C100: 7 Weeks to NAB - Anyone hearing anything besides conjecture about a C100 MKIII?

I feel like Andrew Reid has been trying to start a PR with Canon since the moment he named his blog site after their cameras. It has a been a bit one sided. I've never seen any indication that Canon knows his site exists.

The great British film maker likes to start PR wars with just about anyone one who doesn't agree with his new camera of the the month infatuation.

So, seven weeks is four weeks now.

Yeah, but it doesn't matter anymore. No new camera from Canon at NAB is the word. The word could be wrong but very little excitement and very few rumbles from the media machine about this NAB. Yawn.

This is the year to go to NAB and just party and drink and drink and party, because you don't have to worry about getting up and going to the show to see anything.

Most gear news begin to trickle out with about a month to go. Canon is unlikely to bring their new (C200?) model out yet but surely somebody will bring something to the market. They can't just all sit there along with the Nikon and Samsung CEO's (Samsung's CEO is in jail anyway) and just keep getting hammered on cheap hotel liquor. Can they?

Not likely. They can afford the top shelf hootch.

So in previous NABs we've had:

3D - Dead (last 2 TV manufacturers are quitting it this year)
Drones - Can get them for $5 now
4K - No-one cares *
HDR - no TVs are 100% REC2020 + no-one cares
360/VR - ? Will be deader quicker than 3D

* by "no-one" I mean "real people", that excludes video/film people and camera/TV manufacturers.

Whats next?

BTW if there was a C200 thats basically a newer C100 MKII but with the relocatable C300 style monitor / audio, ok-ish 4K and very good HD then I think that I'd sell my C300 MKII and get 2.

Plus I think it's time the hand grip was upgraded, it's feeling a bit too lightweight and plasticky against the C300 MKII and could do with a couple of extra buttons.
If this was an additional add-on that supports all the old cameras then I'd buy it.

New Canon cameras is coming but all of the rumor sites and a few in the industry indicate Fall of this year, not NAB. Also, Japanese preference or superstition avoids even numbers. That never held back Sony in the old days, I had a BVW400, then a BVWD600 but so far look at Canon, C100/300/500/700. It's fun to speculate what they might call the new camera.

Definitely not a C200.

Maybe Canon will break with its own tradition. To wit, 80D (on top of 6D/MKII).

As a side note, if one presumes that this C100MKIII/C200 camera will come out by fall, then I don't see any reasons for Canon not to preview it at the NAB, with the stipulation that the final specs are still to be determined. GH5 was officially announced at PhotoKina last September and is still not shipping to stores.

PS. As to "what's new?" - I reckon 8K and the various VR/360 cameras.

Damn. I just want to either buy a new C100 mk III, or have the price come down on the C300 mk II. Either way, I'd be happy.

I'm so there, too. Don't wanna pay AU$6000 for a 1080P camera, but AU$18,000 for a c300mk2 is way out of my league.

How about C30 as a name? Anyone said this yet? Canon have 7D, 70D and 700D for their different levels of still cameras, so why not a low level C300 called C30?

I'm gonna be looking to buy a c300 mkii in two years, that will last for the rest of my days, and I don't care about slowmo. I mean how much better can it get?

Since buying the C300 MKII my gear acquisition syndrome has dropped to nothing. (saved money by spending more!)

I can see wanting 4K HFR eventually, so a C300 MKIII in 3-4 years time would be on the cards.

I think I could keep that for the rest of my life while all the young whippersnappers go to 8K.

It'd be an interesting development if 5D MKIV and/or 1D X MKII gets a C-Log upgrade.

Rumors abound.

After getting the autofocus upgrade on the C100 MKI and a C100 MKII, I can never go back to the 5D3 again, and the DSLR form factor. Its one thing to stick the 5D3 on a tripod and use it that way, but running around Bangkok with a 5D3 would be pure torture at this point. I use the Auto Iris a lot, its just way easier than holding the grip and turning the dial, take off the top handle and use the scratch mic and I can fit the C100 in my back pack. Not to mention the ND filters ..... yep, Im totally done with DSLR's. I don't know why any serious videographer would get a 5D4 to shoot video with in this day and age, even with a C-log upgrade. For photos I use it all the time, but haven't touched the video features in over a year. I do actually love the full frame imagine of the 5D's but totally spoiled by the ergonomics of the C series. I notice the C300 MKII doesn't have an auto iris function.... bummer!
