7D -Which Lens?

I've been trying to learn more about the 7D that I recently purchased through these forums as well as other websites. I still have my 7D in the box, yet to be open so I still have an option to return it with no restocking fee.

My questions are:

Seems like everyone is saying that it's a better idea to buy the body only instead of paying $200 for the kit that comes with the 7D.
Canon 28-135mm IS zoom lens

** Is this lens really THAT bad? Should I return the combo pack I bought and just get the body only?

** (if i was to keep the kit) What would this lens be best used for?

** If I only had $1500 to spend on some new lenses to start me off with to do some short films, documentaries, and random photography, what would you recommend I should look into first?

Thanks for ANY information I can get about this.

Oh, come on, not even a peek?

Depends on the use you have planned. Barry Green says, "Video is the great equalizer." For stills, the kit lens will be outgrown in a month.

Outdoor video mainly.

1. Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS
2. Canon 50mm f/1.4

The kit lens is okay but I outgrew it a month. Anything with variable aperture is simply not useable for my style of shooting. Get the body only and put a few hundred toward the Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC. just my 2.

my favorites:

Tokina 11-16
Tamron 17-50 VC
Canon 50 1.8 (The 1.4 is built better but if you NEED to save a couple hundred it works just fine.)

Hey thanx for all the tips guys!! There's so much out there bout these cameras to learn about!! I will look into all of the ones that were suggested.

Can someone tell me if these are good deals? These are some used (mint condition) lenses I've found.

FS: Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens Canon mount - $300

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens for Canon - $325

EF-S 55-250 Zoom + Filters - $185 (two Tiffen filters)

So I went to Best Buy to return my 7D so that I can get the body only for $1599. The sales rep asked me to wait a minute so they can get approval for the return. Five minutes later the manager came out and said he'll price match it and I can even keep the lens kit. So, I got myself the 7D with the lens for only $1599. Guess I'm going to HAVE to outgrow this lens as you guys mentioned lol

thanx for that link! I glanced thru it wee hours in the morning yesterday and it looked very informative and helpful. I will do some reading this weekend.

pardon my ignorance, what is variable aperture?

For a do it all lens that is pretty darn good take a look at the Canon 24-105 4L its not the fastest, but you would have enough money left to get a prime or two.

This is a very nice lens, but if you never plan to go full frame, it may not be the best choice as it is not really wide enough for APS-C

I agree but for run and gun doc work it is pretty durn good! And that is why I am excited to get my Tokina on Tuesday!
