A7s sample footage

Does anybody else feel that after the camera shipped it has become a little quiet everywhere? I guess people are probably hunkering down in their caves doing tests or out shooting, saving their results and impressions for a huge blogpost or their podcast or whatever.

Sometimes I miss 2008 when Kholi ran out and bought the Nikon D90 and we all sat up all night while he live updated us on everything he tried and discovered, while he was trying it out. The next day the thread had grown by like fifty pages :)

Where is Kholi? I would have thought he'd be all over the A7s. He's become quite the Blackmagic fanboy. I can tell you from experience falling in love with an Australian always ends in tears.

It certainly grades well. This is with a tweaked F55 S-Log2 SGamut LUT in Filmconvert.

I just have to figure out this quicktime aliasing thing and I'll be happy.

I've got this and a couple more up on my page if you're interested: https://vimeo.com/99391042

Thanx!
This looks good actually. The skin in the shadows (look below the neck) looks like it can use a bit more tonal precision, but this seems useable.
Here is a quick grade on top of your grade, hope you don't mind. :)
The camera seems to pick skin hue variation easily so I compressed skin hues to even out green and magenta peaks. Also added some contrast.

Looks good! I'm uploading a small compilation of ungraded S-Log2 stuff right now. So you guys can grade for yourselves using a cleaner pallet.

Cool thx. Yeah nice grade cpc, I just gave it a bit more in the highlights to make it pop. Looks very good for 8bit 420.

I'll have high res DNxHD available shortly for grading. I'll put this same clip up later graded my own way as well.

A quick grade in Speedgrade and some sharpening:

I think the image grades well and can take a nudge of sharpening without problem.
The 60p clip is worse with alaising and not as sharp but that is to be expected.
The DR seems to be amazing with this profile and the shots are indeed underexposed by alot, they could be recorded three stops brighter and even as it stands the noise did not look that bad and could take a grade. The codec seems pretty good as well the waterstream looked good, but Im sure (almost) that you will benefit from doing 4k out to recorder, even 1080p recorder it terms of getting a sharper, cleaner image. So far looking good!

You mentioned in a vimeo post that you were underexposing the s-log. Try overexposing by 3 stops. If Samuel is right you'll be able to recover all the highlights.

Roman,

Having shot some great skin tones with the Blackmagic, what are your thoughts? Have you shot anything with the GH4?

Thanks for making the frames available. I cant wait for the DNxHD.

I was able to pull a lot more out of the shadows and put most of the highlights back in only using Irudus Tonalizer in FCPx.

Surprisingly seemed to hold up better than ProRes444 files exported out of Davinci from 5DIII RAW

Love to see what this camera could look like under different circumstances. I preordered mine yesterday, after weeks of pondering. Selling the 5DIII =]

It was a mixed bag, since my zebras were off it was inaccurate anyway. I was for the majority, underexposed from about 1.5-2 stops to normal exposure. I'm still testing stuff out... but from what I can see so far, it's been way easier to bring up the bottom end rather than recover the top end. Gonna try more stuff today.

anyone test the a7s will overheat or not? how long can it last if continuous recording. After the max record limit and straight start another record

Can someone confirm. I saw a recent review that RAW still images are not available at the moment. I have a few photo shoots coming up and would like to know if RAW imagery is currently usable in photoshop. Thanks!

I can't be 100% sure, but a lot of people over on dpreview is saying it is supported in the latest Adobe Camera Raw. I guess you are refering to the Camera Store review. I also think that was strange. Possibly they did the review before the Adobe Raw update of june 18 (I think), and have just waited to publish it until they got the go ahead from Sony?

Update: this guy clearly says they are supported http://briansmith.com/sony-a7s-field-test-2/
