Upgrade EX1 firmware to 1.11

a joke really, as in I'm not illegally mirroring a zip that Sony accidentally put on their site for a day. (on the real though, it's the exact zip that sony put up, everything you need to upgrade your EX1)

In the 2 or so months it's been publicly available on my site I haven't been contacted by Sony once though, so I'm guessing they honestly don't care.

And they should not care. If anything, this is saving them from one big pain in updating all of these EX1 cameras!

I have heard if your camera goes in for repair, sony will update the firmware, is this valid? My camera has the Vignette problem and the drain issue and I was wondering if they just put it on there or do I need to still pay the hundred bucks.

well thats a stupid deal, well I will just hold off then on the whole thing till I get close to the end of my extended warranty, I dont see the vignette anyways using the Sgpro so it really doesnt matter for now.

Cheers,

Jon

Wow.. http://www.freshdv.com/2008/10/kxs-replacing-costly-sony-sxs-media-with-cheap-sd-cards.html

So the limitation will be to specific Class-6 SDHC cards that are proven to handle the 35Mbps sustained and no hot swap. But please clarify, will then 24fps be the only framerate possible or will at least 30fps work?

This is excellent for this guy... he is gonna love me when I tell him about this.

Do we have a list somewhere, a sticky hopefully with the proven SDHCs?

USLatin,

You're very late to this party. We've been talking about this for months here on DVXUser and on DVinfo.

Any Class 6 card will work fine, and the Sandisk class 4 cards (which exceed class 6 specifications anyway) also work fine at lower cost. I use the 16GB Sandisk cards myself.

You certainly can hot swap them. However to do that, you need to remove the adapter and SDHC card as a unit. I just purchased one adapter for every SDHC card, and stopped worrying. They work exactly the same as SxS but cannot handle overcranking beyond 42fps or so.

The cards work fine at 24p, 30p, 60i, and 720/60p. It is only overcranking that causes issues.

If you want the bulletproof combination, get the Kensington Readers (which are becoming more and more scarce) and the Sandisk Ultra 2 or Ultra 3 SDHC cards. They have worked every time for everyone who's tried them.

My 16gb combo cost about $108. Versus 849.99 retail. 16gb is 58 minutes at 35mbps and 80 minutes in HDV mode which I often use for recording my conferences or talking heads.

Ohm for sure, but that's cause I am jumping form HVX-200 to Scarlet... I didn't want to have to look into a camera I shouldn't and couldn't buy. :thumbup:

Thanks for the info!

BTW, so just to be clear, they work at 35Mbps 1080-60p, just not at 24fps over or undercranked to any other framerate, right?

The camera does not shoot 1080-60p.

The KxS cards work at ALL undercrank speeds, overcrank speeds to ~42fps, and every other EX1/EX3 framerate and size.

And how about 32GB cards? These are also Class-4 which you say are even better!

Kingston $176 ---> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134716
PNY $128 ---------> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820178212

Class 4 is not better. It is cheaper. But only the Sandisk SDHC class 4 card at 16GB has proven to be fast enough. There are currently NO 32GB cards that work. We are waiting on the Sandisk 32GB cards that were due already. Looks like 2009 before they come out now.

Aha... well the 16GB's fit practically as long of a recording time as a DV tape... so he'll be flipping "just" with that.

We need a sticky with the cards listed...

If you buy a new EX1 do you get the new firmware? Or can you just update it yourself?

Yes and yes (sort of). Sony does not officially endorse user upgrades in the US. I upgraded mine easily. They request you send it in for the upgrade which costs $100.
