5D MKIII specs

My guess is rate refers to gain/ISO.

Why wouldn't it say ISO then? I've never heard ISO or gain described as rate. I'm hoping it's frame rates as well. If it's 'rate' a photo and they put a separate button there for that I'll laugh. What a waste of space.

It's probably a function that uploads the picture to facebook and allows you to set a rating of how well you like it :P (I kid of course). I'm thinking frame rate.

Yah, your probably right. Frame rate is the only thing that would make sense. What is interesting however, is if that would enable easy switching between NTSC and PAL, especially for the 29.97 function.

That would be to rate a photograph. Every single button on that side of the camera is dedicated to the reviewing of images. If there were a frame rate function button, it would be located on the top panel where ISO, WB, burst, focus functions are.

Yes, blue buttons are play back or after you have the shot related, not something to do before capture.

Then where is Jpeg capture for stills?
Also, the camera will have a headphone jack.

Most likely missing (probably a mistake).

The point remains that the reported max continuous shoot rate is 6fps, meaning no 24fps (let alone 30 or 60). It would be at least theoretically possible to get to 24fps RAW by windowing the sensor, but going off the 6fps figure, it'd need to window down to just about 1080p/2K (2278x1280 by just simple division) to get there. This would put the sensor area used at around a 16mm frame, though.

Of course, I'm more inclined to believe that the RAW listed is just for still capture.

Of course, what would be *really* cool is if the buttons could do 2 things

1) during stills mode, used to rate shots. I could see this being useful. Take a shot, hit the rate button, rotate the dial to some level of how good you thought it was. Fast, quick, and easy way to have a placeholder in your HUGE collection of stills.

2) during video mode, used to set the rate of the video mode.

Given they've really copied the 7D style on this camera, the 7D has buttons on the left of the LCD that you use to change things before you shoot, like picture style. In addition, blue doesn't always mean just after you shoot. Look at the color of the zoom buttons. They are blue, yet, you can use them before you shoot to check your focus.

Also notice the "RATE" button on the left where the Profile button is on the Mark II. Would that be to quickly change frame rate without having to go into the menu?
I thought it was to help you figure the rate you're charging...

I don't do much photography but I'm unsure how helpful the 'Rate' photo button would be? If you're taking so many pics that you need the button, then it would seem time consuming to spend time rating it on location. If not, why not just rate it in Lr or Ps where you can actually see the image clearly?

have a feeling some filmers will be underwhelmed by the MK3. There are quite some wish lists around......but Canon develops this as a still-cam first and just launched a S35 cam, the demand of which they can hardly fulfill. So I doubt RAW-422-1080p60-audiocontrol-XFcodec-C log-no overheating-unlimited filelength etc will happen in this version.

Well when I see people shooting stills, I see them check them on the back LCD after they've done a few shots. If you are shooting hundreds of shots in a day and you want to rate something higher so you can find it on the card, I could see this as very useful. Hunting for pictures has GOT to be worse than hunting through clips of video.

I don't shoot stills so I can't say. But, if I could flag a video as the best take with just hitting a button, that would be nice. We review our stunt shots on set to make sure they look right. I would flag the best, although, again, just to mark as a placeholder in the large set of files.

Gotta feeling you might be right on this one...

Yep, I agree. We will know soon enough but if they do not lead with the features we want (clean HDMI), then they are probably not there. Then the after-spin will try to convince us we don't need those features. I want to stay with Canon but if they will not offer a clean HDMI output I will have to move on as I do not want to support a company that purposefully hampers their "professional" equipment. Foolish in my opinion as people buying $3,000 cameras are probably not going to purchase a $15,000 camera. And the purchasers of $15,000 cameras will probably buy a $3,000 camera only if it has the right stuff. So they only sell a $15,000 camera and miss out on two $3,000 sales.

I will wait for the images and reviews but I have to hand it to Nikon for hitting two cameras out of the park.

over at canonrumors, someone confirmed the $3500 body only price for the 5D3
it sounds a bit stiff...
this camera better deliver some very nice images, because the D800 has nearly no downsides (for stills) and it's $3000 body only

edit:
but also...
the 5D2 was announced 17-sep-2008, with a $2700 price tag
back then (105 yen/usd), that was 285.000 yen
fast forward, and today (81 yen/usd) 285.000 yen are exactly $3500

but still, the D800 sells for $3000, and I don't see it lacking in many respects, at least wrt stills
