C100: 7 Weeks to NAB - Anyone hearing anything besides conjecture about a C100 MKIII?

sigh. These baby-faced guys who have been shooting all of 8 years yet are cock-certain they have it all figured out and don't wanna consider the greater experience of their elder peers in the biz.

I was probably that way as well at one time. :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

fyi- There will come a day when there is no way you can even begin to see a screen that close to your face.

I was about to chime-in on that, too. I see tons of young guys(20's?) running around with LCD's literally touching their noses while shooting with an erector-setted up camera on their shoulder. I can not clearly see(critical focus) any closer than probably 10" with my contacts in, unless I'm looking through a VF with a diopter or squinting really hard. Most shooters I know that are probably mid-40's and over carry "readers" with them. I just went to the eye dr. for my annual check-up and they reduced the power on my contacts to help make it easier on me with my up-close vision, since it's more critical than my distance.

And the later in the day/more tired your eyes get, the harder it's going to be. Enjoy your youth, while you can. Now get off my lawn!

There are some rumors of a high end E-mount Sony camera. It sort of/kind of sounds like a 1D XII competitor - low rez, high fps, fast AF, aimed at pro photogs and priced at around $6,000. It "may" be announced in April. If correct, this will mean that Sony has finally decided to enter the territory currently occupied by 1D XII and D5. Canon then might be able to make a move with 1D CII or something in that vein.

From a technological point of view, Sony could have been fielding a similar camera for several years now. Likewise, Canon (or Nikon, for that matter) could have made a more videocentric camera in this price range as well.

I'm one of those guys with reading glasses on to see my Ninja Blade screen. One of the main reasons I am willing to give Zacuto $2,000.00 for a Graticle HD, I am tired of shooting with reading glasses on. They smudge, they break, they slide down your nose. Having a nice, sharp and light sealed EVF is my dream on my C100 and future C whatever I end up with.

Please don't get put off. Online discussions do veer off to a mode like my way is better than yours. There is much to learn from the experience of everybody.

Asking client to change something like posture, wardrobe etc is strictly no-no. If we are walking to a park to shoot there, then I will of course suggest the best spot. One has to be respectful to the client. There was a time I was on the other side of the fence and was being interviewed by people. If someone would have suggested me to stand with my legs apart, then I would have felt offended.

For all of you past their 40s, you need to do some eye exercise. Common thing that I do while walking in the park is quickly shift focus between a near object (green leaf/bush) and distant object (bush at 20 feet away). Also looking at 3d printed photos from a distance helps.

I'm sure I'm one of those you might think are that since I do have a baby-face and do not shoot in typical "elder" fashion. But I've been shooting professionally for 20+ years. And the ONLY way I can focus on the screen is when I am that close and looking over my glasses. It's the mid-range distance that now gives me trouble. This is typical of the near-sighted folks.

I just did the full laundry list with ALL of the stuff I normally use with the C100 since I am going to buy a new travel tripod head (didn't even include my Røde wireless receivers or sound mixers wireless for hop from mixer), and with the new Zacuto rig it comes to 13.5lbs for my little C100! i want to separate my Sachtler head from the Miller Solo DV carbon legs but I weighed my little DV6SB Sachtler head and it weighs almost 13lbs! I was going to try to carry it in my camera backpack but it's too large and heavy when I include five lenses, C100, 80D, batteries, etc. I have done the 60lb camera backpack more times than I care to remember so adding in another 12lbs for my Sachtler head, ouch. I may pick up the Manfrotto 504 HD Fluid Head, it's only six pounds. Not in the same league as my Sachtler but I won't have to carry the head (I can live with putting a $350.00 head in my luggage, but not a $2,500.00 head) and the 504HD only weighs about half of the Sachtler and it supposedly has an 11.5lb and 16.5lb counterbalance setting to handle my rig.

Since I one-man band pretty much everything and fly to my locations typically, I really consciously monitor weight. I've adopted the Sachtler ACE because it comes in at less the 9 lbs. Since I shoot mostly handheld anyways I don't need a beefy tripod and it does just fine for interviews. The only thing it struggles with is telephoto pans or tilts. I tend to hate those anyways - they're boring.

