4k bmpcc

Cool idea Thomas.
I think Anton Bauer had the under cam Ellipse(?) line of batteries.
In terms of a company that specializes in power AND storage, nothing comes quickly to mind.

I'm looking forward to seeing the image from it, but really. It's 2018. Do we really have to have a ton of workarounds and Frankenrigs in a 4K camera? We have so many great options at incredible price points already. Even the URSA Mini Pro is dirt cheap and it's a really nice camera at a very low price.

If a hybrid is your thing, again, a ton of options. I think the Pocket 4K is about 2 years too late in a lot of ways. Yes, this sensor didn't exist then, but other sensors have. I have a GH5 and tested out the GH5s. Very capable, easy as hell to use cameras that look really good and 10 bit! I'm done with the rig mess. I'm good with a form fitting cage on a mirroless camera with a few pieces of kit for video but I have a limit on how far i'll go.

The battery life is going to be an issue. The screen is nice but no EVF means it could be hard to use outside. Not sure if the image is worth the hassle. We shall see. Hope to see some real sample footage in the coming months.

It seems the battery life is going to be as bad as the original with such a large screen and the power needed for ProRes processing. This is disappointing if it only lasts for 15 min.

How do you get to 15mins ?

60 mins would be optimal, but I’m sure at least 30-45 would be normal (depending on cooling)

IIRC, the original pocket was rated at 40 minutes, and I usually got around 20 minutes of recorded footage plus 40 minutes of standby time out of each battery. If this one is rated at one hour, I expect 30 minutes of footage plus 60 of standby time. Not ideal, but not horribly bad either. My RX100IV is not much better than that and it's been my main camera for the last 2.5 years.

I would really like manufacturers of electronic devices to be mandated to specify 'minimum' battery life in addition to more typical times.

Just like laptops that have 8-10h of battery life, only get 1h22m when the discrete gfx card kicks in, camera manufacturers could state "typically 60 min, minimum 22 min".

Let's see what the Pocket gets, but looking at the specs and that monitor and considering the battery.... I'm not holding my breath. But the way the battery gets inserted like on a DSLR, I'm thinking someone will make a battery grip? It would be a crime if that doesn't happen...

The old silver bmc - I loved the onboard battery - it meant you could hot swap your v lock or had a couple of mins runtime if you took the camera off its rig to do a shot from a tight angle.

Here I would treat it the same

Can't wait to see all the ridiculous rigs for this camera. V-Lock Battery on a cheese plate mounted to rails with a baseplate blocking the 5" screen. Relocated 7" monitor with arm and EVF on articulating EVF mount. LOL! Fun times. Oh! and a breakout box for audio inputs with 4-fullsize XLR's with phantom powered by D-Tap of course.

At least it is warranted if the image lives up to the specs. I mean we used to rig 8 bit 720p moire/alias cameras with 24 mbit codec while here with have 4k prores/12 bit raw that you can hand hold in one hand. If someone can show me another camera with such specs at small as that and at this price, I am all ear. In fact, I see it rigged only with a 5 inch lcd loupe like we use to with dslr and a pistol grip at the base. This would be a super run and gun setup with some batteries that you can swap every 30 min/1 hour. For longer shoot, if I am not mistaken nobody shoots handheld for hours continuously, you will have to be on some stick, and having just some power bank and a cage/rig is no fuss, in those situation.

You said it man, I feel it's 2008 again....so stupid BMD had a great opportunity to come up on top with this cam and they got the image right- the hardest part...
The funny thing is that they already have all good quality components- an articulate screen from UM, the VF from UM, the side handle from the UM, just pick the right ones for video camera for crying out loud!!

That was a rare incident with the 2.5K which has a built-in battery...I remember that video and have never seen anyone else say their BM camera overheated or "exploded".

If you put a handle under it like an old 8mm camera, then you could put a battery in the handle to give you a longer run time.

Oh for cryin' out loud...it's $1,295!!!
You don't get this wish list on any camera costing three times as much!
They already have all that - it's called the URSA Mini Pro.

Let's say they added all this wish list stuff BACK into this camera - just how BIG do you think it would be then? And how much would it cost then?

Well I'm glad we have so many manufacturing experts here with instant cost analysis break down here ;-). They had to design new camera body from scratch- do you think that was free? Do you think setting up manufacturing these new components is free? I'm actually in a unique position to assess manufacturing costs since I have actually overseen design and manufacturing of several products over last 20 years.
So yes- it would be more expensive- no doubt about it. Probably half of compatibly equipped UMP. Big? If you made the components removable it wouldn't have to be. Strip it for under 2 lbs payload for gimbal or drone- including the lens
But it would be a VIDEO camera that coud be used as such. With this image quality it would have no competition if the ergonomics were correct. I bet the engineering team had an epiphany at some point upon completing the design- "We were supposed to make a video camera? -oops....?"

They made a design/marketing decision that a big stationary screen was better than a smaller articulating one...even though onboard power is at a premium. Articulating screens have been on cheap camcorders going back decades, it's hard to imagine the costs are prohibitive.
"Oh for cryin' out loud", could have done that and priced at $1,500.

Actually its a $999 camera. If you want a flip out screen theres a much lauded camera that has one for $2000. 'Oh for crying out loud' is apt for the amazing amount of whinning going on about what the camera should have.
