7D and Adobe Premiere CS4 workflow in detail

I´ve got the best results with photo-jpeg/mov at 75% so far. Same quality as neo - editing speed is on par too. With DNxHD i always get a slight gamma shift.

The files play smoothly in and out of Premiere, even when the time line looks like it needs to be rendered. With DNxHD I have realtime playback.

interesting thread, im also seeking the best workflow though my computer may well be under powered for smooth editing (core 2 duo, 2.53ghz, 4gb ram but vista 32 bit).
I've tried just about all the mpeg streamline workflows suggested here with 720 50p footage from T2i & I've found that Uwe's way using photo jpeg gives me the smoothest playback - its not buttery smooth but better than dnxhd & doesnt suffer so much from the gamma 'lightening' i get from dnxhd in .mov
Lucas 7d - I am curious to know what settings you use both for prem cs4 timeline sequence & also your render settings - I have tried a few render settings but it takes an age to render & doesnt really help with smooth playback on the timeline?
Any pointers would be very gratefully received. I did try the cineform neo trial with my hmc151 avchd footage a while back but gave up on it as could not get that to play back as smooth as main concept dvcprohd transcoder. Just looking for a way to edit on my limited laptop resources though im aware this may not be possible - fingers crossed
Cheers

edit - tried using photo jpeg in an avi wrapper as premiere normaly prefers avi to mov but it just makes premiere crash when i try to import - i can play the file fine on media player classic but no play with premiere - anyone know why?

Well i use a quad core and 4 gig ram and when i render, my processors run at around 90%. The playback isnt super smooth but it seems to be better than importing H.264. Once I apply any little setting to the footage I have to render work area because playback would be laggy and choppy. Rendering takes time and I dont really see any way to do it differently but than again im no pro to this converting method. I'm sure you can get smooth playback if you buy a great video card but i rather wait than spend that type of $$$.

alright so im doing all the steps but when i go to import into premiere on my imac it says codec missing or unavailible?

anyone have any solutions.

im shooting 60p. what preset should i use in premiere??? the footage is choppy at 100% but it looks great when i have it rendered at 50%.... but i need it at 100% speed.

sorry im new to the 7d stuff. thanks in advance!

thanks for the feedback lucas7d - yeah im waiting for i7 to come down in price, with cuda & cs5 im sure things will run a lot smoother - in the mean time im happy using the photo jpeg transcode, discovered that avg anti virus was slowing my system down, with that disabled im now getting pretty much smooth playback on the timeline

Recently bought the 550D and have been looking everywhere for a good PC workflough. Only have a dual core laptop and the files wont play back smooth natively.

Im definately not an expert on codecs, but I have tried some different ones now, photoJPEG as described above and Avid DNxHD 10bit. I did some 100% comparisons both before and after grading and my conclusion is that FotoJPEG does look very jpeg-blocky in a lot of parts, especially when graded. Avids look much better but with a slight gamma shift and much bigger filesize... FotoJPEG plays back best in premiere cs4. But with vegas the difference i smaller and I can play back both formats pretty good.

The blacks also get a bit more crushed with fotoJPEG, there seems to be more detail left with Avids coded.... I think i will use Avid from now when i need the best possible quality.

Just thought I share what i discovered :) good luck!

To keep file sizes down i do a rough cut with the native files, no transitions or effects, render it out to DNxHD then bring that back into Premiere and colour it/cut it up more.

I just want to make sure I'm clear... this method is instead of using neoscene... but is neoscene still considered the "best" option if you are willing to pay the $$$?

I haven't read the whole thread however, I bought NEOSCENE from videoguys.com for $99.00 and saved a lot of money. I love it for my 7d footage and I like that fact that its an available codec in my Adobe Media Encoder now that its installed.

I thin it is the best option yes, download the trial of Neoscene if you want to compare. The filesizes with neo dont get any bigger than the original files, it´s very fast to play back and quality is great for grading. I think I have to buy it later, but for now Avids codecs will have to work...

I got neoscene from the Videoguys for $89. Just use the discount code "REGTEN" to get the ten bucks off. Don't know how long it would last though.

download mpegstreamclip
download dnxhd codec
convert clips with mpegstreamclip to mov dnxhd codec 1080p 23.97 10bit or 720p 59.97 10bit
open converted files in cs4
all 60p interpret footage to 23.97

Be aware that your gamma may (will) shift converting 7D H-264 mov. files via DNxHD. The shift is quite dramatic with color and contrast. I have been trying to match to the camera originals. Close but no cigar. Doesn't work for me. I'd rather live with 30x bigger uncompressed Quicktime files till the get it right. Hey it's only HD space which is cheap and can be recycled so what's the big deal. Uncompressed conversions are exact clones of what came out of the camera.
I'm downloading Neoscene next to give it a go. Maybe perfect, don't know yet.

On the 12th of April Adobe will announce and/or release their CS5 suite, which will render this thread moot. Provided that you have a supported NVidia card (GTX285, 470, 480 or Quadro FX 3800/4800/5800). These are the cards that support the Mercury playback engine.

It looks like it will play back the native H.264 files like they were standard def DV files.

That's what I'm waiting for.
What are you eating, looks pretty good.

I have just bought one recently, but it captures videos in H.264/MOV format, which is not a workable format in my editing software Magix Edit Pro 14.

Cineform Neoscene $129,so i gave it up.

At last,i found this guide by google:
www.pavtube.com/guide/convert-hd-footages-to-edit-in-magi...

I downloaded a demo version and found it was definitly worth buying. I suggest u try it.It supports HD video formats from HD camcorders(JVC, Sony, Panasonic, and Cannon...), TiVo DVRs and DVs.
