4K Samsung NX 1 now available for pre-order

Video, Nikon D750 compared to NX1

NX1 was recorded at 4K and downscaled to 1080P

“Here's how flat I can dial the NX1 using the custom picture profile. Pretty flat!”

“Plenty of info in the blacks there and not too noisy at ISO 1600 if you have a decent exposure like the one shown. If you don't then it does get very crushed and noisy down there.”

“-35 contrast in the converter app (Wondershare) and "Retro" profile on -8 contrast are providing some interesting results in low light at ISO 1600 and 3200. Really moves the blacks away from the danger zone, but doesn't hurt highlights.”

“If you want a flatter grade then the settings I just posted above plus Film Convert BMCC 2.5K Film gamma as Source Camera and Fj Velvia 100 as the film stock looks lovely! Clean ISO 3200!! Nice silky blacks!”

Kind of a still that isn't a still ...

Whenever GH4 comes out with its Log, these two cameras will be very close on image quality and price but Panasonic will lead on work flow. I still think that Samsung should have enabled a higher-than-4-K recording because it would given it a leg up on its competitors in terms of reframing and downscaling. It seems to be beating GH4 on auto-focus though.

The worst thing is that other companies will have to deliver value closer to NX1 and to the two current sales leaders GH4 and A7s. Samsung isn't likely to be content with merely being a value leader, however, as they want to move a lot of boxes as well.

PS. Galaxy S5 is tanking globally and Samsung is really taking it on the chin from their mobile market foes. They need some positive news soon.

it also looks a little better in low light. And the reason i may trade in my Gh4 for the nx1 is because i want shallow depth of field and a good camera for photography as well.

Speaking of a low light test --

Also, several members of Canon Rumors compared the Raw files that were generated by Imaging Resource (?) and found the camera better in low light than 7D MKII but slightly worse than 5D MK III. Overall, a very good low light performance for an APC sized sensor.

Speed booster? What's wrong about the GH4 as a still camera?
Well, not speaking on anyone's behalf, but NX-1 does have 28 MPX vs. 16 on GH-4.

BTW, as I recall, GH4 resolves to about 1500 lines in "4K". We'll see what NX-1 can do. There are some early reviews of its video capabilities but I'd found no numerical data so far.

Thanks again for the info and the links DLD...:-)

In that low light test it looks to me like it is in the same levels with my 70D at HD, but has the advantage of course with 4k and that is very good! I wonder how good is its AF in video, comparing to the amazing AF of the 70D...

I don't use auto focus for video but apparently the auto focus on the NX1 is amazing. There are a couple videos posted here that show it in action, I just don't remember which one specifically. The GH4 auto focus randomly hunts and pecks even when stationary and focusing on an interview subject with little movement

I would love to see Samsung make a more video specific model, sort of like what Sony did with the A7 series. At 28 megapixels the existing NX1 could be their hi-res photo centered camera.

The NX1S..... :) could be a 20 megapixel back lit sensor offering a significant improvement in lowlight (fewer and therefore bigger photosites on the same sized sensor). At 20 Megapixels it would still make an excellent stills camera. 4K up to 60p, 1080 up to 240fps. It would be ideal if they could change the flange distance so that Metabones could build a speedbooster for this camera but I am not sure if that would screw up their existing lens range. Last but not least, a global shutter sensor and 10bit internal recording.

There, that's not too much to ask for $1500 buck is it? :)

They have a 20 MPX sensor on NX300 but, as I learn on these forums, they can probably do a bit of both by varying the Bayer mask behind the sensor or combining the data differently coming off the sensor itself.

IMO, the electronics inside NX1 are begging for a $3,500 camcorder with all the needed in/out connections, 5.5K-6.4K with the full sensor readout and recording at higher bit rates onto a Samsung SSD. Make it the size of JVC's new LS-300 and they should be able to satisfy both the video and the stills community.

Anyway, back to the clip links -

Auto Focus One (it's a bird, it's a plane ... it has both!)

this is actually more interesting, as the jumbo jet above was covering the center of the frame, while the toe here does not ... and with the toe, you'd probably need some focus peaking on a prime ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ad0Qy5oWr6Y

here it is on a 16-50mm zoom ... definitely takes the center stage on automatic ... but I am not sure what else one should expect ...

lots of video reviews starting to come out. The reason I would sell my GH4 for this is shallow depth of field and for photography. So does anyone have photography sites with NX1 sites or can anyone do some talking head tests to see how the depth of field looks in a controlled environment?

saw the NX1 at a local PC show in Singapore. The AF is very fast and responsive. Did a very quick Panning shot and also aiming the camera at a few guys wearing stripes and checker shirts.
Check out the clips here. Straight out of camera with no correction or grading. http://we.tl/GA9sIPCSrN

Michael Reichmann did a brief ptoho review at Luminous Landscape but that was a week of major snow storms in Canada and most of his photos are of snow covered barns.

But he was definitely impressed with NX1.

The DOF is a known quantity, it will be the same as any other APS-C camera. If you are speaking of the out of focus areas or Bokeh then that is a function of whatever lens you are using. Given the small amount of lenses that are associated with this camera, it is almost like a point and shoot. The video review on DPReview showed the lenses to be well liked by the reviewers.

And to continue posting in reverse ... these are taken in a botanical garden and everything looks gorgeous straight out of the camera (+ conversion)

I am posting the second link first. Neither Jordan not Chris was too happy with the AF ...here it is done with peaking and without it ... I would have liked seeing the drone flying into the firame as well ...

First "major" video/stills review by the Camera Store guys. Jordan does the video. (would 24p have looked differently?)
