FS7: 5 reasons the URSA Mini is better than the Sony FS7

P.S. I see some Scarlet-Ws are in stock in the states if you're looking to get one quicker.

Thanks, I'm all tied up with another order now I can't really extricate myself from a part of as I've received parts of it.

Annoying there is only one dealer in the UK outside Red themselves :(

Saw John Brawley's images from the new Ursa Mini Pro.
Same magenta corners problems that always existed.
JB insists he never notices in his work, which may be fine for his content, but honestly anyone shooting neutral subject matter is going to see it.
I hate how so many folks insist that a ton of workarounds is normal for such a low price camera. Bullshit. I think it's reasonable to expect a camera with a clean sensor at $6K.
I still don't understand how BM can continue to release new cameras without dealing with such a basic issue.

The other issue I have found is that for some reason their RAW/Color science is a bit thin. I consistently see compimentary color cross overs from them compared to RAW from other manufactuer's.
Other folks have spoken of continuing FPN issues, but that is something which is too early to know from the new camera.

So for the moment it's a non starter for me.

I would really like to see what is in the pipeline from NAB before making any other decisions.

By the way, Dennis (Starcentral) did you decide to sell your F55 ? What are you looking at now ?

Long story short BM make great learner cameras but they are not ready for primetime, except possibly as crashcams. And there's a middle ground between those two spheres where some people are willing to put up with or work around their quirks in order to use one to pay their bills. For me, life is too short.

Agreed.

Agreed. There is something very odd going on with the color science. I've been playing with some UM4.6k in Nuke and so far I'm seeing a magenta/ red/ cyan bias to the footage. The look reminds me of the Transformers movies, especially the skin tones.

Some of it can be graded away, but there is a bias and depending on the subject matter this could be a problem. I'm going to try it in Resolve, which should yield the best results. But based on what I am seeing so far I would pass on a purchase for myself.

Also for an owner operator it's unwise to have an unknown camera. I was eyeing the Varicam LT which is pretty clearly the best camera sub Arri but all clients know the c300 and the fs7 and know what to expect.

Don't expect a smooth ride with the S-W...

The FS7 is a mature camera these days and I can't see anything beating it in the foreseeable future at its price point. And it's reliable and well known. Nobody sneezes at the FS7.

I can shoot on the fs7 for the next years I don't see anything coming my way that I can't handle with it the IQ at the end of the pipeline is totally dependent on the competence of the different links in the chain if production and post production are in sync you can achieve incredibly good results.

And how about the five reasons the Canon 200 is better than the Sony FS7 ?

1 fits all my ancient lenses
2 skin tones, don't forget the skin tones
3 no Sony look
4 yes 4 XLR inputs (oh no, just two. But!... 4 Connectors, 1 x Remote 1 x Ethernet 1 x USB 1 x Video)
5 fill in your own reasons

Say wha?

1 fits all my ancient lenses
- Flange distance smaller on the FS7 - Anything that can go on the C200 can go on the FS7, not true the other way around.

2 skin tones, don't forget the skin tones
... Nope...
sonycolours.jpg

3 no Sony look
... Nope...again... see above -> thats ungraded, screenshot straight out of the FS7

4 yes 4 XLR inputs
C200 has two?

I shouldn't have gone for the bait.... damn! hahaha

Chappelldigital,

Would you mind sharing your in-camera settings for the look you posted above? I keep getting asked to shoot images for clients lately who don't want to spend time grading. I'd love to use this look for them. Thanks!
