A7s sample footage

Kholi, did you get one to test from Stancali? It will be interesting to see you put it through the paces down at Venice and comparing it to the BMPC (and BMCC) of scenes you've shot in the past. But please make sure to shoot in different gammas too. S-log, Cine1, cine 2 etc.

Hey Dusty, my cam hasn't arrived yet (should be Saturday). I'll let Kholi know once it's here and he'll do some tests.

Update: Just got email from Fedex that my shipment will be delayed until Tuesday 7/8!

Good thing I bought those Incredible Hulk gloves last week. Brb smashing things.

Wow! My A7s arrived today. Just 3 days from DigitalRev in Hong Kong! (PAL / NTSC switchable version... it does have 24p too.)

I only got a very short time to play with it (too much other work to do today for playing with new toys), but my first impressions: I LOVE IT!

Build quality is great. Feels nicely solid and better in the hand (to me) than the GH4. Controls all seem to fall where I would expect them. And the image out-of-the-box fills me with warm fuzzy feelings... :)

I'll check the dynamic range against my C300 tomorrow (and post some grabs / footage if I get time).

I also got the 24-70 f4 OSS... I didn't have any problems with rolling shutter jello effect using this lens handheld... It's a shame the sensor readout isn't a bit faster – but I don't think it's going to be a problem for me. Time to splash out on a gimbal...?

Yes, I think a gimbal is well suited to this type of thing - I am thinking of selling my steadicam which really can't deal with such a light weight - even with a 5D I add tons of weight to the top stage.

Since you got the 24-70 would be interested in your impressions of it as well - how is the autofocus while shooting, for example...

***To really get an idea of the noise levels, download the original file!!! Vimeo pretty much removed all of the noise that was inherent in the footage.***

As I tried different picture profiles, I found that I liked the out-of-camera look of picture profile (henceforth shortened to "PP") 5, even though PP7, which by default uses s-log 2, gives a greater dynamic range. As I looked at the raw files, I was shocked at how much noise appeared in the black areas of the image while using s-log2; the noise wasn't nearly as apparent while using pp 5, which uses a "Cine" gamma setting.

Stu Maschwitz's first thoughts blog post, including test footage:

He seems very happy with the camera
The combination of 8-bit, S-Log2, and AVCHD compression should result in scrambled eggs. Instead, to me, it’s just magic.
After years of suffering with the razor’s edge exposure window of the 5D, this is simply glorious.
This camera rocks. It’s already aced my litmus test that the GH4 failed—it makes me excited to go out and shoot.

Nowhere in Stu's post did he mention rolling shutter. It wasn't an issue in his video, though a lot of it was handheld...

In the stuff I make / plan on making, that's about the extent of handheld movement I would do anyway. Ed David's, otherwise awesome, footage had me seriously considering returning the camera because of the jello. Now I don't know.

Samuel H suggests filming rapid motion in crop mode to avoid RS. As the eye will not see detail during rapid movement this makes sense, and restores the camera as a narrative tool.

Also, Stu didn't talk about RS in the blog post, I added the comment there because of some previous twitter stuff.

(yes, I stalk him, but only because he's awesome)

Samuel,

I know he didn't mention it, that's my point ;) If it didn't bother him enough to write about it, how big of a deal is it really for the type of shooting he does?

I pieced this together from the footage I shot yesterday after I picked up the camera. It's rough, but it's got a bit of everything--bright sun, night, jiggly, skin tone, voices.

He does mention it now, I think he updated the blogpost. Says he used the rolling shutter repair function in premier on a few shots.

I saw a couple of 120fps that looked like horses*%t but this looks pretty good - really could intercut with 1080 without issue. I guess it all comes down to the user and Roman's got more skills than those other tests.

Although I'll say that the water on the leaves shows what I didn't like about the 120fps before - I wonder if it gives that lower res look on stuff with a lot of motion in the frame?

* Both little human and big human definitely had a blast :)
* 120p looks a lot better than I expected when I read about it in the specs
