It's gonna have to out do the forthcoming cinema module for the RED hydrogen to get me interested. Will definitely check out the specs though. The BMPCC has probably been one of their most successful products. A few years ago, they did a 1/2 price sale and I thought it was already a "has been" camera, but then the price returned to normal and never changed ever after. $1000 forever. I can only imagine they were still selling volume of those to justify the price sitting there for so long, but who knows...

IMO, to compare these two, we'll actually have to see what the Hydrogen does without any additional modules, which may potentially cost thousands of more dollars.

If the phone @$1300/$1600 produces amazing quality without anything else then we have ourselves a chess match. If it's like other RED cameras and you're going to need to buy something extra to even just turn the thing on, it's not going to compete...at least not for the kind of people who are interested in the pocket (for the most part).

I actually haven't kept up with the specs of the Hydrogen so if they are out and the product is more of a standalone device then that's awesome!

You must know more than me- what are the specs for the forthcoming cinema module for Red Hydrogen?

So I'm thinking maybe the sensor/lens mount bit is detachable, like a micro with a pocket attachment wifi controller/monitor.

Or maybe I just watched too much Thunderbirds. :undecided

Yeah it looks chunkier than a pocket, which supports my theory that it's a two in one. That's how I'd design it.

BM supposedly stated a year ago (or maybe two, IDR) that they couldn't make a 4K Pocket at that time because of the heat, and that they wouldn't be releasing any HD cameras moving forward...so if it's a little bigger, I'm cool with that.

IMO, the "Pocket" naming is just a continuation of the branding for a product that tremendously helped with their camera success...it probably won't fit in your pocket since the first one barely did (maybe only with a pancake, ha).

It's gonna have to out do the forthcoming cinema module for the RED hydrogen to get me interested. No doubt they aren't playing in the same product column. I already have a hydrogen on order, so the cinema module is more what I'm tracking towards and will be comparing new entrants to for myself.

And that's just for 2D. Hydrogen is a thing to itself just with the base phone and holographic capture/display.

No one really knows. Here is what Jim Jannard said about it though:

The cinema module (so crazy good it is scary) will not ship at the same time the phone is released. It is the single most difficult trick we have ever done... even more tricky than the phone. It (cinema module) will shoot R3D's when released. Only thing better are its big brothers and sister Scarlet.

I love what Blackmagic does. It's been kind of quiet from them for a couple of years so it's nice to see them back with announcements. Hopefully announced products are in stock by summer and not a year later. ;) If the BMPCC 4K is a crazy good camera, I may rethink the hydrogen path, but we'll see. Hydrogen seems like a rather compelling addition to the whole media innovation realm, which makes me think that going with the cinema module there will be what I do, but as always, it will be interesting to get full specs on both eventually to compare.

It's one 'cinema module'? Not more?

I had a preorder in the fall but ended up canceling it. My concern then was for the prices of any possible modules; how much for a lens mount, will it need a media bay, do you have to pay to unlock features (i.e. REDCODE RAW), etc.

There is some speculation that this new BMPCC might be modular in some way but even if it is, the main differentiator between these two companies for most people will always be the price.

But yea...at the end of the day if the BMPCC 4K and the Hydrogen both ran at $5K with all of the bells and whistles it's a different conversation.

Yeah, only speaking about myself. My perspective. I ordered a hydrogen because it is a hydrogen. Not because there are modules.

That being the case, I'll be comparing new cameras against options for the hydrogen.

Anyone else starting from square one probably won't be comparing them.

I just want the new Pocket camera to not have the horrible aliasing and moire of the HD Pocket camera. In this day and age I no longer will accept a camera with that level of aliasing and moire no matter how good it looks on paper. An artifact is an artifact and I consider that unacceptable.

Maybe should called it ccc "Chunkier cinema camera" instead of pcc "Pocket cinema camera"

:D :D j/k

+1 totally agree.
But the other bugaboo - rolling shutter.
First one to the post to get rid of that on a DSLR/Mirrorless is going to get my vote.
