7d or wait for Sony? Are they joining the game on 10/20/09?

It's getting interesting. Sure it's gonna be EX1/EX3 successor - it's been hard to buy these cameras for some time (B&H has them backordered... in Poland, where I live, dealers are selling them out). Another reason to suspend the purchase is Oct 30th Red's announcement (even though all they promised is another schedule). Who knows - the (already postponed) Scarlet might be coming up pretty soon...

You could always use the GH1, which has far less nasty-looking aliasing.

A personal word to the wise. Having owned both a 5D with it's nasty aliasing and a GH1, I'd take aliasing any day of the GH1's Achilles heels - namely low bit rate and mud. Both cameras have their fault(s) but in my view the GH1's faults are of more concern. You may want to read up on the GH1 before you choose to consider it as an option to the 7D / Sony choice.

It looks like Sony will announce a new camera in the EX range, but I doubt that because the rumour mill has been very quiet on new Sony cameras, which considering big camera launches these days is a little strange. So maybe it's something of less significance that nobody really cares about enough to leak.

or maybe sony is threatening to murder the families of anybody who dears leak their release info...those crafty japanese...

Well the aliasing is in every frame on 5D / 7D no matter what you do as a operator but so far I've had to go really out of my way to get 'mud' on GH1 - so far out of my way that the part would have been unusable anyway. As an example I had not one instance of 'mud' on this entire job for Sony Music except one time when I forgot to shut off recording and was moving and readjusting the tripod balance for next take. It's in broadcast right now here in Sweden.

I own both the 5D and GH1 at this present moment, and it's well known from the GH1 forum which I prefer so I won't go too deeply into that, but I will point out that I don't think aliasing is a problem in every frame. Not at all. What is a problem is that the GH1 has a lower bit rate in every frame, and overall image quality is poorer due to the smaller sensor. The 5D is capable of a nicer image, and anybody who can't accept that fact is either biased due to their purchasing decision or has not used a 5D and GH1 at the same time. Yes - I feel that strongly about the issue.

Exactly, it isn't a deal breaking problem on the 7D or 5D. It's the sound on a proud GH1 (rightly proud, maybe) justifying his purchase and I don't see what relevance it has to Sony either!

Thanks so much for the input guys. After reading it, I think that, a "dream come true" for all of us would be....just to have Sony in the game in the DSLR market, or at least the sub-$3000 HDcam interchangeable lens market....that way we can all complain about how dumb Sony is too. :) lol

I see aliasing in major tv shows and commercials all the time and never hear people complain, so I would never call it a deal-breaker. Everyone hear using these cameras is more than likely not seeing a big distribution deal. They'll play in festivals and, the web, and on TV, and the quality is more than acceptable for all of these applications. And if you are lucky enough to get an art house run, you're appealing to a group of people who embrace the indie feel to begin with. I've seen the 5d2 and gh1 used as supplementary cams on large scale commercials and now the 7d is getting some play too, so I personally think you can't go wrong with a 7d or if you decide to wait.

I am on my iPhone, so I apologize in advance for typos.

I doubted that something on the lines of a larger sensor will come that soon from either Sony or Panasonic. They have much more expensive cameras to worry about it. They can't cannibalize their own market.

When Scarlet/Epic is largely available and reliable (and that's anybody guess) the situation will be different and the "big" guys will have to respond which has been their pattern so far.

But I would love to be surprised...

At the last Vegas user meeting in DC, the Sony rep stated they are building on the EX camera line and hope to have something out on or before NAB 2010. That is all he said, no specifics other than that. It would make sense to announce now and deliver sometime on or before next April. I doubt it will be a direct competitor the the 7D. But I could be wrong.

Spend money on the 7d this weekend or wait for this announcement?

I've been watching the issues with this camera very closely. (Aliasing seems to be a BIG one.) I received this from Sony today. (email)

"Something BIG is coming on 10/20/09.
Mark your calendar for 2:00pm (EDT) on Tuesday,
October 20, 2009 or you will miss this really BIG,
industry-shaking, groundbreaking announcement."

It also included this:

COULD IT BE RAW VIDEO with a lens mount? (Maybe they have footage of big foot with Santa Claus?)

Less than 5,000? EX? (OK...less than 10,000?)

btw, tried to register and their captcha system is working properly (I matched the letters, but their system said I didn't).

The 5D is capable of a nicer image
It better be, since it costs 3x as much. Wouldn't you feel silly if you bought a 5D (MSRP $2699, body-only) and it DIDN'T have a better image than an (approx. $800 body-only) GH1? I sure would...

Anyway, none of this aliasing or 5D or GH1 stuff has any business in this thread.

Back to the OP's question -- Sony's got an announcement, and I think Canon's got a launch of a new product coming on the 20th as well. If you don't need something today, just wait as long as you can. When you do need something (as in, you can't wait any longer, you must buy something now) then buy the best that's available at that time.

So will this new sony camera be able to use the canon lenses I've purchased?
Not if it uses the Sony Alpha mount (which is what is found on their DSLRs). But I doubt that it's a video DSLR; an EX series traditional camcorder sounds more likely.

All this DSLR talk about the Sony announcement is probably misplaced. The Sony announcement for 10/20/2009 is taking place on their XDCAM EX site, and all this talk of "something big" seems to imply that they'll be adding something "big" to their lineup. A real shoulder-mount EX5 would be my guess. I mean, the teaser banner says "We brought you EX1... then EX3... what can we be up to now?" Sure seems like EX5 would be the obvious follow-up...

I'm guessing the other way, actually. Ex3 already has interchangeable lenses and pops up on your shoulder...it might be called EX5, but I doubt they'll want to just bulk it up. Maybe they'll bring some more features down from the Cinealta line and drop all the prices? They've become more price-conscious over the last year so I'm not expecting any major technological innovations.

Oh well, we'll find out Tuesday. I see they're doing 0% 15-month lease financing on their website. Might be a winner for someone.
