550D/GH13 comparision shot

1 A:7D B:gh13 C: mystery cam
2 a:gh13, b:mysterycam
3 A:gh13 B:7D C:mystery cam
4 A: gh13 B: 7D
5 A:7D B:mystery cam
mystery cam could be hmc40
couldnt tell much diff from the gh13 and 7D... but i could certainly tell the dslr from a camcorder

i guessed some as a gh13 because of the over sharpening... but if that was a 7d id be surprised.

ok i think im wrong
a is 7D
it looks iresolute with sharpness high
b is gh1
looks resolute with sharpness high

of course best looking footage is from C which is most probably hmc40

That's not really guessing now is it? Playing it safe are we? :)
Just teasing by the way. If you don't want to put yourself out there I understand.

Haha. No not at all. I'm pretty confident that the worst looking image of the bunch is NOT the GH13.

I'm also confident that this here Riot Shield was a good purchase.

It is what it is. What it is not, though, is the end all. People will still swear by the 7D and 5D, T2i and guess what!? That's okay. I think it still produces an awesome image, just at the moment it's officially representative of second generation, and the GH13 is booted right into 3rd generation IQ.

Take it as it is!

But that's not guessing at all? You seem cautious to put down actual picks so I'll assume that a couple are closer than you thought. Otherwise, why not just tell us exactly what pics are the GH13? You seem to know. Or do you? :)

I know I probably made a mistake or two but I'm fine with that.
No harm in being wrong.

I'm very happy with what I'm seeing in my cam and would happily go for a GH13 for bright wide shots if this test works out as some think.

These hacks are good for everyone.

In Comparison 3 (now on my iMac) C looks the best. Although A & B almost look slightly overexposed? 'A' looks slightly sharper than 'B' but they are both very close.

Now, if A & B are the Canon and the new hack then I'm not sure what all the fuss is about? If 'C' turns out to be the hack then I get it. :)

Comparison 4: B looks better.

Comparison 5 is really interesting as it's just down to the colour for me.
I'll call it a tie since the colour can be boosted either way in post and it's hard to tell which one is accurate although I'm betting 'A' is closer to real life.

Comparison 2 is really tough. I'm guessing it's the hack and the mystery camera. Both look great but one of them is messing with the colour.
I think I prefer 'B' over 'A' as it looks like 'A' is artificially sharper near the top. Very close though. Both look good to me.

Back to Comparison 1: 'C' looks the best. 'A' looks better than 'B'.

PS - To the guys not actually posting their guesses, come on, play along! You can't say "I knew it!" if you don't post it. :)

To sum up...

#1: C wins
#2: B wins
#3 C wins
#4 B wins
#5 Tie.

I could guess at what camera is what but that would be just that, a guess. Especially since one is a mystery.
If the GH13 ends up being the winner in all of my picks I'll be really impressed.

As far as second and third place goes, I don't see a huge difference either way except that the further away the image the better result for what I would consider second place.
Although in some cases it just looks sharper.

Thanks for doing this, Barry! Great group of photos to go by for sure.

Number 5's no tie to me. B is the better image by far. The detail's there. It is not in A. Just looks like mush.

1- C, B, A
2- B, A
3- C, B, A
4- B, A
5- B, A

That's my hierarchy. Combine this with my most previous posts for a full on opinion. ONE of these images in EVERY set is nowere near the quality of the others. It is night and day, and when you play them back it's just as obvious as the still frame. It's like comparing uprezzed SD to actual HD footage to my eyes.

If that satisfies.

Yeah, there are a few notables that I'm surprised haven't weighed in. Plenty of folks, even earlier in this thread, were willing to cast aspersions on known tests, but seem reluctant to post their observations on a blind test. C'mon guys, man up.

Also, seems like folks are settling into the idea that each camera is represented by one letter. Remember that I said that that isn't necessarily the case -- it may very well be that "A" in one comparison, is "C" in another. Of course, that may not be true either. The idea is to get you to avoid getting caught in a guessing game and instead just report on each image as its own entity.

I'm trying to get folks to tell us what they like, rather than trying to guess which one is their chosen camera. Step out of the mindframe of "mine is the best" and instead say "that one is the best, regardless of which one I own."

Now those are picks! I'm assuming you picked best to worst. :)

Thanks for posting them.

Agreed. I'm no expert and more than happy to weigh in.
I don't care if I'm wrong. I know this, if the GH13 and the 7D are a couple of the comparisons that I considered close in the not so distant shots then I'll be surprised.

Indeed. Best to worst.

My thing is I don't see any real detail in A. The trees look like mush and the grass looks like slop. That's not even pixel-peeping, just glancing at it, it looks it just cannot resolve real detail.

They aren't close at all to me, not by a long shot.

In the three way comparison, each one is like a step up: SD, HD, 4k. Major leaps in resolved detail, nothing subtle about it.

I just looked at them 'as is' and there were one or two that were close to these eyes. Not in the three way comparison though. That one was sweet.

Like I said, I probably made a few mistakes. I'm cool with that. In the one set that I thought was close to a tie I didn't see much difference between them at all except for the colour.

You didn't see the difference in the grass detail? Or the feathers of those ducks?

Or the wire that's strung between the two concrete posts?

I just looked again. I see it as being slightly sharper, as I think I said. But not much more detail at all, no.

Sharper doesn't necessarily mean better detail in my eyes. I bet if I take the one you consider mush/slop and artificially sharpen it then it would look much like the other one.

MAH

Anything middle to further back does start to look worse in image A though, comparison 5.
I'll give you that for sure.

Still, I cant help but think it's the sharpness close in. B does look sharper which in my opinion can be mistaken for more detail. Maybe my eyes are shot! :)

MAH

Yeaaah we're gonna have to agree to disagree on that one. Maybe we're looking at two different images due to graphics cards, etc, but what I see is pure detail in the grass beneath those ducks in B. Blades of grass.

A? It looks like I need glasses. Or maybe astroturf.

Anyway, when the results hit we'll all be better off!

Again, all cameras were set at their "middle" sharpness settings. That doesn't mean they had equivalent amounts of sharpness applied! It just means that it was middle-level on their individual scales.

In my evaluation, one of the cameras was delivering a substantially higher amount of in-camera sharpening than another one was, that's for sure.

You can, of course, experiment with those pics, take the lesser-edge-enhanced one into photoshop and "sharpen" it, and see how it compares to the others...

I got my GH1 2 days ago, did not expect it to really compare to the 7D/5D or t2i. I was really wrong. The Canon 1080p video mode is closer to the GH1's 720p mode, which was quite shocking. Here's a quick still from a comparison I was doing of the two cameras.
