A new DVX model?

Re: A new DVX model?

Various forms of HD are the way things are going, 24p or no 24p. Panasonic has already gotten the DV100 standard, which includes a 24p / HD subset, into the two big dogs of nonlinear editing, AVID and Final Cut Pro, and is only frozen out of Vegas (maybe not for long though) because Sony, the light of my youth, is not a fan of open style formats and is worried about its Digibeta and HDCAM locks.

It is only a matter of time before we see Panasonic coming out with a small format camcorder that brings HD features down to the DVX100A level (in addition, I expect they will reply to the disk formats that Sony and Hitachi are pushing, since their big Final Cut Pro push is going on. Better than half the FCP houses I know started to switch to Panasonic when the Pro50 and Pro100 codecs went into FCP).

Still, I am buying four more DVX100A for the simple reason they are what is here now that does the job at that price range and feature set. If I wait for some new phantom Panny product, I will always be waiting. Since I am working under a progressive purchase system (a few cameras a year) then there will always be time to buy into the new technology when it comes.

I've just been converted and now you tell me that there is a new god coming to town. What is a poor neophyte to do?

Re: A new DVX model?

You can try out for the New Danger Bay tv show.

Determine when you need to buy, and buy then. If you need something now, get it now, like Slapdragon -- he's getting four more.

But if you don't need it now, then what would it hurt to wait? Electronics is a rapidly-changing business, cameras are changing almost as fast as computers (unless, of course, you're Canon...) (cheap shot, I know). There will probably be high-def models on the shelves in 2005.

In the meantime, if you're shooting weddings or commercials or whatnot, you can make a lot of money with a DVX between now and then.

So, if you need it now, get it now (like a car, it'll still serve you for a long time to come even when newer and better models have come out). But if you don't NEED it now, wait as long as you can.

Re: A new DVX model?

it is a tool. use it because you need it. all this talk of how it's going to improve is all rubbish talk... because 10 years from now, it will be!
if you can, buy the original DVX even! the dvxA isnt all it's made up to be... well it is... but if you're poor then whats it matter?

Re: A new DVX model?

8 days. I kind of expect a GL3 more than an XL2, but we'll find out if there's any announcement in just over a week...

Re: A new DVX model?

If nothing else, the announcement of an XL2 (supermightywonderkickyourDVXsassoutofthesolarsystem24pHD<$3000) will at least stop the rumor mongering. ::)

Re: A new DVX model?

No, it'll only redirect it.

"Oh yeah? Well, when the DVX200 comes out it'll blah blah blah..."

But yes, it should silence the Canon rumors for a while...

Re: A new DVX model?

Well, true. But the 100A isn't even a year old. If the DVX200 rumors are still flying around in 2008 . . .

Re: A new DVX model?

Screw Canon... I'm all about Beaulieu!

Yeah, that's right... the future is 8mm wide.

Dammit, Barry you gotta save me from myself. In the last three weeks I've spent $3,000 on e-Bay buying multiple Beaulieu Super8 cameras.

I need an intervention! :'(

Re: A new DVX model?

I'll help you out, Terry -- just send me all your credit cards. I'll keep 'em nice and safe for you. ;D

Re: A new DVX model?

Thanks, David! ;)

Yeah... I feel like such a freak, but I gotta feed my "Super8 jones".

I do have a few ideas for actually using them on a production and hopefully I can sell some on e-Bay and recoup some of my expense.

I can't believe its taken me this long to check out e-Bay's movie equipment, but now I'm hooked. :-/

Re: A new DVX model?

Terry, Terry, Terry... it would be hard for me to save you from that affliction, as I have suffered it myself. I've probably had six R-16's over the years.

If you want to be saved from your affliction, shoot a roll of Pro8mm film. After you get the bill, and see what a measly job of transfer they do (if your experience parallels mine), you'll go back to the DVX in no time! :)

No, seriously, Beaulieus are the gold standard of Super 8 cam's. Once you get your hands on a 7008 it will be hard to go back. If the 7008 was silent, I might have had a hard time buying into the whole video thing, but that camera noise factor gets really limiting.

And, as you say, just as ebay is a great place to BUY, it's also an excellent place to SELL... ;D

Re: A new DVX model?

Speaking of the 7008...™ I saw this on e-bay http://tinyurl.com/yu85j

Wasn't there someone here on DVXuser.com who shot the Nike "Revolution" commercial years ago? The ad says this was the actual Beaulieu Super8 camera they used for that spot. This seller also lists their DVX100 for sale.

BTW, who would you recommend for film transfer? I know Pro8mm is expensive, but hear they do a good job...™ true?

...™ ::)

Re: A new DVX model?

TERRY!!!!  What have you done?!!?  :o

You have awakened the beast, that which craves Super 8 cameras.  If I end up buying this thing, I shall have to have a stern word with you.   ;D

(but for now it's in my "watch list").  Man, a 7008 with the 6-90 lens... it never got any better than that...

Re: A new DVX model?

I'm just glad to see this camera *might* remain in the DVXuser family.  ;)

Besides being a sweet camera it has some unique historical significance.
... another way to justify your bidding. :)

Re: A new DVX model?

Oh, yeah, you asked about Pro8mm transfers... in my very brief experience with them, I found nearly every aspect of transacting with them to be unsatisfying. Their prices are outrageous, and their quality, in my opinion, was much below what someplace like Yale would deliver. Pro8mm seems to actually want to degrade the quality of the footage! That's just the way it seemed to me, almost as if their philosophy was "if you wanted it to look good, you'd have shot 16mm, but since you shot Pro8, you must want it to look grainy and grungy"...

I didn't like anything they did, and I sure didn't like paying their rates for it. It's much less expensive to shoot 16mm than it is to go with those guys.

If I was shooting S-8, I'd go with a roll of K40 + processing from Kodak, $13.31 (minus Film Arts or IFP discount, of course) and then send it to moviestuff.tv or to TFGTransfers.com for transfer. I had some stuff transferred by Roger at moviestuff and it looked better than the Rank at Pro8mm. MovieStuff only charges $20 per roll, whereas other places charge $250/hr.

Years ago I had something transferred by a place that was called something like "dallas digital transfers" or something -- they did a great job, at an affordable rate. I've also heard good things about cinepost in Atlanta. I've used Yale for 16mm & 35mm stuff, but haven't used 'em for S-8, but they have quite a reputation in the S-8 world.

Transfers are expensive though. If you intend to be doing a lot of S-8 work, it might be cheaper to buy a sync telecine projector, or one of the WorkPrinters, and do it yourself.

Hmmm... now you've got me thinking... I went back to the MovieStuff page and saw that he does 16mm for $20 per 100 ft. I've been meaning to shoot a "strobe test" by strapping the DVX to a 16mm camera and shoot the same subject, side-by-side, waving the camera around, all that stuff, just to show that the DVX absolutely renders motion identically to film (or, if the test disproves that theory, well, we'd have proof then as well). But most transfer places have a $100 minimum or so, and it just wasn't worth it to me to spend that kind of coin to prove what I already know. But $20... that might be worth it, just to KNOW...

Re: A new DVX model?

Thanks for the info on processing and transfer. I have a few prepaid rolls of Kodachrome (new) that I plan to test my cameras with.

Actually, I still have several rolls of Super8 film left from years ago when I originally bought my first Beaulieus. I still have 4 or 5 rolls of sound film... not that I would ever use it that way.
