A lot of progress hacking the NX500/NX1 (like the GH2)

I can't find anything here on it, but they've made a lot progress hacking the NX500 and NX1.
It appears the possibilities are endless because the opportunities are Linux based.
Details over at dpreview and samsung forum

As far as I know no one's actually found a way to truly hack the OS.

Samsung had released a Developer's Kit a while back, and everyone seems to be focusing on that as a possible doorway in to higher functions, but so far nothing.

While RAW is always wonderful - the NX1 (or NX500) will benefit most from simply having their max bit-rate of 80mbps either doubled or tripled. That will eliminate all the IQ problems it has.

If RAW ever could be pulled out of the NX1 then holy hell...that would be an INSANE camera for $1,200.
The user base of these cameras is so tiny compared to the likes of Canon or Nikon or Panasonic that unfortunately I have doubts that the NX hack will ever really produce anything.

The SDK was only for camera control - Samsung expected people would make time-lapse apps, stuff like that.

The recording time limit and the "check for lens" can both be bypassed now, the hacks work with the developer/debug mode of the camera so not so much a real hack as getting into the dev section. People reporting overheating or shutdowns at 75 mins or so that corrupt the file.

People have ID'd areas of the code that deal with bitrate, so who knows. One hacker says it's doable.

The 6k and 240 FPS abilities come from an early & infamous interview with a high-end (vp level or something?) Samsung sales rep who claimed the sensor was capable of that stuff and the they didn't include 240 fps in the final release because "who would need that??". So for all we know, that guy had his lines a little crossed.

Wish someone could track down one of the actual engineers - got any friends in Korea??

The NX1 and NX500 use a Linux OS. It looks like they put scripts on an SD card that can adjust settings after boot-up. This way they can add 160mb bitrate (that's for h.265!) for video and it makes the update every time the camera is turned on.
They are working on a GUI too.

The NX1 can shoot 28MP images at 15 FPS, so 6K may be possible. They've found all kinds of cool things in the past couple days.

Thanks for posting. Looks like there is not much difference for all of the hassle. There is probably more of an improvement with the NX500 given it is a lower priced camera. 5D RAW was miles ahead of the internal recording and worth the hoop jumpin'. This not so much.

Really need something more difficult like running water or fire and smoke, high amount of motion, etc.

They are making some great progress. Currently they are trying to limit the NR which kills detail at high ISOs and add 120 FPS or possibly 2.5K at 60 FPS. There is so much potential with the inexpensive NX500 and NX1.

Ha! Yes..I remember that weird quote. The Samsung ride has been strange indeed....
