5 minutes with Oden - Documentary short

I've gone through it not too long ago, so of course it was bringing back incredibly painful memories. I'll never understand people who are so flippant when you tell them you had to put your dog down. It's just as bad as a person dying, and in some cases, yes, it's worse.

That said, I liked the editing a lot. I liked how you cut in shots of the dog's expressions while he was on the phone and I liked the use of him on the bike over and over, plowing through the rain. It created a really really great rhythm and it reflected well off of his voiceover. The shot of the empty leash and collar towards the end was also pretty poignant. I probably wouldn't have used so much music, but it works in the context of a 5 minute short like this, so it didn't bother me. I'm surprised you were able to shoot inside the vet's room as they were putting the dog down, and I'm glad you didn't pull any punches. We see the shot and we it's lifeless body. It's really a tough thing to face and I have no clue how you shot that coherently without dropping the camera and bawling.

Anyway, really nice, and educational too. People who don't own pets should be tied down and forced to watch this film. And this is how you do documentaries- you get the tough stuff and put it in peoples' faces.

'Wow' is the word.

I'm grateful that someone posted a link to this on another thread.

If this is you not knowing what the heck you're doing, I don't think I can guess at what you'll do when you *do* know what you're doing.

I just watched this and I admit I have tears. That was very moving. I think more so for me because I experienced the exact same thing with my dog a couple of years ago. I had her for over 14 years and was one of the toughest things I had to do. Bravo for showing just how powerful this thing is. I wished I could have done something like this for mine but I wasn't able to do it myself. I would have had to of had somebody do it for me like this. Great job.

FWIW I have never had a dog and I found it very moving too.

Although it took me back to the day I had to put down my favorite cat.

On the subject of dogs...

There was one species on Earth that lived in very close symbiosis with Man. This was a variety of domesticated canines called 'dogs.' The dogs had learned to achieve a rough simulation of 'guilt' and 'remorse' and 'worry' and other human characteristics. The humans had learned how to achieve simulations of 'loyalty' and 'dignity' and 'cheerfulness' and other canine characteristics.

The humans claimed that they loved the dogs as much as the dogs loved them. Still, the humans kept the best food for themselves. The dogs noticed this, you can be sure, but they loved the humans so much that they forgave them.

- Robert Anton Wilson, 'The Universe Next Door'

this was just amazing. in tears just like everyone else...and like sadmax have never had a dog but i;ve had cats...and i had to put mine down also. Not something one would wish on anyone else.

Very.good. job.

I have to say, I'm a little bit worried. There are equipment related threads on this forum that balloon to 10, 20 pages in a matter of a day or two, which present nothing but speculation, rumors, etc. And here we have this gem of film making which deserves to be seen by every member of this forum, yet it's been here for two weeks and got 50 comments.

I don't know about you, but this short movie got me more emotional than any new HD DSLR ever could.

This film could have been shot on a cell phone...yes, the image is beautiful...but it's the story that MAKES it. Excellent filmmaking.

bump. brilliant comment Voytech.

Thanks for the bump, skinny!, otherwise I would have missed this.

What can I say? Really, really nice film.

I watched several of your other films on your site. Extremely touching. Great redemption stories.

Thanks for all the great comments guys. I agree, this story could have been shot by pretty much anyone with any camera and I think the effect would have been the same.
