A new DVX model?

Re: A new DVX model?

PAL has about 414,000 pixels per frame. 720P HD has about 921,600 pixels per frame, so you're talking about 2.25 times as much resolution.

And HD in 1080i has about 2,073,000 pixels per frame, so it's 5 times as many pixels per frame as PAL. PAL's nice, but it's certainly not HD.

Re: A new DVX model?

So, how does the resolution of a Super 8 frame compare?  :)

BTW, I took a stab at the 7008 on eBay. I was with it up to about $1,650 when I decided to let it go. It went for $2,062.

Re: A new DVX model?

if you take grain into account, resolution chain goes like this from lowest to highest..

8mm, SD (DVX), 16mm, HD, 35, Imax

Re: A new DVX model?

Mathematically, if you accept the idea that a full frame of 35mm scans at 12 million pixels (Kodak's ads make that claim) then you're looking at 4000 x 3000 to get the full resolution. A 35mm film frame is 24mm wide, so 4000 pixels in 24mm means that they're claiming film has a potential resolution of 167 pixels per millimeter. A Super8 frame is about 5.5 mm wide, so theoretically around 900 x 660 or so. However, when you take grain into account, Super8 looks more on par with VHS resolution -- DVX footage looks glass-smooth and razor sharp, and S8 can't compare (when transferred to video... direct projection of K40 reversal may change that perception).

Re: A new DVX model?

Hmmm...™ Maybe I should shoot more with my new R16...™  ;) ;D ;D ;D

Barry - I'm living out your early adult years in my early 40's. I'm having a mid-life film crisis.

Could a Super 16mm SR2 package be all that far away?!!! Uhhhh, yeah...™ I'm afraid it would be *far away*.

I told you I need an intervention...™ ::)

Re: A new DVX model?

Yeah, the price on that 7008 was my "intervention" -- no way am I sinking $2,000 into an S-8 camera right now! :)

R16's are very nice designs, but you've really got to test it out first before you trust it -- shoot some 64fps footage and then test the registration. Every R16 I had ended up eventually needing repairs for wobbly registration at high speeds. Graf was great at repairing them, but it got expensive after a while! :)

Skip the SR2 though and find an old Arri BL1 -- it'll cost less and shoot real 35mm, although it's not as quiet as the later models, and it still has the clumsy lens blimp issues. Or you could look for a Mitchell BNCR, that's probably the cheapest, quiet 35mm camera you're likely to find... HUGE though, definitely no hand-held work with one of those!

Lest you think I'm crazy, consider that it really doesn't cost that much more to shoot 35mm. Transfer costs are the same, stock costs a lot less per foot (thinking short ends at 12c/ft vs. new 16mm stock at 30c/ft) but you need 2.5x as much so it nets out the same... the only thing that *really* costs more is processing (10 cents a foot for both, but you process 2.5 times as much 35mm stock). For 11 minutes of footage it costs about $120 to process 35mm, whereas it costs about $50 to process 16mm, so the processing costs more but everything else is about the same, and then you're shooting REAL 35mm...

Re: A new DVX model?

For collecting, or for using? Those lunchbox cams always go for big bucks to collectors.

If you want a killer camera for a cheap price, it's hard to argue with the Konvas 2-M. 35mm, crystal-sync, can be converted to PL-mount, true reflex viewing, quick-change magazines (i.e., no lengthy threading in the field), indestructible, just an all around great camera. Noisy as anything I've ever heard, even louder than the R16, but that's about the only drawback. I've got a modified Konvas 1M that I had the lens port swapped out for M42 screwmount lenses (cheap 35mm optics, dontchaknow) and it's just a great, solid little camera.

Can't do dialogue with it easily, but then you couldn't with that R16 either (at least, not without a lot of hassle... I know, I did a series of campaign spots when all I had was an R16, and it was tough but we pulled it off). Actually with the Konvas it'd be really easy to do the Rodriguez technique, where you film the actors with their dialogue (also recording audio, camera noise and all), then you shut off the camera and have the actors go through the scene again and you just record the audio. Then you can bring both waveforms into a program called VocAlign and it'll automatically conform the waveforms and sync everything up for you. More work than using a silent camera, but the little testing I did with it seemed really promising.

Re: A new DVX model?

""From what I understand the XL2 will be more expensive than the XL1S and thus as a price persuasion it will have little effect on the DVX100A."

Well, uh,...Jan works for Panny so she is covering her ass. But dvx100a users are those who want the most bang for their buck under 5k, so the new Canon Cam will sock it right to Panny.

Untill they put out HDX100 in 60 days ;)

Re: A new DVX model?

With any luck, all such speculation can end in just a couple of days.

However, even if they announce something that is significantly better than the DVX (and I don't really see what they could do that would be that much better, other than HDV... maybe true variable frame rates? Built-in Magic Bullet effects? A 40:1 Fluorite zoom lens? The DVX isn't really lacking much, so what will Canon do that will be so much better?) , but even if they do announce something so much better, it may take months to reach store shelves, and then the "beta-testing" process begins... the XL1 had a rough few months in the early going, what with the lens that would focus itself even in manual focus, the burning eyepiece, the "banding" issue, etc.

But, I like to be prepared -- anybody know any good recipes for crow? ;D

Re: A new DVX model?

Yeah, but Super 8 just has a cool look. I plan to shoot a music video with it for that very reason. :)

I'm not abandoning the digital future...™ just having fun playing around with a unique look from our past.

btw, bought an intervalometer for the R16 today...™ ::)

Re: A new DVX model?

my buddy here bought 12 Russian Tank KSR 35mm off ebay a month or so ago for $12,000 I betcha you where one of the bidders on that auction Terry lol.

Re: A new DVX model?

ha ha.. Im serious.. you should see those old things with the Turret Mount. We picked up some mismatched Perf 35mm stock and ran around in the forest shooting.. Loud as hell but I swear we coulda used those cammeras as a hammer and an axe to cut down a few trees that got in our way. Noisy little buggers.

Re: A new DVX model?

I just checked someone selling a Ruskie Konvas (http://rafcamera.com/mc/konvas/2m/2m.htm) for 1700 hundred bucks, fully featured with 3 or 4 objectives and a lot of other goodies... Is it too crazy to use something like that in an actual production. I mean, I know they are freaking loud, but for a music video or something like that...

Re: A new DVX model?

I just bought an Eclair ACL with (2) 200 ft. mags, Angenieux 12-120mm lens, battery and charger...™ all in working condition for $900 !!!  :o

Re: A new DVX model?

Rafcamera is Rafael Pankratu, he's been selling Konvases for quite a while on ebay, he's a really nice guy and a reliable seller. $1700 sounds like a lot though for a 2M, I think they go on ebay for around $1000 or so.

The Konvases are very, very, very nice cameras for the money. Very, very, very loud though! :)
