7D 7D, 5D vs. new SONY NEX VG1O ??

Looks like there just may be a little good, healthy, competition in shooting HD video between the Canon 7D or 5D and this new Sony NEX VG10 Camcorder which will be released in 1-1/2 months, this September.

The biggest problem with the new Sony, in my book, is that fact that it is "locked" in at 60i. I wonder why Sony gave it only that option with no choice to go with progressive?

It is also not clear what the sensor size of the new Sony is either.

It will be interesting to see if the new Sony NEX VG10 steals away some of the potential video shooters out there that are currently using the Canon 7Ds and 5Ds.

For cinema work...not likely. But for those others who just want to point and shoot....maybe. From what it looks like it's really just a DSLR in a camcorder body.....kind of like the reversal of a trend.

I wouldn't count it out- looks quite promising and signals the end of Canon's total dominance in this market segment. Though of course less choice in optics right out of the box compared to Canon and no true 24p count against the Sony...

The Camera does not Record 24fps. only 60 and 50...

micro 4/3 sensor no xlr imput.. stick with Canon, zoom, zeiss.. :-) ..

Panasonic's new camera yes but thats 10k

The GH1 leaves you ergonomically cold for video? Versus a 7D? Really? I find that its ergonomics are where it shines pretty brightly, so -- odd. But, yes, agreed on the AF100, I think that's gonna be the bomb diggity.

Its a good start for Sony and good for the rest of us. Someone had to jump in first.
Now Panasonic, Canon and (Red?) can improve on what the NEX VG10 has to offer.

Yeah it's not to say I personally find the 7D that ergonomically pleasing for video either. Just that in general the Canon DSLRs are by far the hottest thing going in this interchaneable video camera/HDSLR segment. But this Sony and the AF100 will shake that grip big time. Competition is good for all of us... especially me. :bath:

bomb diggity
adj. meaning amazing, fantastic, marvelous.. etc.
[syn. awesomeness in its purest form]
"how bomb diggity!" she said

I honestly dont think anyone with any video experience would even consider this silly gimmick. What good is a large sensori and intchangeable lenses when it shoots interlaced video and no xlr inputs. The only thing this cam has going for it is the two hot shoes. And their probably cold. lol

While I don't disagree, I can't help but think that three years ago, most DVXUsers would have sold their grandmothers for this thing...

Someone who:
- buys the PAL version (which shoots perfect 25p).
- records dual system anyway (send timecode to the VG10 as analog audio - Avid autodetects and autosyncs to your TC recorder's files - sound devices 702T in my case)... hang on, this is the "DSLR in Motion" forum section and you're complaining about lack of XLRs?

Also, bear in mind that you could buy a Ki Pro or whatever for the price difference between this and the AF100.

That said, I'll probably wait for version 2 - or the first cheap cam that fixes any remaining aliasing issues and gets since simple sync of genlock and lens for stereo shooting :)

If you alraedy have avid, and a seperate recorder, then the issues aren't as bad. But for us In the USA, This camera makes absolutly no sense. and for 2,000, makes even less sense.

As far as bringing up the XLRinputs in the Dslr section, the camera were spaeking about isn't a dslr. It's considered a video camera, and as I recall the Op was comparing it to the 7d.

It seems you have the necessary tools to make this cam workable for you, go ahaed and buy one, let us know how it goes. If you say its a great cam, I will take your word for it while waiting for my Af100

The PAL version makes "absolutely no sense" in the USA?

Here's what you need to do to make good 24fps stuff in the good ol' USA with your PAL VG10:

1. shoot at 1/60 shutter not 1/50 default (to avoid flicker)

2. use Cinema Tools to gearshift that stuff down 4% so it becomes 24 or 23.98. Not a re-render, no blending frames, no 3:2 removal. Just a simple gearshift.

Or if you want to, use Compressor in the ingest stage - gearshift down 4% and convert to ProRes at the same time. Done.

But again, let's get some raw footage links. No point if there is a lot of aliasing.

Yeah, dual system sound is a slight pain but I shoot dual system anyway with Red, so it this would slot right in as B-cam. At the moment I use GH1 or HV20(!) as B-cam - this would only make sense if the quality is better, of course!

Again, I'll wait to see if they have a cheap prosumer version with some kind of genlock or LANC / lens control sync for 3D though. The cam is so small and light, it'd be great for 3D!

I still want to see what Canon does next though since there is already that nice Viewfactor follow focus for their system, which would solve the lens control portion of my 3D problems. And Red will theoretically fully solve the lens control and sensor sync issues with Scarlet.

I understand the work flow, I just feel it makes more sense to spend less money and get the t2i or 7d. It has better options, more lenses to choose from and it's not Sony. which i have had terrible luck with. But then again I have never had the oportunity to use any of their pro cams.
