a6300 news

(if the camera is moving, then 1080p-instead-of-4K isn't such big a deal, it's just a matter of being able to go back and forth easily)

In terms of resolution, yes, it is not a big deal in moving shots. But this will generally increase aliasing since the 1080p non-crop modes surely do some lineskipping.

Is it line skipping/pixel bining? I was thinking it should get a7s comparable 1080p quality?
Well, it certainly isn't a full readout seeing as the RS is less than half the 4K mode. Cinema5d report aliasing in 1080p: https://www.cinema5d.com/sony-a6300-vs-sony-a7s-ii-how-good-is-it-really/
Sounds like skipping to me, but could be some form of binning. The A7s doesn't skip in 1080p in both FF and crop modes.

If the a6300 was a 12mp camera it would be very nice for video. But obviously it is geared towards photography.

Overheating reports and the worse rolling shutter we've seen from any camera -ever- gives me serious pause with this camera. The A7s and A7rII RS is already really bad, and the a6300's is much worse without the benefit of any IBIS. Mine is supposed to be delivered today, I'm considering just returning it unopened. I can live with the crop in various video modes, but those two issues combined with soft 1080p from the samples I've seen, geez I just don't know anymore. I can roll my A7s until my 8 batteries are spent with no issues, I'm seriously thinking about getting a Ninja Assassin and recording 4k externally with the A7s instead, but then we're talking about a much larger footprint which I was hoping to avoid. The highs and lows with Sony bodies are unmatched by any other brand.

Is the RS worse than, say, the 5d Mark ii ?

Because that's what I've been working with for the past 5 years.

I believe the A6300 has won the worst RS award of all time. As I understand it, its the worst RS ever rated in a camera. From what I have seen online, I would never consider using this camera hand held. Use only on sticks or stabilizers.

The handheld footage I have seen is pretty out of control.

I haven't seen any overheating reports, most of what I have seen is people saying it doesn't overheat.

There are a couple in this thread: http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/19110-sony-a6300-4k/?do=findComment&comment=136652

There's a thread on Dpreview with a couple reports as well. Not exhaustive by any means, but it seems to be surfacing.

The skeptic in me read early reports from users on a Sony junket to Miami with a grain of salt. After going through this with the A7rII - even though it was eventually resolved - not sure I want to go down that road again.

I would agree. The rolling shutter issues show that the processor is operating a peak level to get the job done. This is never a good sign for electronics in confined spaces. We will see over time but It certainly looks like a situation in the works.

My first test from a6300 using slog 3 in 4K down converted to android size file then uploaded to vimeo. Also works great on my DJI ronin m in AF mode. The reason I wanted this was for the AF and internal 4K.
Sony a6300 1/45 I 800 Sony sel5018 left over from my nex-6. This is exactly what I want.

I think it looks gorgeous. Is that Moiré on the subject's hair?

I think it is from the compression down from 4K to android then to Vimeo compression. It looks a lot different when looking at the original. Shot using slog-3 then added Sony Slog3 to REC 709 lut in Resolve and then exported it. I use the GH4 an A7S. I was saving for an A7 Mii to use for internal 4K. I don't think I need one now.

Lets see if you guys can help me on this one.

With the sony alpha cameras the moment you format a card, the files structure gets reset. C0001.mp4 ... etc
Is there a way in these cameras to avoid having duplicate names on each card/camera? with long projects it's a mess.
And if there is nothing, do you know any free software for quickly renaming bulks of files?
thanks

In 4K mode it is actually A LOT worse than that. Full table here.

a6300 1080p24 --- 15.2 ms (15.8-14.6)
C300 ------------ 16 ms
5D3 ------------- 20.5 ms (20.7-20.5-20.4)
5D2 ------------- 25.9 ms (25.5-26.4-25.8)
a6300 4K 24fps -- 39.0 ms (39.2-38.9)

Interesting. It's very fast in 1080p mode though, so that's certainly progress of a sort.

True. I've never shot in 4K and don't think I'll be doing it much for the time being. I'm impressed by the NX1!
