7d or wait for Sony? Are they joining the game on 10/20/09?

Wait a second, check that, I think this is the "big announcement" - Sony PMW-350K:

That looks like a photoshop. 350k sounds like a disc-based name, like the 330, 335, and 355. They already have a 355 anyway.

3/4" chip? There's no lenses. Not gonna happen.

My bet stays firmly on an EX5. Might be the same type of camera they photoshopped here, but using XDCAM-EX it'd be named EX5...

Exactly, but then nobody expected Sony to come out with 1/2" cameras for the same reason. No lenses. (food for thought).

btw, what is 3/4 format?

It didn't matter for the EX1 because it had a fixed lens. For the EX3, Sony could debut a series of lenses. Actually, you could use lenses designed for 2/3" on a 1/2" chip, since the image circle would provide full coverage. That's not the case for 3/4".

It doesn't exist. It's not a standard. Until a camera is actually released with such chips, it doesn't exist.

OK, 3/4" is larger than 2/3", which is the standard for high-end HD camcorders. So 3/4" chips would be unprecedented in a few ways...

Best advice ever for so many reasons.

Barry my apologies I got my fractions wrong it should read 2/3" chipset. The EX-7 pictured is a concept camcorder I made up in Photoshop last April but tomorrow you will see the PMW-350K/L one is with lens and one is body only.

The EX-1R which I find very strange is the upgrade to the EX-1 now many people including myself bought the EX-3 thinking that was the upgrade to the EX-1, apparently Sony see them a 2 separate camcorders, remember the EX-1R as far as I am aware is a fixed lens camcorder. Philip Bloom was the 1st to break the news on the EX-1R.

This is not a joke...tomorrow you will get pictures of this camcorder and 2 others one being the EX-1R the other is a small secret.

Small secret aye? Come on Sony DSLR w/video . I've got a pile of Sony lenses I'd love to hold onto if I don't have to switch to Canon...

If the EX1-R has much better low light than the current EX1 and much lower noise, I'm all over it. As much as the EX1 was great, it looked like crap when you turned up the gain. I preferred the HMC150 noise pattern much more.

I think all-in-one's are dead - dying anyway.

The reality of buying quality lenses and simply replacing your recording body every few years is simply too compelling for me to ever lay down a large sum of money on an all-in-one again.

So what do you intend filming with ?

I think films upto about £20K are going to be made with DSLR's - above that your looking at a RED, above £1M your more than likely back to film.

Of course were in a period of transition which is likely to take 2 or three years.

I'll know, for sure, in about three days after I've tested my 7D with a nice fast lens :-)

DSLRs are a phase and a pain in the butt to edit, sound is poor the only positive part of a DSLR is the picture and the cost. If you intend making indie type films for uTube with some music the DSLR is fine but for serious work you can't yet beat a decent camcorder. I also own a 5DMk11 and have tinkered with it's HD capabilities but if you gave me a choice between a DSLR or a Camcorder...the camcorder wins hands down.

Except that the picture also sucks, technically, so cost, shallow DOF, and interchangeable lenses are the main benefits of DSLRs. Everything else is a big step backwards from the conventional video camera.

Agreed absolutely. I've got a 7D, a GH1, an HPX170, HMC150, and HMC40. No question whatsoever that the camcorders deliver better pictures, more reliably, and easier, than the DSLRs. There is a certain magic the DSLRs can deliver, but it's all smoke and mirrors and when it fails, it fails horrifically... the camcorders don't fail.

You must be excited for this one then huh? I agree with the logic that WHERE it is on Sony's website hints at what it will be. I also agree that it is "progressive" EX"something-new".
