60d vs. 7d kick in head needed...

Short and sweet:

60D is $899 (new, 1 yr warranty)
7D is $1087 (loyalty program, 90 day warranty)

The comparison between cams has been hammered enough.

Audio is a non-issue as there are many solutions.
I also like stills.

I am all set to get the 7D....

then.... the problem started... my brain started working...
would someone kick me in the head so I just buy the damn cam please?

60D is cheaper! Folding LCD! ...um...Canon lenses (wait)! Less shots/sec (um)! Less weatherproofing (yeah)! 60 is higher than 7 (why)!

You're going to be spending over 80% the cost of the 7D anyway, so you might as well get the one you want for a few bucks more just to avoid cognitive dissonance.

Folding LCD!

I actually use this all the time.

Less weatherproofing (yeah)! 60 is higher than 7 (why)!

Actually, with less weatherproofing and only one DIGIC IV chip instead of two, the 60D is the most robust of all the Canons when it comes to overheating (I would imagine the T3i is comparable though).

And regardless of everyone's 7D overheating...I've had mine overheat ONCE since they came out.

I've shot narrative, music videos (yes, outdoors in the hot sun all day), events (yes, long ones and yes, some are outdoors) and corporate...a lot since the camera came out.

Maybe I got one of the lucky ones, but not EVERY 7D has the issue (on a regular basis).

Kegan

my 7d has overheated 2wice in over a year and a half ...many times in harsh conditions (Jamaica)...so i guess i'm with Kegan. I do have it to shut down after a minute of inactivity though.

I have the T3i and 7D. I use my T3i for video mainly for 3 reason, 3x tele-crop, articulating LCD and audio-control. You get two of the 3 with the 60D plus another bonus - much longer battery life.

For still's, I mainly use my 7D due to it's 8fps since my subjects are usually birds/wildlife. The 5fps of the 60D is no slouch, and I've been using the Rebel series and my older 20D which held up just fine, and the 60D is a step-up everything else I've had except for my 1Dm2.

about the only big reason for me to choose 7D over 60D is that the 7D sends an HD signal out hdmi while recording.
and since it doesnt have an articulating screen, thats kind of important.

Really tough choice. Normally I would say the 60D in a heartbeat but $1100 is such a great deal on a 7D and it's hard to resist going with the better deal.

I would say that if video is more important to you, go with the 60D. You can't beat the articulated LCD, ability to install Magic Lantern, and the knowladge that it's not going to overheat during a shoot.

If stills are more important to you, go with the 7D as the faster FPS, better autofocus, and more professional body will all make a big difference.

I thought so too but most people I know with 7Ds who have tried HDMI out says they find it doesn't make much of a difference. Furthermore, they say you lose the LCD picture when you do this.

If you *only* care about video, 60D. If you want stills as well, 7D

i a/b tested a 60D and 7D a couple weeks ago. there was little to no difference in the quality of still images

Accepted, but that wasn't why I suggested what I did. I think that, for video only, the 60D is a better all-round package - articulated screen and Magic Lantern. I think for stills, the 7D is a better all-round package - handling, ergonomics, weather sealing, MFA.

It's an opinion, that's all

Same sensor, same quality. Buy 7D only if you photograph fast sports or you shoot on antarctic.
