Re: A new DVX model?
Terry, are you using someone else's credit cards or something?? Man, you're on a tear! ;D
I had an ACL briefly. Very nice camera, *extremely* compact -- put a 200' mag on there and it's not much bigger than an A-minima, especially if you put something like a Switar 10mm lens on it. The motors can burn out though -- you have to make sure you have the heavy-duty motor. Mine was the original light-duty motor, and when you use it with 400' mags the motor didn't have enough torque so it'd burn out.
Eventually the motors and mags were redesigned (I think the camera body stayed the same) to accomodate 400' loads, which are of course the most common load size on 16mm.
The ACL is very quiet, and the quick-change snap-in magazines are just heavenly. Threading/loading isn't too bad either, because you do most of the work in daylight -- you only need to put the pancake in the mag and feed the film through a slot in the mag in the changing bag, once you close up the feed side you can do the rest of the loading in daylight, just like with daylight spools.
An S-16 mod on an ACL, by a qualified tech, might be expensive. Before you rule it out though, contact Les Bosher at www.lesbosher.co.uk. That guy works miracles on cameras, and he does it more affordably than anyone I've ever seen. Tell him my name, see if he remembers (he did the modification on my Konvas) and maybe he'll hook you up with a deal. His site asks for 550 pounds for the conversion, which is about $1,000... all in all, not a bad price considering it includes a complete servicing of the camera movement and mag conversion if necessary. I think he offers a 20% discount to members of the Topica Eclair list (or at least he used to).
If you got the HD motor with variable speeds and crystal at 24, that's a pretty good score for $900!