But this also brings up shoulder versus C100/300 form factor. I think there is a right and wrong way to shoot with the form factor. If you want to shoot DSLR style, you can't add much outboard gear. My C300 is stripped down, no handle, and only a single Sennheiser G3 receiver velcro'd on the jacks at the back. Nothing hanging far out from the camera body, as that greatly magnifies the effective weight. My rig weighs in at 8 1/2 lbs. In this mode, I can film handheld fine for a couple hours. But, my shooting doesn't require me to be "ON" all the time. I can sustain a single shot for about 10 minutes with my eye on the viewfinder.

And I also find when you shoulder mount a camera, all the sudden you are less able to get the best angles. When I'm filming events with a lot of camera crews, I'm often struck at how less nimble the shoulder-mount crews are. I get A LOT more shot variety than they do. While a higher percentage of their shots may be usable. I'm covering the event from more angles (figuratively). Put simply, I'm doing a better job of storytelling.

So I think a lot depends on your shooting goals. Is it to get the best imagery in short bursts? Or to cover a sustained event without breaks? For the former I find the C100/300 form factor the best. For the later, a shoulder mount. But that's where rigging comes in - with the C100/C300 you can do both.

Grrr. As much as I agree with you I really can't stomach the mark-up on Gratical. I looked at Eye a few times when they were offering a full kit unit for $1,400 and said no both times. I couldn't get past duplicating what was already in-built on the 100/II. My "Erector Set" rig is not unlike the rigs made for DSLRs and places the Canon VF at the right height and distance. For the 25% of the time I use any kind of rig, it just doesn't make sense to throw money Z'z way on this. Just my circumstances...

I might feel the same if I had the C100 MKII. But I have the MKI so the eyepiece is close to useless. It is a lot of money but it's easier to justify if I also use it occasionally on rental FS7, C300 MKII and REDs. I like the RED screen but it is of limited use, plus the tools the Graticle has are pretty cool also. I really like Zacuto gear, it's expensive but very well made and thought out. My hope is that I will buy it, use it for a few months, then the new Canon Cwhatever I buy will have a smaller, cheaper version of the C700 VF and I will sell the Graticle.

Well, I try for the third time: What do you think about a paid physical modification of C300 Mark 2 for 4K 60p or even 120p ? It sounds possible? Then we could see a C100 Mark 3 with 4K 8 bit 422 for sure.

I was remotely hoping for a "paid physical modification" for the 100/II. I would think that even C100/II users would be as pissed-off as C300/II users. All this talk of form factor has me leaning towards the thinking that style probably should fall off the range.

It's not possible within a feasible price range. The DPAF upgrade was calculated in ahead of time because the sensor was already DPAF capable.

Maybe there'll be a MKIII or something. GH-5 has 60 fps and it's a $2,000 camera but Canon has to play along with the rest of the boys and the feature set is determined in advance.

It's been stated by Canon on several occasions that 4K 60p will NOT happen for the C300 MKII, it's not supported by the hardware. No firmware will give the camera that feature. I think it will be possible for the future lower end camera (whether or not that will be called the C100 MKIII remains to be seen) because it will be a much lighter codec. Keep in mind that all 4K DCI with the C300 MKII is at 410 Mbps. Not saying that they couldn't had made it work when they designed it but with the specs they settled on, and the hardware they built, using the processors they had, it's not possible. They should have, but they didn't. That's why Sony sells a lot of FS7s.

Well, 6D MKII was registered with some global agency. So, its arrival is imminent.

Chances of it offering decent video are not high.

If it would have the same video specs as the 5D Mark IV - but be priced lower because of less photo features - it would be great. The 5D Mark IV doesn't have the cinematic specs, but the 4K video quality is very good.

And Sony registered what seems like some sort of a A7 derivation.

And Nikon might bring out D820 soon. Naturally, it'll have the best 1080p video on the market.

My prediction:
Canon C200
4k at 30fps 4:2:0 8bit internally
1080 at 120fps
HDMI output 4:2:2 10bit (4k at 30fps)
13-14 stops of DR
Less noise than the C100 mkii
For the rest, similar features than the C100mkii

So, an FS5? :)

It does make sense for them to release something to compete with the FS5 spec-wise. It doesn't matter how many claims you make about "out-of-the-box" picture, the fact is that the FS5 (and FS7) has sold plenty of units based on the spec sheet - and in that regard Canon is a long way behind.

And, with that said, I wouldn't sell my MKII for a re-heated version.
