7D Autofocus in Video Mode?

Hi,

is there a possibility or system available so that it would be possible to shoot andthe focus would adjust automatically?

It would be a dream for DSLR :=)

The issue is with the lens; the lens would need to be designed for continuous autofocus. None of the Canon lenses, or ... well, really, practically no SLR lens, is made to do that.

It's possible; you can get video-style autofocus on the GH1 and GH2, but really only with one particular lens (the "HD Video Optimized" 14-140 zoom).

hi,

i heard that nikon has a cheap mofel with auto focus for video mode. I could use then my rig and steady that I have. Canon lense it will not work.

But would not be a alternative?

What will you be shooting? What kinds of video are you looking to produce?

Because if you need to heavily rely on auto-focus, then a DSLR probably isn't the right way to go.

Hi,

at the moment I'm producing music videos.

I have:

7D
17-55mm 2.8
50mm
Shoulder Rig + Follow Focus + Mattebox
Flycam 3000

Sometimes is difficult to adjust the focus and if the object is moving or I with a dolly or steady than is difficult.

I'm searching a way to try to have allways or most of the time a sharp pic.

I thing I have following solutions:

- Buy another cam with auto focus and use it on difficult situations
or
- Buy a big field monitor with HD resolution and use the follow focus

I really don't know what's the best way.

What do the other guys here to have allways a sharp footage :) using /D or a DSLR without C-AF?

Even if you would find a lens that can focus continiously, you will still have the focus seeking all the time, which needs to be edited out. Also, how does your lens know on what part of your frame you want to focus?

I also shoot with a 7D and follow focus and on the follow focus ring I marked the distances in meters; 0,5, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 meter, and I set my light and aperture so that I have about 2 meters depth of focus, then I adjust my follow focus all the time by guessing the distance between camera and subject that I want to be in focus. If your DOF is quite large, this works fine. Guessing the distance properly is a matter of training yourself.

Another solution is getting a Marshall LCD monitor with focus assist. The monitor is small and not too heavy and has a peaking filter that generates colors to indicate what is in focus and what isn't. This works pretty well.

Or get a cheap large HD monitor like you write, the only problem is... where are you going to put that or do you want to carry it around?

Hi,

two questions:

1) What you mean with "I have about 2 meters depth of focus,"

2) Which Marshal Monitor would you suggest?

1) AKA Depth of Field, correct me if I'm wrong. For example, if everything between 1 to 3 meter from camera is in focus, you have a depth of focus of 2 meter.
I often use this online calculator:
http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

2) Marshall V-LCD70P-HDMI, I think this is now their only monitor with both HDMI and focus assist, but they will come with another smaller model soon, I think it will be 5 inch.

I have a handheld rig with the 7D, follow focus and Marshall LCD and it's quite heavy to carry around especially for longer periods of time, I do it but I sweat like a pig especially when the set is hot, like in summer. I am now trying to use some kind of support like the DV tec junior rig.

The specs look good, it has higher resolution than the Marshall, new price is $1049, if you can get it new for $900 it's a good deal, if it's a used one than $900 is too much. Weight (lbs): 1.2, the Marshall is 1.9 lbs, so the Ikan has better specs. First time I read about this Ikan LCD.
