"A Verse Before Dying" - AF-100 Western Short

I do have a question that maybe you can answer - I've always seen and therefore used a circle of confusion of 0.015 for M4/3 (GH1). But pCam has it at .00059 for the GH1, and AF100. Which is correct?

Those numbers are way far apart, but both those numbers look familiar. Is the multiplier in comparison to full frame and one is in comparison to S35?

Maybe S35 is .00059 (for very little difference) and for FF is .015.

I've seen across the Atlantic, here in Rome where I live, your trailer.
It makes me smile movie title: Sergio Leone would probably titled as "Un versetto prima di morire"
I noted with interest your work, I'm owner of Panasonic products (now HMC-151 and now GH13, but I loved most of the DVCPROHD's HVX200).
But on some frames I was disappointed on lighting a bit too artificial, like this below .

I believe that was all natural light.

Okay, correction of what I wrote: Shadow on the hat of - probably - bad guy in front tell's us hard sunlight comes from "north-north-west" (from viewepoint that is) so they had to fill shadowy part (breast, face) of good guy looking towards camera - with reflectors. Maybe a bit too much, still done nicely. Texan sun. Really hard to deal with I believe if you have not a truck-load of equipment with you.

So, yes, natural light in a strict sense.

Actually that is one of the shots that I really dig from the trailer, it looks really natural for me.

Ok, go for the natural light reflected by a reflector.
The light that is reflected on the subject in the background I find it too hard, colder than the surrounding warmer.
I think it would be warmer if you had used a gold reflector

If they would have shot that without controlling some of the light, his face would have been very dark in in the shadows.
Look at the shot right before it. Shooting outside in the sun it always becomes a judgement call
as to how to match or not match from shot to shot. Here the director & DP wanted to light the face
instead of leaving it in the shadows. Go rent some movies and you will see examples where
lighting from shot to shot does not match at all. In a movie theater you cannot jog through
frame by frame to analyze shots like we have the luxury of doing.

I like that the shot - the fact that the full sun is bouncing off the white adobe walls
in the previous shot - sells this shot. This was end of November in Texas but the sun is still pretty stout
even then.

the sun was behind him, and i brought a little bit back so you can see his face. other wise its about 3 stops under. it also looks to me paerhaps that in color correction, the mids were boosted a hair. i seem to remeber his face being a bit darker.

id have to consult mcgeedigital on that front....

I love the fact that we are discussing about lighting and content instead of discussing about the camera, great!!!

really?

really?

if you look very carefully you can see lot's of moire in the grass reflecting in his left eyeball too, Also in this shot there is a hint of noise in the scarface's right pupil.

come on people this is a camera test with great content that everyone's been waiting for and now we're criticizing filmmakers for doing us a favor and putting this puppy through real production and sharing with us?

Lighting is one thing that I notice often when I watch a movie or a fiction.
What I pointed out it can be seen very well in the trailer, of course I posted the single frame to explain better.

Yep. For the complainers now is like the movie sucks but the camera shines. Congratulations Barry, you have succeeded, you are gonna really shows us how great the AF100 can really be. Thanks! LOL!

That seems to make sense. For practical purposes, even though the numbers are way apart, the end calculation seems to be within tenths of inches. Although it's difficult to compare exactly since most of the calculators are doing some type of rounding of numbers. And I really dislike math so have a tendency to lean toward the "good enough, nail it" mentality when anything beyond whole numbers or 6th grade math is involved. :)

Honestly - there is nor "right" or no "wrong" with lighting here. It's a question of style. I would have done it differently, maybe. You would have done it differently, maybe. The next guy or gal would have done it differently. What does it show us, in the end? The camera works - in and under certain conditions - very well.

I dont know if these have been asked before but I would like to know more about the Steadicam and AF 100 . Here's looking at Mikko :)

Was it easy to balance and to fly ?
Which lens seemed to be the easiest to setup with the AF 100 ?
Which max tele length did you guys use ?
Can you the describe the longest take with the AF 100 ? Even if you dont use it the short !
Did you guys use a remote follow focus AF 100 / I know there's a equippement list :)

Could a Steadicam Pilot support a AF 100 ( with Mattebox and Remote FF ) in your honest opion ?

Thanks .

Everts

Yes, I agree that it is a choice of the director of photography resume the scenes in a certain way rather than another.
About AF100, we are discussing here in Italy in our forums www.videomakers.net on its validity, albeit with a lot of criticism against him by the codec.
It is no coincidence that you have used as a storage medium a Nano's Convergent...
