Man if that's still $2k for the "upgrade" then $2k for HXR and $5k for R5 sorry but this solution is DOA. Just make the extra investment and get the F5. Sony USA has crazy 0% financing options (not sure they are still available) but this frankenrin FS700 is not worth it in my opinion.

No, it would be still viable once Sony starts shipping new FS700s that will be sold with 4K upgrade already installed on them.

Same thing happened to F3. The newer cameras were sold with SLog firmware already installed
 
The F3 was quite different, as it was only ever firmware involved not hardware.

The FS700 is going to require the hardware/firmware upgrade as mentioned in the video. Is there an actual price on that yet from Sony?

So $7500 for camera, maybe $2000 for hardware/firmware upgrade, + $2000 for HXR + $5000 for AXS-R5 = $16,500.

I dunno, seems steep.

What I said was that people who have not yet bought FS700, will find that Sony is selling new FS700 models that are already upgraded to 4K from the factories. These cameras would still be significantly cheaper than F5. So there would still be a big enough price gap between them. F5 would still be a better camera obviously, but FS700 would be a cheaper option then.

No! .. I can think about that $500 difference in price in B&H ... so camera WITH upated hardware/firmware will go back to previous price: $8000 for body and $8600 with Kit lens

and then you have two options for 4K RAW: Sony and Odyssey, ...depends of size of your pocket $$$ :)

I don't think so. The prices of cameras drop, not go up.

Did you see brand new F65 sold on ebay for $39,000. That included the Camera Body w/Rotary Shutter, SR-R4 Recorder, SRMemory 256gb (S55/Black) Card, Viewfinder

Whoever bought it got a better deal than F55 (or at least pretty close to F55)

The prices will drop for F5, and that will force price drops on FS700
 
Very interesting. Of course one could argue they're in a bit of a sticky situation because it certainly was marketed as a firmware update way back when. I am sure there was no mention of a paid hardware upgrade at any time and people may have purchased the camera accordingly.

I don't mind, depending on price. Obviously they had planned on one route and discovered problems then realised the only way out of it was some hardware changes. Having said that i still wonder why the interface unit is a piece of ergonomic trash - especially if it was designed *for* the 700. The argument for a screen on the interface unit is moot - if there's new firmware and hardware then why can't the normal menu system of the 700 control the recorder? Why does it have to be so big? What on earth is inside there???

This is total dependant on price then...

This totally sucks. I actually bought my FS700 for what it was then, not for what it "might" be one day. So I shouldn't care if an external recorder costs a million bucks. But now I feel like I've been sold a camera under false pretenses, which makes me furious. I have a mind to force Sony to give me a full refund, so I can go and buy the BlackMagic 4k cam.

Except knowing BlackMagic, I would spend the rest of my life bouncing from one waiting list to another.... heigh ho.... :undecided

Funnily enough the 4K update was one of the reasons i settled on a 700. I feel the 1080p output could be better from it and so the 4K downsampled properly would be a big deal for me. I still have my 100 which i find to be a smoother image but obviously not without it's problems. On balance the 700 is a better image but unlocking the full potential of that sensor is a key reason for keeping it and not jumping over to an F3, F4 or some other camera system.

So it does matter to me how much that costs. I find the sony route a bit over the top, the Oddessy is much more in line with what i expected. However uncompressed 4k seems a bit silly at this level.

Sorry, I wasn't clear... I meant I didn't buy the camera because of 4k. But now it's here, I'm interested, and of course cost is a big issue -- and a HUGE unknown right now, as far as I can see. And yes, Sony's 4k interface/recorder/battery package is a joke! Odyssey is clearly the front-runner at the moment, but at what cost?

But what has me TOTALLY hacked off is that to get the clearly-advertised "firmware update", I need to send the camera off to some service center somewhere, at who knows what kind of cost, be without it for some number of weeks, and then get it back, quite likely damaged. I'm sure Sony will say "undamaged", but my experience with this kind of thing -- and Sony in particular -- has been very bad.

Oddessy has given some hints that they will have some other codec options that they can't name right now. I suspect it would be ProRes 4K as option.
 
maybe it is as simple as that and the guy just missed spoke about the hardware update!? there were already 2-3 clips from nab with sony reps and no one told about it, till that clip

Well Juan is the Product Manager, i doubt he'd make mistakes.

If CD can implement a 12 bit 444 4K codec then i'm very interested, i'd prefer RAW but would take that quite happily, bearing in mind the cost differences. In fact i'd take OpenEXR Piz compression very happily :)

If I read the video right, he was talking about the 240FPS sustained right before that, so *maybe* he means you need the hardware upgrade for that specific feature? But that seems unlikely.

In any case, Juan is not doing his job. We've seen pictures of the FS700 4k rig months ago, and now at NAB we have these we dribbles of information coming out, mainly from partners, about what it might or might not do, and this comment almost in passing about needing to send the camera back to Sony. But in all this time -- a year since they told us it would do 4k -- we have yet to see a clear, simple statement of what it will do and what it will take to make it happen. That's the product manager's job, and it's time he did it instead of feeding us these little confusing snippets and making us guess about what they mean.
 
It would seem to make sense to me that the 700 would need a hardware upgrade to get 4K raw output. Any 4K Raw output that I have seen has required 2 SDI outputs. If I were to guess, I think the hardware upgrade on the FS700 would be in converting the current SDI out to the newer 6G-SDI as featured on the the BMPC.

Still, I think the Odyssey provides a reasonable recording option. It's too bad you cant get 60p 4k out of the Odyssey but the 700 really becomes a very viable 2k camera with the Odyssey. Continuos 4K recording at 240fps is pretty awesome....wholly unnecessary and gratuitous but still awesome nontheless :)
 
Just heard that the Blackmagic video recorder...has 4k built in...but has to be turns on with a upgrade.....would love that...since I just bought one
