a6300 news

If you are new to the APS-C alpha cameras you might want to consider the Sigma DN ART lenses in E-Mount. Sigma also has them in Micro Four Thirds.
On my a6000 I use primarily 2 Sigma DN ART lenses. The 19mm and 30mm. They are very good and inexpensive plus they keep the camera small and light. No adapter needed. E-Mount APS-C lenses. I bought the a6000 primarily to have a camera with me all the time. It's small and light with the Sigma DN and I never hesitate to bring a camera with me. I'm probably going to get the 60mm as well. The AF works very well too.

If I am buying lenses I would rather have them available for my still work as well. So adapting is my preferred method. I just don't know much about the Speedbooster.

A short snippet from a recent Newsshooter article regarding the A6300:

"One thing I learned straight away about the a6300’s phase detection AF is that it doesn’t work with adapted lenses at the moment. If you were hoping it would track well with a Metabones and the Canon lens then you are out of luck. For the system to work you need native Sony E-mount glass."

All of your lenses will work fine with a SB or a smart adapter if all you want is electronic control of the aperture, but I would say keep your expectations low on AF.

Personally, I own mostly EF glass, but I am planning on getting one or two e-mount lenses in the future.

For those who have Sigmas with Canon EF-mount, that mount converter seems to be the best option: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1234034-REG/sigma_89e965_mc_11_mount_adapter_for.html
Also check out that review: http://www.dpreview.com/news/854738...-lenses-full-range-of-af-modes-on-sony-bodies
It should be available at the end of March and Im really waiting to see how it will perform. Its just not clear yet if it will be working only with Sigmas or at some point in the future will also support Canon lenses.
If it works as well as a native Sony lens it will be just great! AF is a really strong point of that camera and it would be pity if you can't take advantage of it.
Appart from the adaptors, if I had to choose from Sony lenses I would go for this one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1001011-REG/sony_selp18105g_18_105mm_f_4_g_lens.html
I know its not THE best, but constant f4 is ok, has stabilization, usable reach and I would call it ''affordable''...

Thanks for the info. I will do some more research then. I do not shoot stills in fast moving environments and am a focus and recompose type of shooter most of the time. I would mainly be using the a6300 for SDOF video work. Some AF would be nice but with the RS I don't think this will be a handheld monster anyway.

Would the normal Metabones have better AF performance than the Speedbooster? Or the same?

I pre-ordered that adapter a week ago. If anyone owns the 18-35mm (which is probably every one), then it should be a super nice alternative to the more expensive MB if it works well.

lol, the 50mm is the nicest out of all of them!

But you can't beat the overall use of the 18-35mm...this fast zoom is just so convenient.

I really regret selling it now. Was going through my gear and found that I wasn't using it that much but with the MC-11 adapter I bet I would. Oh well I can always find one used but I bet they will be more valuable now due to the adapter.

I bought the a6000 primarily to have a camera with me all the time. It's small and light with the Sigma DN and I never hesitate to bring a camera with me. I'm probably going to get the 90mm as well. The AF works very well too.

I fully support this advice, with two corrections:
- The 19mm f/2.8 and 30mm f/2.8 are not on the Art line, they are just DN. --> edit: not true!
- The other one is not a 90mm but a 60mm f/2.8.

But yes: when my girlfriend wanted to take up photography, I gave her my old NEX-5N with just the Sigma 19mm f/2.8 and 30mm f/2.8 and a $25 vintage fast fifty. It's enough for almost everybody, and while it's not a pocket camera it is definitely a pouch camera with these lenses. Now I have to get a camera for my sister and brother-in-law, and it's going to be the a6000... with Sigma 19mm f/2.8 and 30mm f/2.8 and a $25 vintage fast fifty.
For video they are good enough. It's focus-by-wire but it never drove me crazy, and the fact that they have AF made me use them for my biggest personal project to date (I barely had time to shoot everything, so I planned for pre-AF then record).

I love my speedbooster, but it's a mechanical one for Leica-R lenses: I never liked electronic adapters, I always found them to be full of pitfalls and glitches.

^ You're absolutely right: they don't appear as "Art" on amazon, but the Sigma site does indeed say "Class: Art". That's no small feat for a $200 lens.

Well, I personally don't care about that label, since I've owned the original 30/2.8 and it was a great lens, and btw DXO mark currently rates the older version higher, might be sample variation but go figure :)

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say that rolling shutter makes the a6300 almost completely useless to me.

Dayum.

I concur. On my A7s I find full frame RS atrocious and I only ever do moving shots in crop mode. And a6300 RS looks noticeably worse than A7s FF RS. But many find RS less objectionable so I am sure the a6300 will be a success.

What hurts me the most is not that 4K has such bad RS, but the fact that you can't put 1080p-4K on a custom button, or on the quick menu. Same for crop mode on the a7 bodies.

(if the camera is moving, then 1080p-instead-of-4K isn't such big a deal, it's just a matter of being able to go back and forth easily)
