GH2 60 D vs GH-2

I am sure this has been brought up before and I apologize for repeating but I could not find a good thread for this discussion on DVX. I am a recent film school grad looking to jump into the DSLR filmmaking world. I did all my research and was set on the Canon 60 D but then found the GH-2. The only reason it has me leaning away from the 60 D is its ability to record longer clips that the 60 D. Is this true? Also can the GH-2 use the juiced link DT454 and is it compatible in general with other products created for DSLR rigs?

GH2 also has been shown to have better color rendering and dynamic range than the 60D. Also, electronic viewfinder of the GH2 is EXTREMELY helpful for video.

use of EOS glass is an huge advantage for the 60d :)
but the EOS mount is a huge disadvantage for the 60d :(

Can you not adapt Canon glass for the GH2? Also, do you have any recommendations for good GH2 glass?
Yes i had a 550D/T2i the same performance as the D60,with my GH2 i have the 14-140mm-45-200mm-20mm f1.7-14mm f2.5 and olympus 9-18mm .There is nothing wrong with these lenses for their own uses, hearing about Canon glass can get tiring.
My GH2s video is miles better.

Hi collarblind - this topic has been explored on dvxuser before. Here are a few of the earlier threads:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?239606-60d-vs-pana-gh2
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...nd-Camera-(for-video)-60D-vs-GH2-Which-to-buy
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?232257-advice-needed-film-making-scenario-60D-or-GH2

If you read these threads, the bottom line seems to be that the GH2 is better for video (no moire, silent autofocus with the 14-140 lens, usable viewfinder in video mode [Canon viewfinders go black due to mirror lockup], etc).

For me, one look at the moire on the roof in the 60D version of this video is decisive: http://vimeo.com/20565849

If you're a filmmaker, I highly recommend the GH2. Hard to find, but they're in stock body-only for $899 (+ $9 for shipping) at Unique Photo - about $100 less than the $999 Canon 60D (which is also pretty hard to find -- backordered at Adorama and Unique Photo).

Yes it's true the GH2 can record longer than 12 minutes, I have done a 3hour and 5 minute singe recording with a 32GB SDHC card.

Thanks for the other thread links Bill I was having trouble finding those and after hearing Ram's response about record time it seems like GH2 is the way to go for video.

Doesn't the GH2 also have a PAL 30 minute limit in PAL countries?

Doesn't the (unhacked) GH2 have a 30 minute AVCHD recording limit in PAL countries?

I am callerblind. My telephone doesn't show a number when it rings.

The limit is in Europe, the EU specifically, from what I understand. It's due to the fact the video cameras are taxed more heavily, and "video" is defined as the capability to record more than 30 minutes. You can hack that out of a GH1 so if Vitaliy hacks the GH2 perhaps that limitation will disappear.

Are all of those lenses olympus brand? Could you link me to where I can find yours? I think after reading other threads that the GH2 would be a better fit for me.

This is a newbie statement but could you please explain what 4/3 is. Does that mean with a 4/3 adapter you can use any glass?

Totally not a newbie statement. I learned this at one point, too :)

Micro 4/3 is the name of the lens mount and sensor size of the GH1/GH2/GF1/GF2/G3 etc. cameras. 4/3 refers to the size of the sensor, but contrary to popular belief, it's not 4/3 inches. In fact, it's not 4/3 of any particular unit, that measurement has some convoluted origin in earl video tubes, or something like that. I really don't know. The "Micro" part refers to the fact that unlike many DSLRs, the micro 4/3 cameras have no mirror in the body, allowing their body to be much thinner and the mount much shallower. Since the sensor is relatively smaller than most DSLRs (but still plenty large for a shallow DOF) and the flange depth (distance the lens sticks into the camera) is very shallow, adapters exist to adapte almost any lens (that's made for a 35mm or APS-C sensor) to a micro 4/3 camera.

In summary, the GH1 and 2 can take any micro 4/3 lens and any lens that can be used with a micro 4/3 adapter. I have a micro 4/3 to canon FD adapter and a Minolta adapter. Popular choices of non-micro 4/3 lenses to adapt to these cameras are the Canon FD lenses and Nikon F mount lenses.

Make sense? If not, ask away!

Sidenote: Even though the GH1/2's sensors are smaller than many DSLR's, the GH sensors are still almost as large as a frame of 35mm motion picture film!

Thanks for the explanation. That makes perfect sense but what doesn't is why people say the GH2 isnt as good because of the lack of nice glass. Are there particular lenses that don't take a 4/3 adapter?

Most notably Canon EF lenses. Most Nikons do. People get way too fanatic about Canon's glass, there's plenty of good glass out there, people just don't look hard enough.

Lens recommendations: Panasonic 20m f1.7, Canon 50mm f1.8, Panasonic 14-140 f4-5.6

Oh ok I was planning on getting EF glass if I got the 60 D but now leaning towards GH2 its a new ball game. Thanks for the recommendations I might want a faster zoom lens but I know that would cost me a lot more.

I got an FD 80-200mm f2.8 that's pretty sharp. Get's a little softer at 2.8 but at f4 it's sharp. Tokina lens for Canon FD mount. And 80-200 on a micro 4/3 sensor (2x crop factor) is 160-400mm, so it's pretty darn long. $275 from B&H.

All the lenses mentioned i have exept the olympus 9-18mm are panasonic four third lenses and all are sharp and good for video with different f speed, the 20mm f 1.7 i great for low light, the only thing i would like is an affordable fast wide zoom four thirds lens.

ps i live in the uk where all are readily available
