high def video and don't have that mojo at all.

I understand the gripes and what people may see as major short comings. But my camera arrived today and I've gotten the best image out of this cam then all the other cam's I've owned thus far. In terms of the 8 bit codec. I don't think that is the major weakness on this cam as I was able to recover highlights on this cam that made me feel like I was close to working with raw files. It was astounding to me that I was able to push the codec like that. i will suffer the limitations for this image.

On a side note. This cam dosen't have that glossy/plastic look I'm used to seeing. it has a very nice texture to the image. I'm very happy now. very close to black magic in feel and appearance imo.

Yep. Den Lennie's Scotland shoot felt very Alexa but the latest stuff looks more F35/35mm. I can regrade graded 20Mbit/s MP4s and they don't fall apart. It's pretty incredible for 8bit 420. Can't wait to try recording straight to prores.

As for the rolling shutter, I'm not happy about it but there's 4 ways around it-
Use a stabilizer
Use an OSS lens
Shoot in APS-C mode
Buy another camera and stop whingeing

Yeah it's got very good gauze. I have to do a lot of work to create that in post with the MK3 raw.

Funny how subjective this stuff is, I personally love what the A7s produces and others say it looks all meh. To me its the best image till you get to C100 price levels. 1080p is impressively detailed and there's a lot of latitude compared to the 5d3. Can't wait for the Shogun and 4k.

I'm to excited. I was a little nervous at first looking at all these super animated color graded videos, but straight out the box with the slog 2 and that cinematic motion cadance I knew this would not be going back to b&h no time soon. Ive bought like 4 cams in the last 3 months and ive tried hard to love them but something was missing until now.

The 5d mark II tied me over for 3 years and as long as I get 4k out of this thing down the road I will buy another. Exciting times!

From what I've seen it can do bland video and cinematic looks so I don't know what people are going on about. Just wish mine would hurry up and arrive so I can spend less time hearing people complain and more time shooting.
