4K will require hardware update

Actually 4k raw (i.e. 8 bits per pixel, before de-mosaicing) 30 FPS does fit in 3G-SDI (3Gb/s), particularly if compressed (and then maybe 60 FPS too).

What Sony communicated over a year ago was that the hardware was already there, and just needed a firmware upgrade. Eg:

Still, best bet is the Odyssey or AJA at this point to take the 3G-SDI feed directly. This way you avoid spending any money on a HXR and AXS combo. $7000 for just those two are a waste of money, not to mention its proprietary so who are you going to sell it to in 2-5 years?
 
Thanks for the link Dennis - I have to do more reading as I thought 12 bit raw was by nature 444.

I agree, for the time being the Oddysey seems to be the best solution for an FS700. Not only is not proprietary but it also has added genuine functionality as a seemingly excellent monitor and a 4 x 2 recorder not to mention the CODEC rental options

The only downside to the Odyssey if you want to shoot 4K is unlike the Sony Solution it doesn't offer 60fps. If you want to do faster pans the 60fps would have helped diminish the rolling shutter effect, but if you don't require any quick pans or don't need to capture any fast moving objects than 30fps should be fine for many applications.
 
Yeah you will enjoy the explanation. I use to think RAW was more data than ycbrc signals but its actually quite the opposite.

True about the 60fps, I never thought of that. We can never seem to win...

That's a good catch, it does state firmware quite clearly.

I think either there's a mistake made by Juan or they hit a problem with the current hardware. Because no one's going to stick a 4K sensor (which they made a big deal about ) and then have to re-engineer the camera to enable it.

Or maybe it's to prevent the firmware being hacked and opened up?

The Odyssey will be driven by firmware updates and also software enabling temporary licenses to codecs that it will eventually support.

The BIG drawback to the Odyssey right now is the fact it will only include the AVID codec in MXF wrapper, and are not planning to support MOV wrapper. I asked them about it here on DVX and they said they were not keen or eager to worry about MOV.

Not True!!! as the sony Also offers slow motion in 4k.... 120 fps for 4sec!!!! and its crazy cool!

The Odyssey does not record 60fps @ 4K

Sony External Record Solution does record 60fps @ 4K

Of course the Sony also records up to 4 seconds of 120fps at 4K but I never disputed or even discussed that point.

Yeah, for sure. I guess it's what you said, they hit a snag -- could be anything from changing a capacitor to changing the sensor.

maybe its my english, but u wrote : The only downside to the Odyssey if you want to shoot 4K is unlike the Sony Solution it doesn't offer 60fps....... to me "The only downside" - is a key word, - and i just underlined that its not the only one.... slow motion is a big thing as well, especially when the major sale point of fs700 is a slow motion...

right, no misspoken here - he clearly repeat that it will require both and the software and hardware upgrade - seems like it its going to be more complicated for sony then what they expected at the 1st place! hopefully its going to be an improvement.
 
Juan said that they're trying to offer the upgrade for free. I'll tell you, if I can upgrade my camera to RAW, slog or 10-bit for under $250, I'll be a happy camper...no complaints!
 
10-bit? what are you talking?

By the way the 4k RAW file format is 16-bit, but the spec on the SDI out is 12-bit. Why don't they mention that?
