7d or wait for Sony? Are they joining the game on 10/20/09?

Spend money on the 7d this weekend or wait for this announcement?

I've been watching the issues with this camera very closely. (Aliasing seems to be a BIG one.) I received this from Sony today. (email)

"Something BIG is coming on 10/20/09.
Mark your calendar for 2:00pm (EDT) on Tuesday,
October 20, 2009 or you will miss this really BIG,
industry-shaking, groundbreaking announcement."

It also included this:

COULD IT BE RAW VIDEO with a lens mount? (Maybe they have footage of big foot with Santa Claus?)

Less than 5,000? EX? (OK...less than 10,000?)

Seems like they are emphasizing the "BIG"... as in... not a Big announcement...

But, something Large. Like a big screen, or ultra high rez, or something along those lines perhaps.

Thanks Zim. I was watching closely on the D3s also...(D300s), ....obviously 7d is the cheapest of the prior mentioned. Having said that...This aliasing thing looks TROUBLING. Also....is Sony trying to beat RED CAMERA to the punch? They have their "Big Announchment" ...schedule for Scarlet. Who knows?

I wrapped a "proof of concept shoot" this past Thursday....I am shooting a feature length film this winter. Will be done shooting this Spring. This means that my schedule for making a decision is coming right up. I held on to my D90, knowing that BIG improvments were on the horizon. I've got to full the trigger soon though.

How scared should I be of the 7d aliasing? How good is Sony's track record?

Sony did replace some of their SLR cameras recently except for their A900 so perhaps a replacement with HD video using the XDCAM codec.
It could also be a portable version of the EX1 to compete against the Panasonic HMC40 and the JVC HM100.

WOW! It would be nice to have another player in the game. Maybe Sony's presence in the game would push everyone else a little bit more. Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, Pentax...if nothing else....maybe they can get it right.

I decided to post this here, because the 7d was my "hope". I'm not saying it's done...I'm not saying I won't continue to shoot. (I will move every project I am working on forward...I'm not WAITING for ANY camera.) I'm also not saying that I won't end up buying a 7d in the VERY near future.

I just thought others might like to know....I'd also like to know what you all think? Would you dare shoot a feature length film (very dark footage, ....low light)??.....on a 7d?

The aliasing issue hasn't bothered the vast majority of 7D owners, and there are ways around it.

You could always use the GH1, which has far less nasty-looking aliasing.

I got the same email Only a few days away

an EX5 is in the works. I was told this a few months ago by Sony NZ. However, im pretty sure they said next year so not sure what this announcement is. I will be at the Sony NZ announcement evening anyway..

I was going to pick up a 7D this week but maybe i'll wait a little bit.. im in no rush.

never once liked any of the sony's I have owned... But I do love my 7D... but it will be nice to see some new competition enter the game cuase that only means they will battle restlessly to out do each other... and thats a win win for us consumers...

sorry for my cynicism, but doesn't every company say they are gonna have something earth shattering with these announcements? *cough* *cough* canon *cough* better pdf support...

we'll see...

i just dont get why they dont make a APC sized 1080p sensor and just put HDV or High quality AVChd on it... forget raw, just a decent recording codec..... hell make it have the SONY mount, or a Nikon F mount... or a EF mount... or godforbid a PL mount....

The XLh1 looks AMAZING for HDV..... that codec can be well implemented....

I am predicting something quite dull like a shoulder-mount "EX3". But never let the facts stand in the way of a good story.

Hmm...interesting. I need one "regular" video camcorder so hopefully sony or canon comes out with something comparable/better than the HMC150 soon :).
