Down here in Texas, nothing cuts it but an LCD magnifier - hoodman/zacuto style.
I find that under harsh sun, I need one of those AND a "black cloth" from my view camera days (black inside/white outside cloth, about 2-3' square - you toss it over your head, like those old pics of Ansel Adams).
When choosing a hood, the main factors are mounting method, cost, and does it have adjustable magnification/focus or not. (For instance, my close vision gets worse every year and I'm at the point where I'm stashing reading glasses all over the house and in my gear cases - but my non-adjustable 3x works fine for me. Other say they can't function without adjustable focus).
I am very happy with the Cavision model magnifier, as it can swing away to show client/talent a take, etc. - it mounts to a baseplate and has a swing/slide setup. I don't like the "glue a frame on the camera body" deal (Zacuto, etc), though many here are pleased with those. I've also seen the Hoodman "crane" thing that mounts to your hot shoe.. and then there are the Hoodman "rubber bands" which I'd avoid. Redrock makes a simple stamped-steel sheet to attach the hoodman as well. Searching these boards will turn up a lot of opinions/experiences with all of them - one thing most posters will agree on is some sort of magnifier/hood is a must, you'll never take it off, etc - choosing which model is all about what works for your style and budget.
Keep in mind, with many DSLRs, plugging in an external monitor kills the feed to the camera's screen. IT's not a "use both" situation like with, say, a DVX.
